The New Bad Company Game (Patreon)
Content
We have reached the end of the road with Atlas.
It's a good "world" that is lacking in enough zest to keep players hooked over a sustained period. At least that's my take. It's also very very expensive to host - each of the 6 servers needed for our map costing £20 per month. It goes without saying that I wish to offer a massive thankyou to those who donated towards the running costs.
So what's next?
We're heading into Minecraft.
Yes, that old thing. As much as it's having a video-based renaissance at present it also offers more freedom to explore and build than almost any other game. With the addition of mods it can become almost whatever you want it to be.
So what's the plan?
Right now we're locking down which mod packs are suited to what we're doing. What are almost certain to make the cut:
- - Additional animals and sea critters (for the tamers)
- - Additional realms, planets, monsters (for the explorers)
- - Improved minecarts or trains (for the train people)
- - Improved crop choices (for the farmers)
- - Automation and machines (for the factory workers)
- - Things for fighting with (for the PVP folk)
- - More block choices (for the builders)
- - Quests and magic (for the gamers)
We'll have a solid walk-through of how to get set up once the server is ready. We'll try to keep it as simple as possible. It goes without saying that because this is modded you'll need to be playing on PC.
What's established so far is the overall theme or project. We're going to take The Crystal Maze as the overriding rule for the world: basically we'll be theming construction and styling in 4 ways. Medieval, Industrial, Aztec and Futuristic - those will be based off compass points.
The Medieval Zone will be to the north of the original spawn. Industrial will be east. Aztek to the south and Futuristic to the west.
Yes, you can use all mods no matter which zone you're in, but any building should be themed to fit your zone. Want to build in more than one zone? You can. You can build alone, as part of a team, or not build at all, that's wholly up to you.
PVP will again be consensual, however the difference will be that one zone will be declared a no war zone. PVP will only occur during "events". Those events will range from player versus player gladitorial events to zone versus zone missile combat. Outside of events there will be no PVP without consent.
Normal rules apply regarding player property: don't wreck stuff belonging to someone else.
More details will be coming this week, but if you have a specific mod you think would be good please stick a comment below.
The Atlas servers will be switched off this coming Friday (to avoid us having to pay another month).
