Crashdown will come back from the dead, reunite with his long lost brother, and seek revenge on the one who killed him. And oh yeah, somewhere along the way he'll get a cool sword. "Baltar. BALTARRRRR!" Starbuck will form a group to go up against him, and one day SHE'LL get the cool sword.

Troy Convers

We're building to a mini crescendo with the next few episodes, but be advised that there are some potentially triggering moments that will make Adama's shooting look like a love tap. There are no filler episodes in S2, and no bottle eps where you can take a breather. This ain't TNG, sister.

Locoturbo

Love the emotion you bring to the reactions, and sorry that it affects you so much! Idea - seasons and half-seasons had breaks back in the day. If you feel overwhelmed and need to take breaks between half seasons, go for it! Just glad you are taking us on this journey!

I'm flashing back to the moment late in S1 when The Gals were praising Tigh for his decision-making abilities, and I was just smirking to myself, waiting for exactly this sequence of events to arrive. I suspect "elltee" was spelled out just to emphasize that it was pronounced that way, rather than an abbreviation of "lieutenant."

Troy Convers

Yep, take breaks, and I mean like in-episode. Just pause the recording and get a gelato.

Troy Convers

Tigh is a good decision maker, when his wife isn't squeezing his yambag.

I'm starting with the fun stuff, from the first edition of the Star Wars movie novelization, Artoo Detoo and See-Threepio's were spelled out the way that I wrote just wrote them. It turns out that it was the novelist's idea, it only lasted for the first two official books then Lucas has made changes. It has stuck around here and there because it's just so darned cute. Jelly Bellies! I'm a Buttered Popcorn girlie! I like Strawberry Shortcake too and I'm sure a whole bunch more that I can't think of at the moment. As for sour, Lemmon and Lime flavors are as far as I'll go. Now, on to BSG. This episode really well named as it's called "Fragged." It's a military term used to describe the act when lower ranked military members who are given an order they disagree with, instead decide to kill the superior officer. It was coined in the jungles on Vietnam in the 1960s because usually explosives were used and the only thing left of both the leader and the evidence was in "fragments." Two things were "Fragged" this episode. Both the Quorum of 12 and Crashdown.

Mike Connaghan

You gals are going to need some medical attention.

Nolan

Yes. The fandom around this point had started calling Ellen "Lady McTigh" Crashdown was also just WAAAY out of his depth. He was too green for command, not ready for the resposibility. And as much as the suvivors saved Crashdowns repuation, it was just as much to save their own necks. They did, in fact, commit mutiny against Crashdown. That's why Tyrol, for all his disatisfaction, shut Baltar down harshly. As we've seen on Galactica, mutiny is not looked favorably upon. Starbuck committed it by going AWOL for the President, the President committed it for convincing her to do so, (at least, as per the agreement her and Adama reached about military decisions) Apollo comitted it by trying to stop Tigh from taking the president and Boomer committed it by shooting Adama. And all of them had or probably will have consequences. That's why these characters can't just "not do something"

Data Cable

Or he's not, y'know, swimming in hooch.

6:29 How have I gone so far without being a Patreon?!?...

Troy Convers

Crashdown wasn't wrong about the mission parameters though. The needs of the many.

David Brown

Glad you're going with Youtube for the Full Length Reactions now. That's the better option to go with.

Hugo Fitzpatrick

"To Frag" is military slang for killing your superior officer, often when they are irrational or giving orders which you or the group fear will lead to your death/ defeat. In WW1 and WW2, and especially Vietnam, it was exceptionally high for soldiers to kill bad officers in awful situations. The stranded team on Kobol were very much in a Vietnam type situation waiting for air support to rescue them in the jungle etc.

John

So say we all.

This episode and your reaction to it are the reason I’m glad I subscribed to your Patreon! Keep up the good work! I even like your banter about snacks and jelly bellies. 😊

Chief Tyrol just *screaming* down the very mention of a vote was a nice touch. He was the senior noncom of that motley squad, and so his job was to advise and back up the CO. He showed his commitment by one moment (privately) telling Crashdown he was making a terrible mistake, and the next cutting off even the idea that the LT’s word wasn’t law. Yeah—when they saw the count of Centurions was off, Tyrol brought up going back for the dish, more than once. But: if you pay close attention, he only did it once for each new piece of info or new escalation between Crashdown and Callie. He never questioned Crashdown’s authority: he was “advising” the LT as the situation developed, as was his job. It’s debatable whether Crashdown would have really killed Callie, but—title of the episode to the contrary—I don’t think Tyrol was going to kill Crashdown. It had to be Baltar. (Maybe Tyrol would have done it, but it would have completely, totally, broken him.) There’s a famous story about a Navy captain who had the option to head to either of two ports for shore leave, there was no reason to pick one over the other, he really didn’t care, so he put up a tally sheet on the bulletin board to get a poll on which port the crew would rather go to. He was court-martialed and drummed out of service. It’s not a democracy, period.

The show is very much a product of its time, but it's outstanding at capturing the vibe. Great writing, a cast replete with great actors whose complex characters you viscerally respond to, and an inexorable parade of fights against constant existential threat. As for my reaction to this episode, I wasn't nearly as traumatized as you two were, but I did very much feel resigned to the insanity of the times. @Paula, when I responded to your tweet about just finishing an episode and you said it was this one, I really couldn't think of any consoling response. It's like, what do you say after watching this? I hope you fare better with the rest of the season.

Jonathan

The scenes on Kobol in these episodes beat out most high-budget war movies for tension and realism. The use of practical effects, the acting, the wardrobe/makeup. Amazingly done.

Jonathan

Of course the REAL question is who did Six mean when she said one would turn on the others? Crashdown? Or Baltar?

Jonathan

Yup. "Callie disobeyed an order so Crashdown pointed his gun at her and Baltar shot him" would NOT go down well as an explanation. Even if Crashdown was nuts, the idea you can refuse to take on a suicide mission or even kill your commander if they order you on one would be too dangerous for the military order to let slide.

Derek Orr

Mutiny and disobeying orders are 2 different things Kara was following the orders of the president of the colonies. The “agreement”’you referenced was a casual conversation, not a constitutional matter or act of legislation. And is basically meaningless as there was no clear distinction of what was a military matter or civilian matter…especially in their circumstances

Slothlyke

Back in my day, it said R2D2 51:50 These are not real people? "All this has happened before, and all of it will happen again."
