The only contest Patreon allows me to hold is the first comment first server contest. I can't hold the *R* Word. I'm not even allowed to say it.

Would you like it if I had a random time generated each month to allow people in different time zones a better chance?

I can also suspend winners for a month or two in order to give new people a better shot.

I'm up for suggestions.

I know Rick Griffin does it not as a contest, but a monthly sketch request stream, where he selects 6-10 requests per stream, and prioritizes people who haven't received requests in 4 months or longer.

Could you raffle instead? Some people are essential workers and otherwise cannot participate in this kind of contest.

Kina

Oh shit I just realized what you meant mybad

Kina

Is there any way something could be done off the site in that style?

Kina

Holding one through discord or a 3rd party could work, no? Sorry for the message spam ^w^

I think suspending winners from previous ones is a good idea. And for the contest, maybe picking random people from the tiers for the rewards through a name generator type thing would be best, that way it's not just on, say, who has the quicker internet connection or who happens to be awake at the right time.

Skeleion

A stream is kinda out of the question as I have enough work as it is with commissions, monthly fan art, and these contest images. The contest is mostly a bonus perk to go along with the packs I put out each month as well as speedpaints. I'm willing to adjust the contest to make it fairer such as time adjustments and winner suspensions. But so far all new people have won the contest this month so I'm honestly not seeing too much of an issue.

Yes that's a way better idea then the 'frist commenter wins' non sense. Depending on jobs and internet speed most of your patreons will never even know their was a contest before it was over. If you give 24 hours for people to comment and choose a winner at random that then almost all your patreons that give you money each month gets a chance to win.

Skeleion

That's a raffle I can't do that. Patreon says no. Only the first comment first serve.

levin hardin

That's bullshit. Well if you can only do that stupid first comment thing then you just shouldn't do the free sketch thing at all since the first comment game essentially cheats your paying patreons that actually have something to do during the day

By the time Patreon alerts me via email, I'm already too late. It's happened a few times already, so I'm already under the assumption I will never catch one in time. The only thing I can think of, as another Patreon creator, is to reach out to Patreon themselves to offer acceptable alternatives. I had a call with one of the creator advisors back in December, and they were working with me to improve my engagement with patrons, etc.

maybe only allow one win per tier until everybody in that tier has won, that way everybody is guaranteed to win eventually if they stay, or going through on a list based on whohas been here the longest, or alphabetical or something. its not a raffle if who the winner will be is decided in advance. announce who gets the art at the beginning of the month and give them 24 hours to claim it before you move on to the next person i just know that i cant pay money to be put in a contest that i know for a fact i will never win

Hukacikanaka

I like the random time. You could also post for each tier at a different time of the day. And even switch when each tier comes out every month. That way every month a different timezone has a better chance of winning a given tier.

Skeleion

Ok, so I could make the time and day random for each tier and have each one come out on different days as well as time. That could make things fairer and stop sniping. Thanks for the suggestion.

Thank you for trying so hard and making an effort to engage with us as your patrons Ash! We know it's tough to come up with ideas and stay within Patreon's guidelines. You are doing really great and honestly I'm just thankful to be able to support you and your beautiful work. Because that's what this is about.

Kimbunny

If you are looking for ideas, I think your random time idea is really smart! I'm not sure if it would help or hurt, but it seems like most people are upset because they are relying on Patreon's notification system to tell them when you've posted. And since it doesn't go out instantly, the slot is already taken up by the time they are even aware it's happening. Maybe it would be good to announce when the post for the contest will be going up? That way people could at least make the effort to be watching and waiting at a specific time and not have to rely on Patreon's notifications?

DARVIdD2

there was an announcement abouut a week in advance, my problem is as long as it is post first i will never win, cause i am too slow, i was waiting for the contest, and was there when it went up, but it was done in less than a second i want some method that actually makes it possible for me to win occasionally, i actually dislike the random time idea, because, i someone will always be checking more often than me

Hukacikanaka

Have you downloaded the Patreon app on your mobile device? It can send you live notifications as soon as a post goes up.

Skeleion

I have been told that the Patreon app on mobile devices gives quicker notification vs email.

Sherbert Shenanigans!

If I have my phone out and volume on at the time the post is made, then I do get a notification. But it's still too late due to the speed at which notifications arrive, and the fact I'm not always looking at my phone at that exact moment. I can't drop a client call or business meeting to jump in immediately.

Skeleion

If I make the time randomized when the contest is posted then that would kinda fix the problem with you always getting notification while at work or something. Giving everyone a better chance as well.

Wuffball

Unfortunately anything short of a straight up raffle is gonna have issues, and patreon has your arms tied in that regard

Suel

I think the way you handle it is pretty good. You announce the exact time a long time in advance, so it was even possible for me to be successfull. I wouldn't rely on app notifications when I know the exact time. Of course shuffling the time around each month would be nice because there will always be some who can't participate because it will be in the middle of the night or during work. And I thought you already had a timeout mechanism implemented, so it won't be the same people winning all the time?

Squirrelybits

I think randomizing the times each month is a great idea.

Hukacikanaka

What if instead of First Comment First Serve it was Third Comment First Served? That way those who have slower notifications have a better chance?

Skeleion

"And I thought you already had a timeout mechanism implemented, so it won't be the same people winning all the time?" I do but that was for people that won twice. Not in general. Granted that was back when I had few patrons so rules may need to be adjusted.

Cownugget

Rather than be the first one to comment, you could have a "guess a number between 1 and ???" Otherwise you have everyone lined up at the designated time, all posting single word or single letter posts at once. There really is difference in interactivity, and people could simply post their guessed number at their leisure throughout the day, rather than stay awake, or set everything aside to bum-rush at a specific time.
