Oda cooks when it comes to writing: especially hate for the Celestial Dragons. This backstory gives even more depth to Luffy’s suffering. (he lost a second brother after Ace’s oath to live forever). Just like you said when Luffy fought the Admirals, Luffy has to get stronger. Bro ran out of brothers 😭 🎩 🔥

Well if he alive and didn’t come save ace at marine ford he just a piece of shit like garp. So would u even wanna see him at that point?

Mike G. M.

For what its worth; you are not the only person that suspected Sabo might be alive. Though really the bigger debate was less if he was or not but moreso if he should be. There were some people that insisted that if he was alive would make Luffys character worthless and return things back to the “Nobody dies in One Piece” feeling, and others that insisted that he needs to be alive and reintroduced so the story has a replacement for Ace. Looking back it’s probably the second or maybe third most controversial point when discussing Odas writing in the series.

And yet somehow this whole flashback arc did nothing to make me feel for Luffy. If anything my opinion of him ended up dropping because of how much nothing this arc gave me to care about.

Dr. M (Mrugalski)

A agree, this backstory hits so hard and really recontextualizes Luffys life and dream and demeanor as a person/captain. What a goated protagonist

Dr. M (Mrugalski)

Ace finally crying and letting out those feelings is heart breaking every time

one pice glazers lol, the writing is alright, but come on, if u say the writing is super due to celestial dragons then im speechless, celestial dragons have no personality and are so bland and boring, its black and white in one piece, ur either evil or ur good, there is almost no grey characters or villains showing signs of redeeming qualities or anything, they are just made total evil for the sake of it to portray that they need to be defeated for the main cast because they are the good ones, 0 complexity lol

Mike G. M.

Honest question Dr. Mru: can you explain why Luffy's backstory hits hard to you? Cause speaking personally I found this entire backstory boring as sin.

Nicholas Kent

Oda... what's fascinating about this mangaka is that beyond his talent as an author, he's a great improviser! Because let's be clear, Sabo wasn't at all planned in the original script! Like many other elements, by the way. But he managed to introduce a third brother who is endearing, interesting AND who explains certain details of Ace and Luffy's life. Like the fact that Ace has a crossed-out S tattooed on his arm or why Luffy and Ace decided to leave the Goa kingdom at 17!

Mike G. M.

Yep; that's the one thing I even I can't say against his writing. Even if I don't like a lot of the things he comes up with; the amount of story that Oda has somehow managed to seemlessly integrate into the world is astounding, and good grief do I wish I had that level of skill.

Dr. M (Mrugalski)

sure, it hits hard for a bunch of reasons. Firstly because of the context of where it starts; right after Ace's death. Because we know he just died, it makes it really powerful/sad to know whats coming despite Ace and Sabo talking about being free and living how they want. Ace living in his fathers shadow, Sabo under his parent's thumb, and Luffy being alone in the world are all terrible conditions we want to see them break free from. Another reason is watching a bond form between 3 people and grow. If you've ever had a friend good enough that you can call them a brother, then you know how special it is to have those connections. Another is Dadan and seeing her pretend to not care while becoming more and more motherly. Luffy getting stronger and learning his powers is really cool to see because you see how terrible it was at first and how Ace dismissed it, but we know in the future how strong he gets, primarily because of his time now during his childhood. Sabo meeting Dragon and finally having someone listen to him about how awful the nobles are. Sabo dying after almost getting off the island is so tragic, which leads to Ace finally breaking in private and showing how much he loved his brother. As well as Luffy wanting to get stronger so he can protect people he loves. And then when this flash back ends, you see how Dadan, Shanks, Makino, Garp are feeling about Marineford events. I don't see how these things could be considered boring or not hard hitting. If you care about the characters at all it hits hard. Its fine if you don't care about Luffy or Ace or Sabo, but then I have to question what you like about this show then?

Dr. M (Mrugalski)

What about Mosgard and Rosinante and Homing? Are you caught up on the manga? Because there is some complexity to the situation, which I won't spoil. Most of them are flat out cartoonishly evil, just like the nobles in this arc. Thats why its satisfying to see them get hit or suffer in return for their atrocities, but yeah those aren't very complex. I think they are in the story to mimic real life though, because there are definitely some people in power how are like that. There are plenty of other non celestial dragon villains that are complex as well, so its not like the story is missing complex heroes/villains.

If Sabo were alive he wouldn’t pull a garp on him and let ace get executed in Marineford.

Mike G. M.

> but then I have to question what you like about this show then? At this point? Basically nothing; much to my chagrin. There's a few moments on occasion where I go "oh, that's kinda cool", but that's about it, it's just the sporadic interesting idea in a sea of things I genuinely don't care about in the slightest. And tbh; I really loathe myself for that; cause when I see every other person talking like you about how emotionally impactful this series is, and I'm sitting here looking through your entire list going "None of this means or does anything to me", what else am I going to do but feel like a loser for not seeing the obvious stuff that you apparently do?

Dr. M (Mrugalski)

Im sorry man. Well not everything needs to be everyone cup of tea, that doesnt make you a loser. Whats your favorite anime/TV show?

I'm a bit late, but I will point out the Bluejam WAS right there, and he WAS strong, so if they ALL ran away then nothing would be stopping Bluejam from chasing them also, it wouldn't be difficult, and he had a gun, so as he's chasing them he could hurt them and he WILL eventually catch up, after all he's the strongest one in the whole group. So while running might have seemed sensible, what would be the plan afterwards? You'd still be stuck with Bluejam and everyone is still in danger... So SOMEONE had to stay back to keep Bluejam from chasing after the others, and it had to be someone strong enough to stall Bluejam at least little bit... So with that in mind, with no one else volunteering, then Luffy is quite litterally still in danger from Bluejam and Ace is correct in thinking that is he (or someone else who is capable) didn't stay behind then the risk is there that Luffy or anyone else could be hurt/lost..

Also, while Ace was not the strongest and Roger was strong, Garp did say the "Even when he faced a cloud of enemies BEYOND his power" (other translations are similar) Roger would not run, so in Ace's position in Marineford where he was not the strongest one there among his allies or enemies, and he faced an opponent that was stronger than him, Roger would also not have ran away even being as strong as Ace.
