Bruh nobody dies in One Piece, how the hell is Brownbeard alive? We saw him be blasted in the face multiple times point blank, barrels so big they can be considered cannons, the cool guy literally put it in his face, he was sniffing it, he was smoking on his barrel like a Newport, he was confirmed dead on the spot, what the freakin hell!😭 Oda’s an idiot.

It’s interesting when you think about the morality of abducting and experimenting on children. The power that they want can only be given to whom has a pure heart. That’s why he’s stepping so low as to harm children in the most ruthless ways.

one piece pacing problem that everybody complains about appears clearly during these arcs Due to Oda's hospitalization during these chapters and anime is catching up to manga, they started to make one chapter per episode which resulted in slow pacing. Arc starting and ending will naturally be fine because of how much content those chapters have but in the middle chapters where the story slows down a bit the episodes will be draging like adding shocked faces or people running and all the padding they do to make up the episode time.

It makes Ace’s death way too weird, even Luffy was pierced through the chest multiple times throughout the show but eats meat and all is okay lol.

I don’t understand why they can’t wait like every other show. Why are they so compelled to release an episode every week like who has a gun to their head? Because they’re making the show worse this whole episode was just Caesar getting the kids from the cave. The scenes take so long I was like “come on already!” Lol

Combination of Japanese animation habits and contractual obligations. When One Piece started, this was basically how every long running anime was made; it was supposed to come out on a weekly basis. When Toei got the rights to animate the series back in 1999, it was given to them with the expectation that they were to animate at a pace that would fill up a weekly timeslot on Japanese Television. It was standard practice at the time because it allows advertisers to sync up better, plus the boom of anime studios from the 60's to the 80's was only a thing because a few studios had figured out how to efficiently produce anime at a weekly pace, and so that practice was just industry norm for the longest time. You ask why they can't wait like "Every other show", but long running anime being seasonal wasn't really a thing until they decided to try doing it with MHA in 2015, and even then it took a while for the whole industry to catch up (It's why both Boruto and Black Clover were made as weekly anime even though they started in 2017). When this particular episode came out in 2013; this *was* the production schedule of 'every other show' that was happening at the time. At this point the Naruto anime was just wrapping up the Pain Arc, and the Bleach anime was just finally getting around to dealing with Aizen and was still 2 years away from going on indefinite hiatus. (The difference between them though is that the other two series were still using the "filler" tactic to meet their contractually obligated production quota, and keep the pacing of the canon episodes relatively compact, whereas One Piece for some reason had stopped using that strategy about 5 years earlier, and at this point Oda was the slowest among the three at producing new chapters, so Toei was taking hits from both ends.) You'll be happy to know though that by all accounts; Toei has finally managed to lawyer up enough that they might finally be taking the anime seasonal or at the very least semi-seasonal.

The studio is obligated by who? It’s like they’re afraid they’ll go to prison for this lol. Common sense would suggest they include in their contract to say we only animate what the author has published, so they don’t put themselves in a state of creating new side stories as fillers or worsening the current story under their own production. This feels like basics but it might be deeper than I imagine it being, because it doesn’t sense.

It's absolutely a cultural thing. Like I said; the reason anime got so big in Japan the way it did is because animation studios learned how to produce anime on a weekly basis, which then grew into them being *expected* to be able to produce them on a weekly basis. I can only really suggest looking into how Japanese work culture and ethics functions, but the long and short of it is the idea that "If you do not suffer for your work and push yourself to breaking point to provide more than what the boss asks you, then you are a personal disgrace and an embarrassment to anyone that knows you". If you were an animator or any sort of office worker in early 2000's Japan, you were not only expected to get paid minimum wage, work 16 hour days and even be willing to sleep at your office and ignore your family, but you were also expected to be *happy* about it, because that's what it meant to be a good person. Not 'employee' mind you; person. It was a moral obligation far more than any legal one. You weren't doing it because it was in your contract; you were supposed to do it because you wanted to, because that's how everyone you meet would know you were an upstanding person. So your contract would say you start at 9 and finish at 5, but then you'd see one of your coworkers or managers taking overtime until midnight and hear everyone start praising them for being "so dependable and trustworthy" and then you end up noticing your being avoided by people you work with, so because you also want to be seen as someone that can be trusted you have to match that other guy. (And if you didn't want to it? Well then enjoy you and your family being homeless when your boss fires you for "being lazy" and not keeping yourself to the same standards that they kept themselves to and your coworkers are keeping themselves to) You're probably going to say something like "That's ridiculous! How was that ever allowed?" I am not personally qualified to explain the details of why or how it came to be so normalised that everyone over there just understood it without needing to be explicitly taught, but just know that is a concept that is so ingrained into their culture from 500 years worth of societal change development that they have unique words that just mean "Death from being overworked" that people just openly talked about. I'm not going to say that it makes sense or is reasonable; it's just what it is, and it's only really been within the last decade or so that the Japanese government has had to start posting actual laws to make it so that employees cannot be allowed to act this way because was that much of a problem and doing so much damage to the working class of the country they needed legal reforms to try and stop it happening.

g27

You took the words right out of my mouth, lol. That’s ridiculous! How was that ever allowed? Jokes aside, they are supposed to provide more than what is expected of them, but the work they produced is trash. So what I’m getting is that they praise effort over work. The more effort the better, but the better work and product is just expected. All in all, that was a great explanation I enjoyed reading what it means to them I appreciate it.

actually one piece doesn't need to write fillers, if anime studious wanted they could have animated cover stories but since first two cover stories didn't get positive response, they stopped it, in my opinion the first two cover stories have little substance and was stretched to two episodes each and people was actually wanted to see what the strawhats were doing next, Later cover stories have bigger stories and were tied to the canon relatively soon too like Jango one and Hachi one, enel one has a lot of untold lore too. Ace was fan favorite too, his search for Blackbeard could have animated and ended with their fight in canon.

Mike G. M.

You pretty much hit it with that description. As another symptom of how deep the problem is, there's also a word for it in Japanese: "Ganbaru", which (to massively simplify), basically means "The Virtue of being seen constantly over-exerting yourself for the sake of other people". And like I said there's over two centuries worth of history about how this concept became a standard part of Japanese culture and how 21st century life just amplified all the problems that came with it. I also appreciate the words at the end too. Thanks for listening, even if though I know I tend to waffle on far too much at times like this XD

Mike G. M.

I completely agree with you, it was literally right there as easy pickins and they just stopped that as well. They stopped making filler and they even stopped adapting canon-sidestories, and I have no idea why. They're basically the only anime I can think of that took the approach that they did of just stretching out each chapter as much as possible.
