Jonathan Giles

One of my favourite episodes of the entire show. Such a great ending for Rimmers character. He will be missed 😢. Looking forward to seeing how the show replaces him and moves on...... Another great reaction

Scribbles

The actor you recognized who was playing the king is Brian Cox! You might know him from Succession. (The queen, by the way, is played by Sarah Alexander. She was one of the main characters in the sitcom from Steven Moffat called "Coupling". I think you'd like it. I normally despise Moffat, but Couplng was really good.)

Susan K Dailey Photography

Now you sadly have a better idea of why Series 7 isn't as popular, but please don't worry - there's still loads of good stuff to come (I personally like series 7 despite the cast change, it's series 8 I have difficulty with)! You should google Bonjela - everyone in Britain winced and laughed at that name!! Also, as someone on tumblr pointed out...the Ace Rimmer Graveyard is the Red Dwarf logo... And Brian Cox has been in so much stuff over the years, he's a great actor! And are you two on tumblr or is there someone pretending to be you?

Brodie Vickers

Yes that was Brian Cox as the King, not the scientist and former keyboard player😄but the other guy! Known as the 1st actor to play Hannibal Lecter (I think) and much, much more.

Jasper de Vries

Sarah Alexander was great in it, not least for using that French accent. But my Coupling crush will always be Gina Bellman.

Raven Stromdans

I love the way this episode reintroduced Ace Rimmer as a legacy role passed form one Rimmer to another throughout the multiverse. The graveyard of Aces really hits me. Much as I was amused by his brief cameo in Emohawk, I feel like this episode did the character better. Also one of my original BBC crushes, Sarah Alexander, playing the Queen and using her patented faux French accent, makes this episode a highlight for me for this series. (if anyone hasn't seen the BBC shows Coupling or Green Wing, I recommend them) Curious to see how well received the next few episodes are, because that's really going to set the tone for the remainder of the series before the big break. Keep Calm and Smeg On, Gallifrey Gals! I'll be here smoking a kipper with...hey...where'd he go? ... MR. FLIBBLE, YOU LEAVE THE QUEEN ALONE!

Brodie Vickers

That Ace Rimmer cemetery scene is my favourite moment of this series, and very possibly the whole show! Very touching moment, an unbroken chain of heroism across time, space, and dimensions.

Jakob1978

Brian Cox also voiced the Chief Ood in David Tennants last (well, first “last”) story “The End of Time”

Katy Robinson

I'd been looking forward to seeing your reactions to this one, and it was as fun as I hoped. Glad you enjoyed it!

Martyn Hill

I'm one of the minority,I like seasons 7 & 8, not as good as S5 of course, but they still have their moments. I am looking forward to your reactions for the rest of the season

Chris Fone

Firstly 00:55 - this is why you don't read spoilers! Phew now that’s out of the way. I should have mentioned last week; yes the visual style and tone has changed a bit. I believe by this point there were thoughts about trying to get a Red Dwarf movie made hence why this season they wanted to not always go for the laugh and be a bit more focussed on drama and poignant moments. Similarly with shooting it on film and everything this year is single camera. And because of this there was no studio audience for this series, the completed shows were shown to audiences afterwards to get their reactions etc. So to this episode now, I think this was the very first episode I saw of this show, it was a very late night repeat, about 11:15, in 2004ish. Needless to say, I didn’t have much of a clue what was happening. At that time my school band, which I was in, had the option of playing the Red Dwarf theme at the end of year concert. Being a British Sci-Fi comedy show I didn’t know much about I must’ve managed to catch this episode around early autumn. I know I then got the Series 1 DVD for my Birthday that October and started collecting them after that. Sadly I didn’t get to play the theme tune in the school band the next year but I became a fan of this show, somewhat by accident, anyway. I think you’d recognise Brian Cox cause he played Sydney Newman in An Adventure in Space and Time!

Troy Convers

It's going to be so interesting getting a WOMAN's perspective on the rest of S7 as it seems that all of the haters are MEN... *looks sternly to camera*

Troy Convers

"Underneath all that neurotic mess is someone nice trying to get out. Someone who deserves a chance to grow." - Nirvanah Crane, from 'Holoship'

Brodie Vickers

Sarah Alexander (The Queen) was also great in the female led sketch show Smack the Pony, very funny! Watch the dating agency videos if you've got some free time.

Bruce Bromley

It was sad to see Chris Barrie leave, but they gave him a great sendoff. He chose to step away because along with Dwarf he was also in another series, The Brittas Empire. He needed the rest. BTW, happy belated birthday to Mr. Barrie, who celebrated his 64th on March 28th, the same day I had my 60th.

Troy Convers

The reason why S7 and S8 have 8 eps is because Naylor was wrapping up the series and the episode count would tally up to 52, and therefore be eligible for syndication.

