Red Dwarf | Out of Time S6 Ep6 | Gallifrey Gals Get Dwarfed

Comments

Lemmy's Mole

yep, that ending...can you imagine the nationwide profanity at the time?..It was epically foul & unrepeatable.

Paul Baldwin

I am of the opinion in my head cannon that listers body melted in the orignal time line they had the time drive but at that point in that timeline they didn't have a faster than light drive. that timeline was ended when the og boys from the dwarf took a stand against themselves Also notice that not even rimmer was ok with what his future self become hanging around with nazis and various other monsters and he gladly chooses to fight

Paul Baldwin

The four year break by a lot of people was considered to be permenant in that red dwarf was going to end on out of time.

Cedric Bombs

Great reaction to a great episode Are you still doing reactions to the making of documentaries for each series?

Troy Convers

The end of Classic Era RD, and the start of Cinematic Era RD is just around the corner. As Stan Lee would say in an X-Men comic: now, EVERYTHING changes!

Jakob1978

Be interesting to see your reactions to the making of for this episode, cause there was a lot of problems with the script being very very late (to the point that in a lot of the scenes, they’re reading off autocues because they didn’t have time to learn the lines). That’s also why it’s a bottle episode with no new sets and no guest cast.

Jordan Falls

originally a 4 year gap until the next episode... thank god it's not like that now

Wilss

How do you think we felt? We had to wait 4 years til the next series. Oh you just mentioned it, ha.

Jasper de Vries

This is the episode when the script wasn't finished before shooting and every crew member got an auto cue with some lines being written moments before the actors got to them. By that standard, I think it is a remarkably coherent episode.

Wade Wallenstein

"This could have easily been the last episode ever. A new series was not aired until 1997, over three years later. This was despite the interest of the BBC in creating another series after the success of the previous few series. The hiatus was caused by the end of the Grant Naylor writing partnership and the Red Dwarf chaos that followed. New Red Dwarf was released during those years, however, in the form of Doug Naylor's and Rob Grant's conflicting sequels to the novel Better Than Life called Last Human and Backwards respectively."

Lizbeth Marcs

They were also writing parts of the script and feeding the lines directly into autocue while the cast was filming in front of a live audience. In the Making Of... featurette, Robert Llewellyn talks about how they were performing for the audience and seeing his lines disappear in front of his eyes only to have them replaced with all new lines.

Lizbeth Marcs

For those of us in the U.S. watching via our local PBS station, the wait for Series 7 was more like 5 years.

Susan K Dailey Photography

Nobody knows the full story of what happened with the creators. The actors seemed as confused as all of us, and Doug Naylor (the creator who still works on Red Dwarf) hinted he didn't know either. It's all very sad and very strange. Rob Grant had been wanting to work on his own for a while though, but he upped and left sometime after series 6, when the pair were working on another show. The BBC pushed a script back to Rob Grant to revise and instead he just upped and left and that was that. Series 7 was delayed for a few different reasons, none of them good.

BazT47

When I go to play it I get a message saying sorry we are having trouble?!

Time Lord

We have them in our catalog to watch and definitely plan on going back and revisiting ones we've passed so far. Next week will be the making of series 6!

Jonathan Giles

Hell yeah. Getting into the later seasons. Some people don't like the later episodes but that's not me lol. Can't wait to re watch with the GG Crew

Cojuancidence

Please make sure next series has laugh track, some recordings have been edited but im sure you know where to look!* Thanks for spreading the dwarf realm! Check out "coupling' Its what "friends" was based on... or other way around.. not sure but its got a cast you will recognize or will surprise you*

Raven Stromdans

I actually missed out on the big gap, as I didn't resume watching Red Dwarf after catching the first few early seasons as a teenager until after Series 8 had already been broadcast. I will say, I'm actually a big fan of this episode and really enjoy the cliffhanger (and even more enjoyed how absolutely incensed Paula looked at being presented with a "To Be Continued" from a Red Dwarf series finale! You could probably hear my cackle from space). I do find it a bit out of character for the crew to become their horrible future counterparts, especially Lister and Kryten. I suppose power and privilege admittedly have the potential for warping even the best people, which as much as I love the crew, they generally speaking are not. Hell, that's even kind of evidenced by Kryten, arguably the most incorruptible and morally stable of the bunch, having such a violent and sudden turn on Lister when he thought he was a previous model of mechanoid. I think what really sells me on this episode though is Rimmer finally deciding to take a stand ("Better dead than smeg!" ) and making a desperate run to the time drive to try to circumvent the entire timeline after the rest of the crew died in combat. I don't know that it redeems him for all the other cowardly, backhanded stuff he did throughout the series, but it shows he *was* capable of more than he thought all along. Or at least that's how I choose to interpret it. Keep Calm and Smeg On, Gallifrey Gals! Me and Mr. Flibble will be trying to smoke kippers in the limbo of this redundant timeline until you return with Series 7!

