Red Dwarf | Duct Soup S7 Ep 4 | Gallifrey Gals Get Dwarfed

Always loved this episode although it's always ranked fairly low in polls, I like the almost bottle episode nature of it - and usually love a bottle episode, it's like theatre

Kieran B

It might be worth checking out the 'Xtended' versions when you go back to it yourselves (there's only Tikka to Ride, Ouroboros and Duct Soup are). but you're not missing a huge amount. Would love to see you reactions to some of the early episodes again after you've finished all of these (not that I'm actually expecting you to do that), just to see how you perceive it now compared to then

Troy Convers

One of my favourite eps for character growth and throughlines. Lister's vulnerabilities, Kryten acting like the jealous mother because of his PTSD with losing people and Chloe Annett nailing the Kochanski role in a way I doubt a one trick pony like Grogan could ever have done.

Troy Convers

I'm going to say something a bit controversial - having Rimmer not on the show is refreshing. He could be a bit much and too many episodes were centered around him. With Kochanski, we have a 'Straight Man' in comedy terms, the Zeppo to Graucho, Harpo & Chico, the 'normie' who is more like us, like someone we'd meet in real life and probably get on with and most importantly, someone who is a foil for Lister, just in a completely different way from Rimmer.

Kieran B

A very apt analogy with the episode title

Troy Convers

It's like the TNG ep Family. A character ep in a sci fi setting where you learn more about established characters or flesh out new ones.

Troy Convers

Alludements to Lister being bisexual? Eh, that'll never be bought up again....

Troy Convers

It's never explained why Cat of all people would do such a selfless act as give Kochanski his coat.

Kieran B

Absolutely, I love the character development in this

Travis Boyle

Actually didn't mind this episode overall. It was a replacement for a different episode that would of been too expensive to make. It was called "Identity Within". They have it with animation and Chris Barrie narration like the other Lost episode you Gals covered. Can't wait for the reaction to the next episode. Probably one of my favorites of Series 7. This series gets a lot of flack but I personally enjoyed it. Guess it is hard losing Rimmer.

Paul Flux

Yes, can confirm that there are some men who like baths too! And also that Michelle Yeo should have won an Oscar for EEAAO! Superb film.

Troy Convers

Michelle Yeo, easily the best part of Star Trek Discovery, well, after Doug Jones.

This episode has never been a hugely popular one among fans, but rewatching it now, I think it’s actually pretty good. Was filmed last, and (like Out of Time last season) had to be done on the cheap, with no guest cast or new sets. I think the writing of Kochanski does dip into stereotypes and can make you wince a bit at times, but Chloe Annette’s performance is always great, and she has really good chemistry with the rest of the cast.

Lizbeth Marcs

This one is not my favorite. I don't hate it, but I'm kind of meh on this one. I always felt the revelation for Lister's claustrophobia revelation came out of nowhere. I give Doug Naylor credit for acknowledging that it came out of nowhere using the dialog, but I don't think it comes up again (there's a Series 12 ep I need to rewatch in order to be sure). Also — Didn't love the acting in this, either. Chloe Arnette is really the only one I was okay with acting-wise. The other cast members felt off-their-game. It could be because this was the last episode shot for the series and they were all just tired, which I think is mentioned in the DVD commentary for this episode. Plus, all of the actors mention in the commentary that filming for this episode was just ROUGH — really uncomfortable between the tight spaces, the need to crawl around on hands and knees, and the fact they got soaked by cold water. Also, based on the DVD commentary for this episode, Danny John-Jules still feels some kind of way (read: annoyed) over the fact that "Duct Soup" was a last-minute replacement for what was supposed to be a Cat-centric episode ("Identity Within" was scrapped due to budgetary restraints — but there is an animatic of the whole episode in the DVD extras), so I wonder if that affected his less-than-stellar performance in this episode. I think I'm also not a fan of this episode because of Kryten's continuous downward spiral as a character — I mean to the point of potentially endangering the entire crew? I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around that characterization. There's being merely petty (which would have been hilarious if they stuck with that) and there's whatever this over-the-top nonsense this is. I really feel for the Kryten fans when it comes to Series 7, because *woof*. Okay, I had more to say on this episode than I thought I did...

Troy Convers

Lister's claustrophobia is mentioned before in the series, can't remember the ep in question off the top of my head.

pbaker

Before I line up the dvd is this xtended or regular? Cheers!

Cedric Bombs

I quite like this episode, I think Kochanski fits in well I always found it weird how much they changed Kochanski's character and made her more uptight and posh - I just don't see her as Lister's type

Troy Convers

Annett has such a great facial expression range (the face scrunch is so cute!), reminiscent of Adrienne Palicki in The Orville, who could say so much with subtle expression changes.

Travis Boyle

I thought she did win the Oscar.

Travis Boyle

Didn't mind the Kryten personality thing if it ended after Series 7 Episode 6.

Jonathan

It's interesting how the gendered stuff has actually dated a lot worse than the gay stuff, which they were decently progressive on for 1997.

tal goren

It funny how you noticed the retcon in regard to Lister and Kochanski relationship, but never said anything about starbug now being a large, well stocked vessel when in "marooned" it was a one-room shuttle with no supplies.