Troy Convers

I just love how we get a redemption arc for 'our' Rimmer and him becoming Ace was a natural; remember when he turned into Ace in the Emohawk ep when all of his negative emotions were sucked out. Naylor mining continuity to great effect.

Troy Convers

The idea of the 'Ring of Aces' seems to be a homage to an old Green Lantern story where fallen Lanterns rings orbited the home planet Oa.

John Wayne

Braveheart, Rushmore, X2, The Bourne Identity, The Ring, Adaptation, Zodiac, Trick R' Treat, Red, Deadwood, etc.

MCT

IMO S7 does take a downward turn from this point in some ways, but it's kind of peaks and troughs, there's plenty to love still, but there are more frequent weak bits, as well as more divisive stuff than in previous series. Personally I still really like 7 and 8 for the most part, and probably even like 9 more than most

Lizbeth Marcs

I...really like the Mini and that kicked off the Dave era. I feel so alone in that, so it's nice to see someone else who says they like it, too. I also really like Series 8, so I'm preparing to get tomatoes thrown at me when they start that series. Series 7 is really the only one I'm mixed about. It has a couple of highs, but some real lows.

Lizbeth Marcs

I think the issue with Series 7 is that they try to spread Rimmer's antagonistic role around by giving each character a piece of Rimmer's negative qualities. Except it doesn't quite work because I don't think Doug is willing to go as far as making the any characters left out-and-out unlikeable like he and Rob were willing to do with Rimmer (I think it's a case of them trusting Chris Barrie to turn around and make Rimmer at least sympathetic, if not in the same episode, then at least in the next one). I think THAT'S where Series 7 suffers more than anything else.

MCT

I've not seen Promised Land yet, but S9 is still my least favourite of everything I've seen, but it does have stuff going for it. If the show had ended on 9 I'd probably think worse of it, but as a lead in to later series I do like it. And yeah the mini is adorable. 🙂

GillyBean

without spoilers, i think people dont like these series as much because they are misogynists (the viewers not the show aha). I think it may be that simple. and maybe also just because the older ones have a stronger nostalgic effect to some. but i think the writing in this and the next one are magnificent.

Troy Convers

The monstrosity that has been retroactively labelled 'Series 9' is alway a miss for me on a rewatch, where recent rewatched of S7 make me think it was ahead of it's time, now that The Orville is a hit. Nowt wrong with a bit of character growth and actual dialogue.

Lizbeth Marcs

Me woman. Me not fond of Series 7 and prefer Series 8. *looks sternly to camera* Although my dislike is around the writing, and the writing for the characters.

Troy Convers

What Rimmerisms did the three inherit? I just think that [REDACTED] just bought out different reactions in them, which is something that happens IRL.

Troy Convers

I think you've hit the nail on the head. It's will be very interesting to get the Gals reactions on [REDACTED].

Ann & Alex Taylor

I think you'll like 6 of the 8 episodes in this series. It is more character driven, which series 1 and 2 were as well. So in some ways this has some of the feel of the early years.

Lizbeth Marcs

Series 7 really does start off very strong. Tikka to Ride and Stoke Me a Clipper really got my hopes up because I looooooved them. There's one more I really love in this series, but the rest of the episodes are kind of a mixed bag. By the way, there's another lost episode in this series that centers around Cat. Similar to the "Body Snatcher" episode, it's an animatic with Chris Barrie doing all the voices. I highly recommend it because it's a really good one, and it's a shame it never got produced (due to cost reasons). It would fit in right before this episode. The reason why Stoke Me a Clipper was so emotional is because this was supposed to be Chris Barrie's (and Rimmer's) swan song. At the end of Series 6, he was so burnt out that he wanted out. However, he didn't want to burn bridges, so he was willing to come back for Series 7 to see Rimmer off and leave the door open for Rimmer to return for the (never-to-be-produced) theatrical movie. Turns out the 4-year break softened his attitude down to "never say never", so Stoke Me a Clipper wound up being a temporary leave of absence for the actor (you'll see why there's some debate over the character as you get into the later series).

Lizbeth Marcs

Me, too, Sue. Me, too. I admit I didn't like it until I got to the third episode and went, "OH! THAT'S WHAT THEY'RE DOING!" My opinion then turned right around before the episode ended and then I went back and rewatched.

PickettsChargingPort

There's nothing wrong with season 7. Different, certainly, but fresh in many ways. You've seen a spoiler as to why, but I won't elaborate. Different is not bad.

Lizbeth Marcs

I'm trying to avoid spoilers....so maybe in future episodes? But I'm one of those that really liked the addition of [REDACTED], which is why people are surprised that I'm not fond of Series 7 as a whole.

Lizbeth Marcs

Uh, I really like [REDACTED] but overall am not a fan of Series 7. I agree in certain quarters misogyny comes into play, but you can dislike this series for other reasons.

