The story is: Saoirse knows 2 things about her estranged mother: 1) she’s an extremely clever and talented witch, 2) she’s dead. The story begins at the funeral, when Saoirse and her father are summoned to hear her mother’s dying wish, and it contains strict instructions about Saoirse’s future.
