One Piece is in it's own league when it comes to world-building. I love how they make every island look like a version of heaven. It's so good, that every One Piece fan can literally draw a mental map of the One Piece universe and tell you exactly what happened at each location. No other anime even remotely compares

Nicholas Kent

I'll always say it. One Piece is more than a Shonen Nekketsu. Oda's work shouldn't be lumped into the same category as Bleach, Naruto, HxH, Demon Slayer, or even Dragon Ball. Please! Here, we're dealing with a hero fantasy open-world with a piracy package and an incredible level of consistency built over almost 30 years. This is something else. This universe is so huge it's almost TOO huge. To the point where Oda can outsource certain plots and sometimes get to the point a little too quickly. He's created a monster with unlimited potential. Any arc has a character or storyline worth exploring in a side book.

Never ask a Sanji fan what happened in fishman island

Star

yea the sanji stuff gets a bit weird in this arc.. I understand plot wise how its a side effect of where he was during the timeskip and that its played up a bit with the jokes, but its a bit much in this arc. he gets better later on

Okay, since there's only 2 weeks before you're going to get to this point, I might as well start talking about it now; You are going to need someone probably on your discord or one of your editors to send you a slightly edited version of episode 536 for you to watch so that massive mistake the anime made in that episode doesn't ruin the whole arc for you. Fishman island is already one of the more... controversial(?) arcs in the series, the last thing that's needed is for the anime to invalidate the entire message.

Why edited? I watch the original content, how the mangaka intended

Mike G. M.

Thats sort of the point: it decisively is not what the mangaka intended. Its famously the one time in the anime that they decided to add a scene that goes directly against the message that Oda is trying to make in the arc. Like: do you remember all the way back at the start of the anime where they made Zoro cut steel, and then in the Alabasta arc he learns how to cut steel? Well, imagine if instead of something like that, the added a scene that showed a flashback that showed Vivi being a common thief that looked up to Crocodile and wanted to help him destroy Alabasta before it was revealed that she was actually the princess trying to stop him. Its that level of “this is the complete opposite of the story that the mangaka wants to portray, simply because they needed to fill a few extra minutes of runtime.” It actively destroys one of the most important plot points of the entire arc. Literally, i’m wanting you to have this part removed so that you *can* experience the story like Oda intended. Filler is one thing, this scene is beyond that, because we cant even point out that it doesn’t exist in the manga without giving spoilers for what it means to the story.

AccordingToLucky

But why would Oda allow that and why would they do that, now i wanna see it even more and u can just point out that it didnt happen lol

Mike G. M.

Why did Oda let them? Simple: he didn’t have a choice, because Oda is not the one in charge of how the anime plays out: that is Toei’s job~ Like he’s allowed input on the matter when he decides he wants too, but at the end if the day, technically speaking animations studios are technically allowed to censor, change and make additions to any manga they’re adapting. Thats just how copyright works in Japan. Its why shows like Naruto and Shippuden are allowed to have 100-episode long stretches of anime only content without Kishimoto having to approve every single plot point; he’s not in charge of the anime, it’s no longer his show. And its the same thing here. Alright fine~ You want me to point out the plot-breaking part? I’ll point out the plot breaking part lol. And Im already predicting that when i do you’ll either be utterly confused why that scene should’ve been skipped until they reveal it 20 episodes later, or you’ll figure out one of the biggest twists of the arc a full 20 episodes before you’re supposed to, and I cant wait to see which it is XD

Mike G. M.

Yeah: I kinda noticed lol. I feel like my attempt at warning may have backfired 😂

Who the hell is Vander Decken? We all know the captain of the Flying Dutchman is Davy Jones!

Nah, u cant tell me i aint hilarious lmao I crack myself up sometimes 😭

That said, I'm not saying that One Piece has no flaws! Some arcs or elements of arcs annoyed me. The refusal to let its characters die (with some exceptions) is a huge flaw that killed the stakes of certain arcs in my opinion. BUT this manga remains a work that will be worth studying when it is finished. Oda can sit at Tolkien's table and eat with him as an equal.