Jade Ellis

I had the same thing but seems to be working now.

Salix

Not sure how true it is but I remember hearing/reading that the gap wasn't just the written split but also to do with what Craig Charles went through. (The trial. Look into it if you want but trigger warning for SA⚠️) Anyway. Always loved this ep. I was young during the gap so don't really remember it. I remember watching series 7 when it started but that's it. 🙃

Bruce Bromley

You thought Doctor Who was timey-wimey.😁 Thankfully I didn't have to wait the four years on my PBS station. but it was a bit before I learned what happened. One of the few, if not first time Rimmer showed some courage. So looking forward to your reactions to Tikka to Ride , it's look, tone and storyline.

Mab7373822

For me, this was the sequel to series 2's Stasis Leak. That was the episode where Lister first met his future self, who was a rude jerk who went back in time onto Red Dwarf and married Kochanski. He might have lived with her up until the accident that killed the crew, and somehow survived it as a brain in a jar. Future Rimmer also had a mustache, just like he does here. Its a long long call back.

Richard Royston

I was around 7 years old when season 6 ended and I cried at the end of because I thought it was all over, I was super excited when season 7 was announced

Time Lord

I think Vimeo was having some issues today. It should hopefully work itself out, but we'll keep an eye on it!

Eric

Not only do they not find Red Dwarf, but Starbug is also destroyed! They doubled down! (And they all die, I guess... 😂)

Matthew Hanlon

That was just how it ended for, as you say, four years. We had no idea if it was ever coming back. I do love Chris Barrie’s performance as he pleads with Kryten at the end, some of his best imo.

Nolan

Future Lister did also say that "In another 5 years you find another way to go back in time." Well, we're on Series 6 now, five years later... I assume Kochanski left Lister when he started getting horrible.

Nolan

Paula getting to feel the payback for inflicting "The Best of Both Worlds" on poor unsuspecting Kat, lol.

Brodie Vickers

You never go full Lister.. believe me I know😉

Chris Devlin

Series 6 was the first series I watched as it aired. The cliffhanger ending, not knowing when or even IF the show would come back. At one point it really did feel like we would never get any resolution. 3 and a bit years we had to wait for the show to come back. But it's never the same from this point on. The split between Rob and Doug leads to a noticably different style. I'm really looking forward to how you react to Series 7 as it's probably the biggest change in production values and style that the show goes through.

David Tully

I'm not going to trash later series of this show but this always felt the right ending for Red Dwarf to me. In my own headcanon, I see all later episodes as Doug's alternative future where they don't die. It's a shame that Rob and Doug couldn't work together again as future series do suffer. There are still good episodes to come but by the reboot, the show stops being funny. That's just my personal opinion and everyone else is entitled to theirs. If anyone is interested in what Rob did next, he did a quite poor sitcom called Dark Ages before a series called The Strangerers - another sci-fi show. It was first screened by Sky (before they co-funded the first season of the Battlestar Galactica reboot). It was never reshown after it first aired and it has never been put out on DVD/Blu-ray. If anyone is interested in watching it, a version was uploaded to YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@robgrantsthestrangerers1434. The first episode has some great stuff with Mark Williams, Jack Docherty and (a young) Milton Jones getting out of their spaceship and trying human form for the first time. It's a strange and uneven show but it was rather funny. With the lawsuit between Rob and Doug being resolved last year, it means there is a possibility of TWO Red Dwarf shows being aired in the future. Rob is writing Red Dwarf: Titan at the moment, which is a prequel and we'll see if it does get off the ground. Doug, I believe can now get on with doing more Specials. Hopefully, we'll hear more soon.

