Luck Dragon's Lair

If she does end up being a future companion then maybe there was an actual reason for him to have to die... but otherwise I agree. :)

Luck Dragon's Lair

I think the biggest Clara vibes come from that fearlessness that pushes the doctor past his attempted comfort zone/protective nature into potentially self-destructive or something like that... but I LOVE LOVE LOVE her so far so let's GOOOO! :)

Joe Cleveland

I’m also tired of the Moffatt disparagement of faith — ha-ha clergy are all really soldiers ready to kill for blind faith — One of the things that I loved was when the 13th Doctor admitted to their faith (“Something I believe in my faith…” Demons of the Punjab). Chibnall could deal with faith that didn’t fit in the stereotypical box that we put faith in, and I really appreciated that. Blind faith isn’t faith, especially willfully blind faith. And I really liked this episode! Loved the tension and immobilizing the Doctor and making him have to talk his way out of the situation.

Paul Flux

Well, Paula's previous prediction that "three episodes in Ruby will discover it's not just fun and games" was spot on 10/10.

ButtyOh

The song is played at the start of Outlander because it's about Bonnie Prince Charlie. The Scottish asshat who did such a crappy job of putting himself on the British throne

Paul Flux

Note that the Anglican Marines are the same organisation who fought alongside the Doctor, River and Amy against the Weeping Angels in The Time of Angels, and a renegade faction of them under Madame Kastarian kidnapped Amy at Demon's Run. Also the Vilengaard Corporation being the leading Arms manufacturer is mentioned in The Empty Child. Ultimately the Doctor closes them down and replaces their factories with banana plantations.

Paul Flux

I'm with Kat in finding Splice's lack of emotional reaction to her father's passing very wierd and jarring. And also with Paula that Canto's death the moment after Mundy finally realised that he loves her is one too many emotional twists than needed. Ironic that in Eccleston's era Moffat teased RTD about how many characters Russell was killing off. Hence "just for once, everybody lives!" being the ending of The Doctor Dances!

Paul Flux

I'm so happy that you've had the chance to see Sandman, Kat! As a fan of the original comic books I'm confidently predicting that Jenna Coleman will have further chances to shine in Season 2. The first season was such a good adaptation, and I can see why Neil Gaiman is so proud of his cast, they are all superb!

ALFONSO SMITH III

The Doctor singing the theme song of the next show you should react to (Outlander)... or not... but maybe...

Nicole Mazza

This episode was all I ever wanted for this season. I've just not emotionally connected with the show much since Capaldi left, so it was so nice to feel that love again for the show (and the Doctor -- Ncuti really clicked into place as the Doctor for me here). 😍😍😍

Nicole Mazza

Rose was also like that, though?

Josef Schiltz

Lt Cmdr. Susan Ivanova: "No Boom today, Boom tomorrow. BOOM! BOOOOM!! . . . . . . What are you all looking at? Get back to your stations!"

tal goren

No, Rose was a lot more in awe of the doctor and let him call the shot. Clara challenged him more, which is the reason why she continued to live her ordinary day to day life instead of becoming a full time Tardis resident.

tal goren

Funny you mentioned Babylon 5, since Kat haircut reminded me of the show. But alas, the gals would not understand why...

tal goren

After watching this episode I came to the conclusion that Moffat is actually addicted to deus ex machinas. Surrendering was a perfectly logical way to solve the episode's conflict, but instead of implementing that, in the last moment Moffat gave the dad AI magical powers to destroy the computers that created him, because it was armed with human spirit of something.

Karl Ward

There's always a (Susan) twist at the end? ;-)

Luck Dragon's Lair

I was trying to keep it hypothetical to avoid directly stating it as fact in case they wanted to avoid knowing that :) BUt it's not a huge secret or anything. :) hehe...