D. J. Toland

I think some people don't care as much for Series 7 because it's markedly different. This was the first series that was written by Doug Naylor on his own, and there are a lot of changes happening: it's shot very film-like and feels a little less sitcom-y as a result, and there's more pathos and drama being fit into all the comedy (which, for me, hearkens back to series 1, which had an incredible feeling of sadness under all the comedy). The cast changes certainly don't help, and as has been mentioned, a not-zero number of people don't like there being a woman on what has to this point been a very laddish show. I really like a lot of the series, and I admire them for stretching beyond what they've been safely doing for six seasons.

D. J. Toland

I just saw Series 9 for the first time last night and enjoyed it for what it was. I've always really liked 8 and have never been able to understand the antipathy towards it. Graham McTavish alone is reason to love it.

Paul Flux

And Sydney Newman in An Adventure In Space And Time

Rob G

Really enjoyed watching you both laugh so much at the opening sequence, it is an absolute classic lol. This one is another favourite of mine and it really hit the feels seeing that planet at the end when I first saw it which was was reflected in your reactions as well. Thanks!

Paul Flux

I remember really liking the return of Red Dwarf with this season when it first aired. These first two episodes are definitely the strongest, but I remember it as a welcome return, with a better budget. Chris Barrie's exit was a bit disappointing, but understandable given his workload at the time.

PickettsChargingPort

Hmm. I can't think of a way to answer that without possibly spoiling a few things.

PickettsChargingPort

Ok, people have already spoiled it. The cast is a major change, though I don't think it's a negative change. When season 7 came out and i read about the change, I was quite apprehensive. However, I think the change worked quite well and really gave the show a fresh feel. Edit: I do think the next episode in specific has a few cringy missteps.

Neil P

remake of Ghost Busters

MCT

I think there has been that to some extent, particularly at first, but there are loads of other reasons, pretty much all of which involve spoilers for the moment.

Owlcatcher

I think you are just reaching way too far for no good reason. It's just that that show had a certain cast for many series and then it changed. It's as simple as that, there's no need to force some weird angles here.

GillyBean

Interesting that you’d think that’s a forced weird angle I have heard some people say things that enforce my point even if it doesn’t align with your view. But I agree, it’s not the only reason, there’s just some very vocal people for which that is the reason.

Owlcatcher

Well see I base this mainly on my personal experience. In this country here we have this fan-organized con every year and I've never met anyone who would even remotely express anything towards that angle. Really mostly people who didn't kike series 7 talked about the vibe of the show changing regardless of [REDACTED]. I mean I guess it's a bit of heavily localized sample I'm considering, sure, but still

GillyBean

It’s more so the internet people, internet is full of awful opinions 😔 But I’m glad to hear it’s not the case for people you’ve met in person, means you know decent people ❤️ Is that con in the uk? I may need to research and go if it’s near me 👀

Chris Neumann

The stunt coordinator on this episode was Nick Gillard, who did the stunts for the Star Wars prequels. And one of the James Bond movies.

Chris Neumann

I really do hope you get around to Blackadder, it's pretty much Red Dwarf in the past (or is Red Dwarf Blackadder in the future?). This episode made me think of the show for reasons i won't go into for spoiler reasons, but I think you'd have fun with that too.

Sebastian Bodine

Series VII is heavily front-loaded. For me, best episodes are the first three and then you begin to miss Rob's contributions to the writing, but it does finish strong. Plus, Phil Collins is a legend!

Owlcatcher

Actually it's in Prague and has been going since 2003-ish? I haven't been to the latest ones but I think there was one like a month ago. But you have to imagine a really small fan-ran event where you like rent a high school gym. Like that sort of size of an event XD So really a very small local event with like couple hundred people showing up but in a way it's a representation of the most hardcore fans I guess.

GillyBean

Aww that sounds super nice! You’re lucky to have that :)

John Veitch

The Red Dwarf "Smegazine" did a few comic strips about the adventures of Ace Rimmer, travelling between realities (and into different genres).

Owlcatcher

I think these days I'm a bit too old to attend XD But yeah, it's a pretty chill local community event. A lot of cosplay and fun stuff like some uni engineering students constructing actual wireless-controlled Skutters and stuff like that. So yeah, I said it was a bit of a reach because of my personal experience but that really is what it is. Just my personal experience.

Skyrous

IRL Chris Barrie was starring in another sitcom called "Brittas Empire" which is also wickedly funny highly recommended. He just didn't want have to do 2 series. So they gave him a proper send off. Don't worry he isn't gone forever. But now there is a opening in crew which will be addressed next week.

MCT

For me, the outgoing change was a negative change, though completely unavoidable of course, and it was handled beautifully in this episode. The incoming change was broadly positive imo.

