Andy freaking Serkis in the building! Imagine Gollum is your floor boss in prison

Eric H

Thank you at the end for engaging in the political conversation at the end about the for-profit prison system and all the other stuff. As fun and as masterful as this show is, at the end of the day this is a deeply political show, and for creators not to engage with it on that level just does the show a disservice. This show is masterful in depicting real life political struggles. So while this is just one man's opinion, I hope you don't censor yourself while watching this show, because it is very real and the topics are worth talking about and exploring. This is not the show for escapism.

So a bit of background on Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker's character who Luthen meets up with), he's a character who appears in a lot of different Star Wars series and his thing is that he's kind of the proto-Rebel. He was a resistance fighter during the Clone Wars, which was before the Empire was a thing and the Republic was engaged in civil war against a group called the Separatists who had taken control of his homeworld. When the Republic became the Empire, he and his Partisans were some of the first people fighting against them. The scene with him and Luthen is lowkey one of my favourites, because he has a good reason to not want to work with other rebel groups over ideological differences, and I think that we see the reasons for that especially in the second season and other Star Wars series and films.

The prisoner "floor boss" you saw in this episode that gives orders to Andor and the rest of the shift is Andy Serkis, the Actor doing most of ALL the big motion captures in Hollywood practically since it was invented! in Movies you girls saw, he was Cesar in the Planet of the Apes trigoly and Gollum in Lord of the Rings. He also played Kong in King Kong, A bad dude in Avengers Ultron, Alfred in the Recent Batman, and shit ton of other roles. Big big actor, and a great one too!

Not just for-profit prisons, but the way empires (including ours--the US) isolate and scapegoat the "prisoner class" in general. Then, when they create a pipeline for moving working-class people into that "prisoner class," there's no opportunity for redress for anybody. They are essentially conscripting an army of permanent slaves through legal sleight-of-hand. That's the really scary pipeline. Create BS anti-working-class laws that law enforcement can use to target anybody for being "suspicious"--vagrancy, loitering, things like that. Get as many people funneled into the prison system as possible and institute prison labor policies. Then, jack up your sentencing structure so you can extract as much labor from them as possible. Meanwhile, scaremonger about crime, homeless people, and ethnic minorities (who are so-often portrayed as being "prone to criminality") so that when you do all that, nobody cares. The state I live in, California, does not have for-profit prisons. However, we still use prison labor for all sorts of things, including producing goods and services for state programs. So you don't even need that profit motive to be involved.

It may be too late already but FYI the season one finale has a end credits scene. Just so you’re aware.

'It would be you wouldn't it..' Your discussion at the end made me think of this line about Andor in season 2. It's just so good.

Andor brings in a lot of elements from other Star Wars media and doesn't really draw attention to it. So here's a tiny bit of non-spoilery context Before the Empire (15-20ish years before the current time) there was the Republic. The last war the Republic fought, and the inciting event that turned the Republic into the Empire, was a civil war against a breakaway group called the Separatist Alliance. The guy Luthen was trying to get Saw to help was a Separatist. During that same war, Saw led a guerilla effort on his home planet of Onderon to free it from Separatist control. Briefly mentioned as an aside a few episodes ago, but there is an ongoing blockade of the planet Ghorman by the Empire. Mentioning just because Saw referred to a "Ghorman Front" I don't know how far ahead you record, but if you're able to schedule it this way I would highly recommend watching Season 2 episodes 3 at a time. This is how they were released and each set of 3 episodes form a very distinct story arc. You don't need to drop the Watch Alongs 3 at a time, obviously, but I think there's something to be gained from watching them together as what are essentially four movies instead of one episode at a time.

A More Civilized Age is a Star Wars podcast that ended up doing 2-3 hour deep dive episodes after each episode of Andor. Highly recommended if folks want more supplemental insights and discussion.

awe dang we def missed it so we can def go back and see!

It was both a minor and major scene lol. Like missing it doesn’t change a lot for the show but if you know anything about StarWars it does make you go, “oh wow”. 😮
