Don't care what anyone says. Best episode so far 👌. Someone somewhere should make a real Rimmerworld ride at a theme park. Would make fortunes!

In UK Fahrenheit is still sometimes used for emphasis of how hot it is. A newspaper on a hot day might quote the F because it sound really dramatic - Even though only the older people understand it and it means nothing to the young ones.

re last episode and temperature scales. while the change to celsius in the UK had started as early in the 1960s, by the 1990s it was still not nearly as universal as it is now, three more decades years later.

If you do feel the need to iron a bra, don't wear the "container" over your head.

This is a great episode, absolute classic, that said ‘My Dave would have been better’ theme just doesn’t work, there really is no need for it. At the end though it turned out to be really good and you can see Chloe enjoying herself, I think her enjoyment bumps this episode up a notch tbh.

But they're not ignoring Kryten's personality; he's the overprotective mother hen fretting that Kochanski is whisking Lister away, so it makes complete sense. He has abandonment issues because of the Nova 5.

Troy Convers

As for your hypothesis about the last three episodes: nope. Way off. Next one is a standalone classic and the last two are pure Sci-Fi mindfuckery.

The Rimmer Experience is just so inspired as an idea (Lister's white teeth and make up are so funny!) and yes, that song gets stuck in your head for days. As an aside, Chris Barrie filmed all of his post-sendoff scenes at the time that he filmed all of his S7 footage, so they had proper closure on his character.

Bruce Bromley

Great episode. It's just a shame that it isn't Chris Barrie doing the singing. It's Howard Goodall, the music composer.

The Rimmer Experience really is the highlight of this episode and the premise that Lister became just so used to having Rimmer around, that his absence felt like a loss in his life. I'm coming to the conclusion that while I don't particularly like how they characterized Kochanski as a result of the retcon, Kat and Paula are right that what really hurts these episodes from a writing standpoint is the sour dynamic between Kryten and Kris. I don't know that I agree that making the contention between Cat and Kochanski would have been a better way to go, but I do agree that having this sort of nonsensical contention hurts the rest of the episode. Really, I don't feel there was a good need for it at all, as there's already existing contention between Lister...and himself, or more precisely the version of him from Kochanski's reality. Honestly, I think playing up that dichotomy, with Cat and Kryten getting on Lister's case for constantly trying to change himself (rather than actively better himself) to be more like Kochanski's Lister might have made for better writing. Anyway, I'm glad to see you're both still enjoying the show. Looking forward to your takes on the next few episodes before we get to Series VIII! Keep Calm and Smeg On, Gallifrey Gals! In the mean time, Mr. Flibble and I will be smoking a kipper...using the Rimmer Experience Marionettes as kindling for our fire!

Have been looking forward to this one. Got to hear Chris singing a half-remembered version of this at the Red Dwarf convention. 24 years ago. Bloody hell.

The 'Mother Hen Kryten' dynamic reaches it's Zenith next ep, and cleverly resolved. I said supper is ready!

Here Paula and Kat - for your added torture - are the lyrics to The Rimmer Munchkin Song If you're in trouble, he will save the day He's brave and he's fearless, come what may Without him, the mission would go astray He's Arnold, Arnold, Arnold Rimmer Without him, life would be much grimmer He's handsome, trim, and no one's slimmer He will never need a Zimmer He's Arnold, Arnold, Arnold Rimmer More reliable than a garden Strimmer He's never been mistaken for Yul Brynner He's not bald and his head doesn't glimmer Master of the wit and the repartee His command of space directives is uncanny How come he's such a genius? Don't ask me Ask Arnold, Arnold, Arnold Rimmer He's also a fantastic swimmer And if you play your cards right, then he just might come round for dinner Xtended version only ⬇️ He's Arnold, Arnold, Arnold Rimmer No rhymes left now apart from quimmer We hope they fade us out before we get to schwimmer Fade out you stupid plimmer

Troy Convers

There's something very Gilbert & Sullivan about that song. Yes, I took are an Opera fan, thanks to Star Trek! 😄

The kiss that inspired a million fanfics! I really like this one but I have to agree Kryten's attitude is getting very grating especially since it comes across as so one-sided as to be basically bullying.

Cutting out all the horrible Kryten bits, this is a great episode and hugely memorable. The terrible writing of Kryten doesn't last long, thankfully. It has aged really poorly. Its interesting that we are now five episodes into Doug Naylor's solo interpretation of Red Dwarf, and while he will produce some amazing episodes (particularly later on, after this lull), its certainly not anywhere as streamlined and brilliantly written as the two writers - Rob Grant and Doug Naylor - working together. They were absolute gold. You guys are spot on that the new character dynamics could have been a really interesting opportunity to do something new with Cat - who feels more sidelined than ever in this particular season. Really glad you are enjoying it still and persevering. The quality of the show - in my view - will eventually improve considerably from Season 7.

Jonathan

What I love about the Rimmer Experience is how they actually make it seem like a badly programmed video game. The super white teeth, blank expressions, wooden delivery and the incredibly jerky movement of the ride could be straight out of a Bioware title.

If you can understand this emoticon, I salute you.

This episode is the reason I never understood the way everyone rushed to buy toilet paper when we first went into lockdown. It's amazing how far a roll can go when you use the Rimmer method

I think I possibly know the answer to the temp measurements. it wasn’t until January 1st 1961 that the UK meteorological office officially adopted Celsius as the official measurement for temperature, Doug Naylor was born in 1955 so he would have grown up hearing his parents use Fahrenheit and probably got accustomed to using Fahrenheit by the time everywhere finally switched to Celsius and being 42 writing a script it wouldn’t have occurred to him, maybe. So Either that or it’s science fiction where things don’t have to make sense lol.

