I was waiting for this! Peakness right here

Mike G. M.

Yeah... I kinda had a feeling that you'd be reacting the way you did to the first half of this ep lol. I think the best way to explain why everyone was so against Mustang killing Envy is to use the fact that the show itself gives a strong counter example to this whole scene, and appropriately, that counterexample is actually the last time Mustang managed to kill a homunculus. All the way back when Mustang killed Lust, her final words were "I love how cold and focused your eyes are". During that fight, Mustang had one goal in mind, and that was to stop Lust by killing her as effectively as possible. She was a threat to the people he cared about, so his goal was to stop her and protect them, and that was it. No one had a problem with what he did to Lust, and if that *was* what Mustang was doing with Envy, no one would've had a problem here either. But it's not what's happening. You even noticed at the start of the episode that he waits for Envy to speak before attacking. That's because Mustang isn't *actually* trying to kill Envy here; he's trying to torture him. Death is a thing that is going to come to Envy eventually, but that's not what Mustang actually wants. He wants Envy to suffer; he's deliberately drawing it out and holding back so that he can make him suffer as long as possible. Hawkeye basically says that the problem she has wasn't Mustang killing Envy, it was having him kill Envy in this state. Mustang is so consumed by rage at the end that he openly admits that he's willing to cripple Ed just to make Envy suffer more. We've seen how accurate Mustang can be with his flames; even if Ed did have Envy in his hand, Mustang has enough control to only hit Envy if the only thing he wanted was for Envy to die. But he's not doing that; he's not even considering it as an option, because he is entirely running on nothing but hatred and vengeance to the point that he's even willing to hurt his own allies because they are slowing him down. It’s not that they think Envy doesn't deserve to die; all three of them openly agree that they refuse to let him live, because of all the things he did. You yourself keep mentioning how Envy deserves to die because of if what he did in Ishval and all the other things he did, but do you think Mustang is thinking that? The only reason Mustang is wanting to hurt Envy is because of Hughes: he doesn’t care about anything else Envy has done, because this is personal to him and he just wants to let his rage out on the person that hurt him. That is what Ed and Hawkeye are trying to stop: they don't want Mustangs rage to properly consume him, which will happen if they don't stop him from fully surrendering to it now. You say that Mustang is just going to be fine if they let him kill Envy in this state but... is he? Anger is easy, and it's also addictive like a drug. If you do something while angry and you feel better because of it, your mind isn't going to think you feel better because of what you did; it's going to say you feel better 'because' of the anger. And it becomes easier to get angry, you start lashing out at smaller and smaller things, because internally you start thinking that anger is going to help; you're trying to chase the rush and satisfaction that came from the first time. (And I don't like admitting this but... I have years of personal experience with this exact scenario; honestly I'm still not actually over it yet. I can only wish I had people like Ed and Hawkeye that would've held me back the first time before I set myself on a really bad path) At the very least though, you did recognise (sort of) the real central theme of the episode, and I'm glad you resonated with what it means for someone like Envy to be rendered powerless because no-one is acting the way he wants. It's a very "Fishman Island" theme appropriately enough; the idea that the most devastating thing you can do to someone spewing hatred is to just see it as pointless. If you refuse to engage, then hatred has no power, not over you, and definitely not over the scenario. At that point, the only thing it can really do is just disappear.

This episode is indeed one of the best in the show imo. From now on though, they're all crazy good! And tbh, I kinda agree, they should just have let Mustang burn that little shit 😂
