Okay: so I’ve touched on in some previous comments of this series how the anime sometimes leaves out details. This is about the time where I’m going to start talking about them, cause I need to better explain something about Ram, and why the chief that was planning to kill the twins at the beginning seemed so shocked. Quoting directly from the story ‘The Oni Sisters of the Hidden Village’: “On that baby’s forehead, there was only one horn. It was only a single horn, […] an absence that defiled pride, the lack of a horn──and yet — […] everyone in the gathering hung their heads and kneeled. The grey elder, old woman, and the twins’ father and mother were no exceptions. All the Onis at that place kneeled as they submitted to the newly born peak of pride and strength. This was the day when the Oni clan, which had their slow destruction right before their eyes, witnessed the birth of the final Oni god.” And from a little later in the same story: “The oni village also had customs for days of celebration. ──Although, they were mostly days where Ram’s birth was celebrated” The sisters weren’t saved simply because Ram was a powerful prodigy. (Though to be clear: she 100% was. The author claimed at one point that had Ram never lost her horn, during the current day she would likely be one of the 5 strongest characters in the Re:Zero universe) but more than that: Ram was seen to the rest of her race to literally be their messiah, their Jesus. She was their god reborn in a mortal shell, but burdened to never reach their full strength in this life due to the “curse” of being born as a twin.
