I was on board with the episode until "The Twist at the End" which, alas, I hated with the fiery passion of a thousand supernovas. It's not that it was a bad musical number as a musical number, I just didn't think it belonged in an episode of Dr Who. I felt the same about the song in the goblin episode-- and it worries me that we've has gratuitous musical numbers in two out of three episodes of the season. It occurs to me that this is the influence from Disney, and we're liable to see it continue. But, oh well, one can't like everything. It's not the first time since I became a fan that I've felt Dr Who was going wrong. That's never stopped me from being a fan before and it won't stop me now. And after all, I DID like the episode up to that moment. I'm here for the ride, either way. BTW thanks for your tip last episode on downloading your commentary. I tried it this time and it worked like a charm.

Enter the Matrixster

So I have some thoughts. I think Ruby is a descendant of the gods or at least her life was manipulated. All this fourth wall breaking is definitley going somewhere, we've had it in every episode so far. Jinkx is absolutley brilliant, definitley need more. I think wanting a universe of just aeolian music is *just* deranged enough to fit a child of the Toymaker The Doctor and Ruby have perfect chemistary, I'm really getting some 10/Donna vibes, I can believe they are very good friends. I feel we are getting at least one more of The Toymakers legion before The One Who Waits. *EDIT* I also wasn't the biggest fan of that final musical number, I can't get mad at it though, I think Russell was smart putting it at the end so it could be turned off without you really missing any story. Also Harbinger appearing at the end is hinting at another of the Toymakers legion entering the universe, not necessarily The Maestro

The old lady in the window actually knitted Tom Baker's 4th Doctor's scarf. Maestro is one of the scariest villains in Who history and I actually shivered the first time they did a 4th wall break. And that scene that suddenly changes from the devastation of London to the spotlights on the empty stage - wow! I know a lot of the fandom objected to the closing musical number, but I really loved it. Music was bursting forth in the world again. How could it not? B-T-W Murray Gold cameos as the piano player.

Stephen Wray

However Susan Twist wasn't in the number at the end ;)

Stephen Wray

He who waited is giving me he who remains vibes, but wasn't Rory the Man who waited and Amy the girl who waited?

Geraint Harrison

I love that Murray Gold starred as himself in this playing the piano for the musical scene

Obviously, the reason Ruby wasn't erased from existence when the past changed, was the butterfly compensation switch the Doctor turned on last episode.

Geraint Harrison

since the universe got wrecked be the flux and is letting through gods, magic and things previously thought as impossible, we will see some crazy things. The memory of the church last episode changed and became tangible with the snow in both episodes. Maybe we will even get some cross-over Disney things down the line, multiple characters were aware of the fourth wall, even the Doctor. I am loving how RTD has started this new era incorporating the flux and am excited to see where it’s going.

Also I would like to welcome Kat to the club of people who think adults these days have ridiculous birth years.

WastedPo

Maestro was giving me slight Beetlejuice vibes, especially towards the end. Not because their performances are that alike, but more so because they're both chaotic, flamboyant demons.

Eric

"Gratuitous musical numbers." I love it.

Jon Hackett

The chord Paul and John plays sounds like opening chord for A Hard Day's Night

Dan Williams

The old lady, instantly fell in love with that grandma. Glad we got multiple scenes of her, even if she was killed. Great soul.

It was lovely to see Cilla Black - real name Priscilla White - represented here. She was offered her own show on the BBC by Bill Cotton, then assistant head of light entertainment. The show would simply be titled Cilla and aired from January 1968 to April 1976. Some of the lyrics to her signature tune, which became very familiar to us, are below. Something tells me, something's gonna happen tonight I read in the papers that Gemini people will make it tonight Stars will be shining, my sign is aligning with love So come on and make it Let's take everything that we've been dreaming of Oh baby, something tells me, something's gonna happen to you The smile on my face is the smile you'll wear in a moment or two So get it together, you see it's gonna be alright Something tells me, something's gonna happen tonight As for my own favourite Beatles song, Strawberry Fields Forever.

Karl Ward

The old lady who was killed after playing the piano was called June Hudson and she was a Tom Baker era costume designer!

Derek Orr

Ugh no. I am not liking this switch, soft reboot into fantasy and extra silly. Give me powerful speeches from the doctor defending earth and inspiring hope and condemning war, give me weeping angels and time lords and working with UNIT and working with Nixon and Queen Elizabeth and meeting van gogh etc…no more musicals and diaper jokes

Geraint Harrison

Nobody said we aren’t gonna get that stuff.

Josef Schiltz

By the way, Kat and Paula, you are probably very familiar with the tune of the Scouser Liverpool accent by now. Craig Charles for example. How's about challenging you, as actors, to give it a try? Double dare you!
