For all we know, Burgess wasn't necessarily trying to get the Flame-Flame Fruit for Blackbeard, it actually looked and sounded to me like he wanted to eat it himself. Keep in mind, Blackbeard already has a Logia fruit, and an arguably stronger one than the Flame-Flame Fruit at that.

Once again, it’s just insane how powerful Doffy is! - He’s been controlling the Birdcage for nearly an hour. - He controlled countless people, forcing them to kill each other. - He fought both Law and Luffy. - Luffy wounded him. - Law fried his internal organs. - He took Gear 4 Luffy’s attacks head-on. YET, he's still able to fight and force Luffy to retreat—only saved by the help of the Coliseum people. If it had been a 1v1, Luffy obviously would have lost. As for Sabo, Oda found a new way to justify him not stepping in against Doffy xD What I really like about Luffy's Gears 2, 3, and 4 is that they aren't really transformations, strictly speaking. I mean, they aren't natural transformations like Son Goku's SSJ or SSJ2. The concept is closer to Kaioken or SSJ3—which are essentially steroid-like boosts—and while the power-up is significant, it always comes with side effects. And when you really think about it, Luffy is the only one in One Piece with boosts like that. As if Oda wanted to justify Luffy being able to beat up people two or three times his age

The Dark-Dark fruit is arguably the strongest devil fruit in terms of combat against other devil fruit users. He was only looking for that one fruit out of all of the fruits he memorized the designs of. He even admitted he would have just remained in Whitebeard's shadow forever had he not came across it. It's broken strong just in terms of the shear nullification of devil fruit powers through contact. He can just pull them towards him and nullify their powers entirely. If admirals didn't have haki, Blackbeard would wipe the floor with all of them imo