Geraint Harrison

also there’s a saying< “love you lots like jelly tots” that’s what the packaging is referring too lol

Jack Rogers

In my mind, I think the reason Cat is not the one with the rivalry, is Cat is so into himself, he can't see her as a threat. Remember when they meet the GELF that turns into their perfect mate and his is just himself. I think in his mind, there is no competition, because no one can come close to himself.

Chris Devlin

Kryten's writing this season, especially around Kockhanski was never something I was a fan of. It does get better but it's a definite low point for the character I feel. Aside from that this is a great episode and the song is one of my favourite moments in all of Red Dwarf.

Aaron Funnell

This series is among the weaker series of Red Dwarf but it still stands as a good demonstration of how the show doesn't stand still. The safest and easiest thing for Doug Naylor to do would be to just do another run in the vein of series VI. Instead he chose to change how the show was shot and stop shooting in front of a live audience, introduce more dramatic moments and add in a female main character. Ambition that doesn't quite work out fully is more interesting than playing it safe. Red Dwarf as a show never plays it safe. It's always trying to evolve.

TuneIntoSanityFM

I was fed up with series 7 Kryten by the second "You'ree lyingg!" By the way, the fahrenheit thing (As well as being for a US audience) might also be because they imagined many cultures would have merged by Lister's time. The currency is DollarPounds, the second language is Esperanto etc!

Nolan

Maybe they never changed Spare Head 2 back with Kryten's head Head, and he's still missing his ethical subroutines, so maybe that;s were all this Kochanski issue is coming from...

Troy Convers

It does get explained and resolved next ep though.

Apart from one or two gags and the Munchkin Song, this feels like one of the weakest eps in Red Dwarf so far - but still better than Backwards. It feels very samey to Duct Soup and so drags for me, there is not much of a coherent thread that pulls the whole thing together. Kochanski suddenly has an opportunity to return home - that is pulled from nowhere. You have the 3-4 minute scene where Lister is a prick - again - and sabotages it. It ends and is not mentioned again. There is a coherent story here but it doesn't quite get there for me. Feels like a succession of scenes with jokes that needed more tightening up. Also Kryten is getting unbearable now. The conflict is too much and isn't even necessary. There is already conflict here. Kochanski and Lister's relationship isn't exactly smooth sailing and is rocky at best. Sure, Kris means well and does help out with the emotional baggage but their is that natural conflict as she tries to fit into a world she cannot stand and doesn't understand. There is the conflict. It's there with Games Night, with how she runs things on her ship, with how she compares them to her crew. It should be there with Cat and Kyten in little doses over those little things that grate whenever a new dynamic is introduced into a group of friends. Then we see those whittled away as the character grows and settles into life on Starbug. The constant hammering by Kyrten is so, so tiring now and stopped being even remotely amusing an episode and a half ago. Red Dwarf is primarily a comedy and that has dipped in the 2/3 eps for me. I love the pathos that Red Dwarf brings to it's stories but the balance feels out and clumsy at the moment. The shift of the antagonistic character from Rimmer to Kyrten is jarring as with Rimmer, there was sympathy for how he turned out. Sure you hated him from time to time but you knew the shit he had gone through to be that way. Kryten is now dick because the writing says he is so he loses that sympathy. The jealousy and abandonment angle only goes so far to excuse him and, personally, that point was passed last ep.

Lizbeth Marcs

I give Doug Naylor a lot of credit for trying something new with the series, even if it doesn't entirely work out. Series 7 is kind of a slog for me on my re-watches because while there are parts I like, the whole is kind of left wanting in my eyes.

Travis Boyle

Kryten's personality foibles would of been alright if it stopped after what happens next episode. But it continues on in episode 7 as well.

Katrine Myra

I LOVE the idea of Cat and Kochanski butting heads instead of Kryten and Kochanski! It makes so much more sense. Others (and I myself in comments on previous episodes) have mentioned how the dynamic with Kochanski and the rest of the crew doesn't quite work, and we really just see more of it here. The Opera Game joke is actually quite funny, but in context and for the character it's just... odd. I do think it highlights an issue: The Opera Game joke works because the humor lies in Kochanski's interests being so different to those of the others that they struggle to even understand what they are. This is what Rimmer provided and which is now missing; the comedy that comes from an odd couple dynamic... however, the power dynamic is different. Kochanski genuinely is better educated, more experienced and has better social skills than the others. She doesn't fit into a Rimmer-shaped hole. And on that note...! While this episode most certainly is not the reason why people ship Rimmer and Lister, it certainly is a treat for fans of both characters and their dynamic. The kiss is the least interesting thing about it; what I love about Blue is how we explore, perhaps for the first time, Rimmer and Lister's relationship to one another. Lister talking about his feelings, and how he genuinely misses Rimmer actually feels very authentic to me, when it so easily could have been made into a "lol, having feelings is girly" joke. That said, I agree that the kiss is quite sweet in how Chris and Craig were so cool about it, but what we get in the episode is nothing compared to what they actually filmed. (What is informally known as "the extended kiss" in fandom.) When straight male actors kiss on screen in a comedy, there will usually be a lot of exaggeration and some toxic masculinity involved, but here it's quite the opposite. I would LOVE to see y'all react to it! Well, I'm late to the party as usual, so I'm going to head right over to the Beyond a Joke reaction. Toodle Pipski!

Frank Murphy

The rimmer song is a massive ear worm!