Rob G

This wasn’t a favourite of mine when I first saw it, mainly because I thought it was boring. Upon rewatching it again I still felt the same way although I did think it was better than my initial impression. So I did have some trepidation going into this one but have to say your reactions made it pretty enjoyable tbh. There are actually a bunch of good jokes in this one on reflection and seeing you both laugh at them has elevated my opinion of this episode. Cheers 😊

Ross Nolan

I like this one more now than I did in 1997 strangely enough (I think 15 year old me was less interested in conversation episodes than present me.) I really like Chloe Annett's version of Kochanski even if I admit some of the gendering is dated.

Mab7373822

The gender stereotyping is really poor this season. Its annoying because we've had female characters - Hattie Hayridge's Holly was brilliant and her being female didn't invite this type of writing. Neither did the parallel universe female Lister and Rimmer back in Parallel Universe. Neither did the brilliant Nirvana Crane in Holoship. The original Kochanski also didn't have any of this either. Sometimes it feels like "ha ha she's a girl!" is a very broad theme this season, in a crude way that the show hadn't previously sunk to. That being said, I don't think I've re-watched this episode in a decade, and its better than I remember. The conversations in the ducts were actually quite good, and its nice to see more of Cat this episode. Still not a fan of Kryten's personality shift. While there is a story there - abandonment, mechanoid PTSD, etc - I felt it could have been told better. Not trying to be a downer by the way. Great reaction, and there are some episodes coming up this season that I actually really like.

Mark Ten

Still, at some moments I miss the little smeg!

pbaker

Thankyou! Great reaction. I was so hyped for this series that we stopped a student party half way through to watch it. I was sold 100% on first viewing and became less enthusiastic as time went on.

James Fleischman

Thanks for going back to the original cuts. Much easier to sync.

Rob G

Can anyone tell me how a woman should be written when the male characters are out and out sexist losers? Introduce a female character into the series and the trope of being neurotic suddenly is a thing?

Travis Boyle

Forgot to mention the great opening before the show. Twisted headphones cord to Jeopardy to fake judge shows. Fun stuff. And the closing was good too. And I think Michelle Yeoh won the Oscar for that movie. They are using it to hype up her Star Trek Section 31 film coming out sometime in the future. Apparently a young Rachel Garrett is a character in the movie. Thought I would tell you since you Gals love Yesterday's Enterprise so much.

Katrine Myra

Agreed on the latter point. While we arguably don't see much of Kochanski before this series, what we do see doesn't fit with this.

Kieran B

True, but that was explained in Tikka to Ride

Kieran B

My head canon is that Lister’s tinkering in Tikka to Ride made Kryten pre-disposed to the paranoia etc

Raven Stromdans

This episode hits a bit different upon rewatch in coordination with the reaction. I still think the writing has taken a hit, particularly with the curious characterization choices and shifts in this season. It's worth noting that regardless of which version of Kochanski we take into account, either the original "never got up the nerve to ask her out" or the retconned "relationship that didn't work out", it's kinda clear that Lister was never meant to end up with her and the differences between their lives/personalities was going to result in that. If nothing else, it seems as though the transdimensional/timey-wimey escapades of the Dwarfers at the very least resulted in Lister losing his chance to end up as "five years in the future" Lister who ended up actually married to the original Kochanski. I do find myself wondering if the plausible explanation for Kryten's sudden onset of codependent neurosis is either a direct result of Lister helping him break his programming to become more human...or if Kryten is still working off the head Lister fiddled with in Tikka To Ride, to say nothing of the number of times Kryten has been otherwise damaged and even requiring being rebuilt. But I could sit here all day coming up for justifications that literally just writing choices. The episode itself is fine, in so far as Series VII fare goes and has its amusing and insightful moments. And I agree that at least part of Kochanski's new characterization is meant to parallel the antagonism between Lister and Rimmer, only with a radically different dynamic. Keep Calm and Smeg On, Gallifrey Gals! Mr. Flibble and I are going to go make some kipper jerky in the heat of these ducts until the next episode.

Ann & Alex Taylor

I think that might be the first episode since season 3's "Marooned" that only featured the regular cast. A rarity in the later seasons.

Ann & Alex Taylor

About the retcon in Lister and Koshanaki's back story: Round about season 3, Rob Grant and Doug Naylor co-wrote some novels which re-tell the events of the early years, including several chapters which take place before the pilot. It was in those novels that they ret-conned Lister and Koshanski to have had a brief relationship. The later series of the show appear to follow the backstory of the novels. Either Rob and Doug preferred it, or they just forgot which was which! The novels are seriously worth reading, as they add a lot to the characterisation of the regulars. They are: Red Dwarf: Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers Red Dwarf: Better Than Life There are also some later novels written by separately by Rob and Doug after their split. Opinions on those ones are mixed.