Skyrous

A note about series 7. There were so many effects shots and remote shoots that they decided not to film in front of a live audience. Instead the filmed the episode and showed it to an audience to get the laughter. Unfortunately this means the laughter steps on some of the lines. The actors didn't care for this because being stage actors and standup comics they like having the audience so series 8 they bring the audience back.

WezMan444

So series 7 was not filmed in front of a live audience so the real version doesn't have laughing. there is a version with a laugh track but of course sometimes you can't hear the line delivery over the laughing.

TuneIntoSanityFM

"Everyone's dead except Rimmer.. and he's Dead" 😂 Not looking good is it..!

Travis Boyle

Yeah there is a 90 minute movie after Series 12. Also pretty hilarious that the moment you Gals start getting into Red Dwarf that Grant and Naylor have a sort of reconciliation and they are both going to make new Red Dwarf content in the future.

Paflad

In true RD fashion it's got nothing to do with the actual plot of the episode but I do adore the whole Kryten/Lister droid interaction. Listers fretting over the detail on his chocolate finger model is the most adorable thing. And so we reach the point that the show, if you believe a certain vocal contingent of fandom, goes off the rails and stops being 'proper' Red Dwarf. To which I say "Pish and Pshaw!" Of course that may mean I'm just super easily pleased, but I'm too much of a raging egotist to believe my taste is anything less than exquisite, so nope, they must all be philistines. It's the only explanation.

Skyrous

Prediction: During the opening credits for series 7 your girls are gonna be like "Wait What?"

pbaker

Brilliant, your reaction is the same as mine in 1993. Basically stunned for the whole day at school after. Especially as I had been spoiled on a completely different ending. Well played Grant Naylor

Sebastian Bodine

I thought by the end of that episode Future Lister had already moved on from Kochanski because he was a spoiled self-indulgent smeghead by that point

Sebastian Bodine

I didn't know that the audience was brought back. I thought they had laugh track for the rest of franchise.

Sebastian Bodine

Easily one of the most impactful cliffhangers a boy could watch at that time. I was catching up watching PBS and my dad renting tapes from Blockbuster and Hollywood Video to get up to speed by the time Series 7 came around. Rob Grant and Doug Naylor did have another ending, but knowing that this may have been their last episode of Red Dwarf, they went with a bold approach. One thing that I can't say about Red Dwarf going from Series 6 and onward, they did not feel like playing it safe with a typical status quo.

Darryl Glynn

Thanks for cheering up my Wednesdays, ladies.

Katrine Myra

Ridiculous as it might seem, I had forgotten that OOT was a cliffhanger! For me - at the time of course, there was barely an internet, and I would watch the episodes from varioues series throughout the show's run here and there as they were randomly shown on Norwegian TV. I didn't see VII until... I think I actually saw VIII before VII, though I might be making that up. I do remember that I specifically went to my first ever convention (of any kind) because they were showing series VIII. And that's how I met my husband. Anyway, as I said in the Rimmerworld comments, I am biting my nails to see what you both think of series VII. There are a couple of lovely episodes in there, and the first one is up there with the best RD there is - but yeah. You'll have looked it up by now, but the last RD produced is the second mini-series - 9 being the first mini-series - and it is honestly one of my favorite bits of RD ever.

Katrine Myra

I do love the novels. They each have their particular charm, but Last Human is my secret favorite.

David Shadwell

Despite the issues with the writing of this episode, this really did feel like a return to form right at the end. It was maybe forced on the writers but just having the 4 main characters (x2) and a limited space was a reminder of the early episodes and focused on character with a good old fashioned Sci-Fi trope to build it around. Some great gags and some great quotes - "I hope you have a quarantine license for that!" was a line we used to frequently dish out to friends whenever they had a dodgy haircut. Well acted throughout. As already mentioned, in my head this is the future Lister and Rimmer we saw in Stasis Leak, on their way to being corrupted. Konchanski had bailed out at some point (or returned to die with the rest of the crew?) due to Lister being a Class A arsehole. So, that future has now been wiped and will not happen. A great end to a good series........ But god, what a long wait for a resolution.

Frank Murphy

There's resolution in the alternative ending

Chris K

I've always thought that too. It makes sense!

Chris K

In many ways, this was worse than the Doctor Who hiatus (despite being much less time). 'Survival' at least had a nice ending. 'Out of Time' gave us a smegging 'TO BE CONTINUED' with all signs being that the show would NOT continue! And then Red Dwarf basically did the same again in Series 8...
