Trying to maintain a practical heat shield for that in RL would be a major undertaking and probably would end with you giving up on space planes like NASA did with the space shuttle. NASA said a space plane is way to much trouble right now. I hope Kerbal Space Program is very forgiving. Even Elon said that planes are for the atmosphere and are impracticable for outer space. Why did NASA allow the US Air Force and US Navy to bully theme into making a space that they knew would be extremely difficult to maintain a good safety record?

Well there is not a lot of difference between a 'terrain alignment collision' and a 'the terrain came a lot sooner then expected collision', so who knows.

The sad irony of calling it the "Torque Jet" and failing to take off... fulcrum, lever arms, something, something... consider where the fixed gear on most aircraft are located relative to key structures. FYI, by default Kerbals that are killed will eventually respawn if you keep them on the active roster, though there's a difficulty option which can disable that.

I believe the runway upgrade makes it a little easier to control on the ground... this being said, at best I have only ever achieved a from of semi-ballistic atmospheric flight!

I prefer to think that the Kerbals are Buddhist and Tanrod and Katniss are reincarnated. Explains the delay and experience reset. If I'm right, I would be concerned about the Kernal's karma.