Ross Nolan

I also find it amusing you call Chloe Annett's Kochanski 'Fake Kochanski' when two of Clare Grogan's biggest appearances in the series have her playing a different character pretending to be Kochanski. Way back in 'Balance of Power' she played Rimmer with Kochanski's voice and appearance ("I'm having a woman's period") and in 'Psirens' she played a Psiren masquerading as Kochanski.

Dieter Maggs

I like to think that the whole Lister dated Kochanski retcon was caused by the episode Timeslides in series 3. It didn't seem like much was changed by the end of the episode except Rimmer being alive again. I don't believe Kochanski is mentioned again until a few episodes later (DNA in series 4) where Lister mentions being in an actual relationship with Kochanski for the first time which none of the others correct him on, seemingly knowing about it already. So I think whatever Rimmer did in Timeslides altered the past in a way that had Lister and Kochanski date.

Travis Boyle

I used to use Timeslides as well. Now sometimes I say all the retcons were caused by the epic multiverse, wibbly wobbly, time, and space altering events of Series 9. Lol

tal goren

it got bigger after the paradox, but it was already large enough for long-term travel during season 6

tal goren

I actually watch the reactions with the extended cut so I could compare them and the part that were cut were... not very good. the gals definitely made the right choice here.

tal goren

it did featured to GELF in Kryten's fantasy sequence

Katrine Myra

I love both Last Human and Backwards, each in their own way, though Last Human has a special place in my heart.

David Shadwell

This one has always left me feeling a bit 'meh' and I'm not sure why. Seeing as it was a last minute replacement, it fits well within the structure of the season. It does a good job of settling in the Kochanski character and giving her screen time so we get to know her a bit better. There is enough here to show she is not a straight Rimmer replacement and is her own character. The jokes are relatively funny (though not as funny - IMO - as the first two eps. Something just feels..... off. The pacing feels out in places. While this is a slower ep, there are lots of silent pauses and filler shots of them crawling around that make it drag. Craig's performance seems off, as already mentioned, and some of his delivery seems like 1st takes. For the most part Kryten's scenes work, certainly when Lister is trying to reassure him and the scene between him and Kochanski at the start. But the character is starting to grate by the end of the ep. I like the balance between pathos and humour that has returned this series but the laughs felt slightly 2nd place in this one. Generally, I put this down to the changing dynamic of the show and the writer(s) trying to get the balance right. I've generally felt that the show (since S3 anyway) has been a bit like the Wizard of Oz. You have Rimmer trying to find his courage (to be the person Ace showed he could be), Kryten in search of a heart (or to be more human) and Cat in search of a brain (well, he would be if he thought it was worth it but he has search a beautiful arse so what else does anyone need?). The Lister is the Dorothy figure, are main point of reference, who brings balance to it all. Lister usually brings the moral compass to the show and will be brave when when there are no further alternatives. He is no Ace Rimmer but will come good when push comes to shove. He allows Holly to diddle with his DNA to try and defeat the Curry Monster, faces down the Inquisitor with a desperate plan once there are no further alternatives, stands up to Hudzen to defend Kryten even though his fear is obvious and won't abandon Rimmer to the Despicable One. And Kryten was the brains who pulled knowledge out of nowhere when needed. Kochanski adds both emotional intelligence and intellectual intelligence to the show, as seen with her efforts to distract Lister in this ep. So that balance is lost slightly in that some of Rimmer's traits are given to Kryten and Lister who have behaved like right dicks so far this season. I think it just took time for the balance to be found so we don't get Kryten aas walking exposition and resolver (like in VI) but Lister doesn't lose his heart as we have seen at times in VII.

Katrine Myra

Y'know, I was very curious to see what you'd think of Kochanski in this series. After two episodes, I'm amused (and a little delighted) to see your take is more or less like my own. "Fake Kochanski" made me laugh out loud - especially with Paula's delivery. More seriously, I understand what they were going for, but as I mentioned in my comment on Ouroboros, it just doesn't work as intended. The key word to describe series VII, in my opinion, is "uneven". You start off with two superb episodes, Tikka to Ride being arguably one of the best episodes of RD, period, and then there's... there's others. Duct Soup isn't the worst, though. There are some legitimately great moments, like Kochanski basically distracting Lister with his own, internalized homophobia (I cannot believe this is the first time I noticed her calling Lister "hetero boy"....!), and some really strong attempts at fleshing out her character and making her relatable. Unfortunately, you then have moments where she comes off as more of a stereotype of a woman than a real person. It's as though I can see Naylor going "quick - what do women like? Shopping? Cottage cheese? Clothes? Scented baths??" Chloë Annett nails the performance; it's the writing that's the problem. I actually really liked Cat's hearing being a thing, rather than his sense of smell, as cats do have great hearing. But yeah, they do play fast and lose with canon. Which I don't mind as much, in a show with time travel and alternate dimensions, but the characterization is doing some interesting things this series, too. They've made Lister more... toxically masculine, to coin a phrase, which really irks me, and while Kryten's paranoid jealousy is played quite well in this particular episode... yeah. There is better to come, however! *Rimmer salute*