David Tully

I do remember being very sad when Chris Barrie decided to leave Red Dwarf (I think I was only 10 at the time). I was too young to watch the first 6 series when they went out but I caught up on them on video. I was, therefore, really looking forward to when RD came back in 1997 and was shocked by how Rimmer left! In hindsight, I thought it was an appropriate send-off for that character. Kudos to Paul Alexander for co-writing this one with Doug and for Ed Bye's inspired idea with the crocodile surfing! I do think Barrie's departure does contribute to why people feel less affinity to S7 though.

PickettsChargingPort

I think that's exactly the right way to say it. Outgoing was negative, incoming was positive.

Paflad

Not ever having been heavily involved in 'fandom' for this or any other show; because I was a broken person for whom admitting enthusiasm for anything to anybody was toe curlingly embarrassing and utterly out of the question, even if I knew for fact that they liked the same thing; I had only the vaguest of ideas of what other people thought of the changes this season (although boy have I learned about it since) but I can say that I personally got over it very quickly. Possibly, in hindsight, because teenage boy. I'm not proud.

James Wilson

I think part of the hate relates to the CGI used instead of the models. And I would say the downturn in writing starts after the next episode as well. That said, I still like it. Its all worth watching.

hrcaffee

for what it's worth on your question about series 7 and liking things, the other nugget that I cherish so much along with this ep's opening is yet to come in a few episodes, so buckle up 😉

hrcaffee

but wait, maybe you've watched it already 😄 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

David Shadwell

This is a classic and shows Doug at his best at balancing laughs, drama and emotion. I do think it tails off slightly from here on but it was a high bar to maintain. I think (and remember 'Memory cheats') that the laughs/jokes didn't land so well and the time and budgetary constraints feel more pronounced. I do feel that the first two eps saw a healthy chunk of the budget and then the other 6 suffer a tad in comparison. And it is completely understandable that the writing would change and take time to settle with this upcoming change. But it was a breath of fresh air as you couldn't just do a rehash of Series 6 without it starting to feel stale. So Series 7 is around series 3/4 level for me, good but not great with a fair number of average fillers that still have their moments.

Travis Boyle

I laughed a lot at the singing at the start before the reaction. Great stuff. Fun seeing how much joy the first two episodes of the Series gave you Gals. Lister and Rimmer's hug always gets me too. I personally like Series 7. 8 as well. It is just different which I appreciate. Sure every episode might not be a classic but at least they went for it. Hope you enjoy the next episode.

Mark Ten

Welp... Im back as a Patreon. Had a big scare but Im mostly recovered now. BTW, did the Gallifrey Gals ever update the mailing address, I have something I think you'll like

Travis Boyle

Glad you are well. Yes they have a new address on the YouTube channel description.

Katrine Myra

I don't think that's at all accurate. Most of the fans I know are women, and many of the gripes they have with series VII are based precisely in their perspective as women. Not all, but, well. There are some issues.

Katrine Myra

I want to share something a friend of mine made me aware of, which has really changed the way I look at this episode. When I first watched it, I reacted much as you did. Lister obviously cares for Rimmer, and I felt that his actions here were considerate and loving... However, my friend (who is very much a Rimmer person, much like I am a Lister), pointed out that what Lister is doing here, effectively takes away Rimmer's choice. Lister forces Rimmer's hand. And yes, he does so out of love, and because he realizes that Rimmer probably won't go through with it unless Lister interferes - but is he right to do so? After all, if Rimmer's natural inclination would be to refuse, why shouldn't he be allowed to do that? Lister, of all people, should see the problem with going along with something just because it's what everyone else has done. "Are you going to be the one to break the chain?" Well... why not? The other thing, which is not insignificant IMO, is that Rimmer would be likely to see all of this as Lister being eager to get rid of him. It is, in a way, a rejection of Rimmer, effectively pushing him out. All that said... that look Lister gives Rimmer as he leaves...! I'll see myself out. (Thank you for listening to my TED-talk.)

Darryl Glynn

I had the first 3 seasons on VHS. I was in the military, I had a single man room, and would watch them over and over. This is why I thought season 3 was the best. I never bought the later seasons on VHS, but did watch them when they came on TV (We didn't have streaming services or cable TV. We were very limited on channels). But now, watching them again with you girls, has made these episodes so much better! I had forgotten them, and maybe this had smegged up my opinions of them in the past. So much more enjoyable now. Thanks ladies.

Ann & Alex Taylor

Sarah Alexander also starred in the sitcom "Coupling". Which was written by Stephen Moffat (of Doctor Who fame). It's basically the Brit version of Friends. The gals might like to try it at some point.

Troy Convers

The subject comes up later...

Frank Murphy

God dam it gets Me emotional every dam time

Chris K

And the Arnold Rimmer of Series 1-7 never returned!
