Great episode, Leoben is such an interesting character. Fun watching you theorize. :) Again, intro gave away lots of the episode. :/ I know your stance is "the creators want you to see", but a) it could be an executive/higher-up meddling decision, and b) the creators are capable of bad decisions too.

With regards to your discussion on her switch, I think its a great discussion and there are multiple ways to rationalize it (both in universe and outside of it). IMO though, I think it comes down to what Leoben said about her and Starbuck's classic kneejerk "frak you" response to anyone coming for her. Starbuck's fight or flight is pretty firmly in the fight camp so I'd expect that to always be her first choice. Also regarding Kobol, there's got to be a reason they're the Twelve Colonies, though obviously there has been really no explanation of what that actually means to date. The show can only fit so much backstory in and they're obviously going to feed it organically. Like Gaius and Boomer's conversation, feeding in some exposition about an event (the Troy accident) in a fairly natural way to expand our view into their world. Love it!

Waterboarding became a thing in 2004 when it was reported to have been deemed an acceptable method to interrogate Al Qaeda prisoners who participated in 9/11. Nobody knew at that time if there were more traitors and saboteurs hiding among the general population, planning another attack. They could look like anyone... This episode scared the hell out of me when it first aired. Not in an abstract sci-fi storytelling way, more like a "get ready for the next Twin Towers / Pentagon, it could come any time, anywhere" kind of way. Those were dark days.

I think the thing with Starbuck's seeming turnaround was more based on the fact that she had a job - find the bomb. She became as inhuman as she deemed necessary to accomplish that task and when it was revealed there was no bomb, her job was over and she was more reacting as herself. I'm sure she went through an internal journey as well, but when she was acting as the interrogator, she couldn't show it, and thus we didn't see it at the time.