Nicole Mazza

But, I feel like Chibnall did the intro of a character then immediately killed them thing WAAAAY more often, though? Even in Jodie's first ep, you have the grandfather talking to his grandchild who gets killed immediately or the one gay guy in his first Christmas episode that gets immediately killed. And that's not even all of such characters. I mean, I get that Paula hates Moffat in the way I hate RTD, but I try to make sure to check myself when I say I hate something when one writer does it, but don't hate it when ANOTHER does. And yes, that's just bias, but still. It's just a big nitpick I've had since back Moffat was showrunner -- people giving pass to other writers for things they hate about Moffat. It just doesn't compute in my head. If you hate the trope, you hate it across the board. 🤷 P.S. On a related note, I find it funny how so many people keep saying 'Oh, Moffat was writing, so we're going to get a lot of people killed', when usually the criticism of him was that he didn't kill people enough and always resurrected them.

Nicole Mazza

Also, RTD said that he REALLY likes the idea of the companion being in peril and almost dying, so he liked that Ruby was almost killed. That was HIS call. HE'S the showrunner. Did that mean that Ruby was sidelined somewhat? Yes, maybe. But next week is supposed to be a Ruby-heavy/Doctor-lite story, so it's balanced with this one. Like back when RTD was the showrunner before. Again, not Moffat's fault. This is the arc that RTD wants. It's ultimately his creative decision.

Nicole Mazza

Of course it's also a Second Doctor reference. :)

Derek Orr

Surrendering would have a higher chance for not feeling as powerful an ending as the AI dad though

Derek Orr

Agreed, 1,000% it felt like more grown up Doctor Who again…especially coming so soon after musicals and babies and bathroom humour

Derek Orr

Well he never made it to the throne🤷‍♂️

Derek Orr

The negative reaction to anti faith or anything like pro atheist themes is definitely something I keep only seeing from Americans….its similar (in a very general sense) to how we often see Americans with pro gun viewpoints (even some pretty liberal progressive democrats will still have a lukewarm fondness for 2nd amendment). Much of the rest of the western world, anglosphere and Europe is quite secular and atheist and pro heavy gun control

Makhiel

Look on the bright side, Costo could've been turned into a talking brick :) Great episode but (and I'm absolutely not blaming the actress) Splice was a very frustrating character.

Nicole Mazza

I get that. I mean, I'm American and technically a person of faith (though pagan and very much not Christian) and it didn't bother me at all, as I got the point of what the story was saying and very much agreed with the stance. But I've definitely seen people really upset about that aspect of the story and can also see how a lot of that is baked into our culture here in the States, as you said, so it makes sense. (Still don't agree with Paula's take, though. But obviously it's a YMMV thing)

Mark Ten

A banger! After Jodie's repressed feelings its good see the Doctor wearing his heart on his sleeve. Enjoyed all the callbacks to Anglican Marines, Villengard, Stealing the moon & fish fingers. Ncuti's performance was wonderful

Mark Ten

Hey Paula--- at least he didnt bring Clara back.

Josef Schiltz

Great Maker! I suspect that they might enjoy Babylon 5.

Josef Schiltz

Of course, all writers can tend to drift into self-indulgence. RTD, I think, tends to drift into it a little too easily and that is, basically, because the show's format can allow for it. He could take his hand out of the sweet jar a little earlier than is his wont sometimes as some of his writing can tend to lack fibre! I always thought that the character of Doctor Who is nearer to Babylon 5 and JM Straczynski's writing rather than RTD's 'Whoops Apocalypse' style of writing. Babylon 5 and Doctor Who, I feel, are companionable series. Sadly, though there may be others, I've only found Medusa Cascade has reacted to B5.

Firefly24601

I wonder if Splice was originally meant to be a much younger child. It would make more sense with her dialogue and actions.

Firefly24601

Unfortunately, Kat has trypophobia. So the Narns make that a very improbable occurance.

Josef Schiltz

Mm. I know. Though I wouldn't have thought that the Narns appearance would be that triggering? Maybe Kat could see what one looks like. Edit: Looking back, they are a bit more spotty than I recall. Don't know about that one.

Time Lord

I just looked up a photo and it's definitely a little bit of a hard one 😅 I feel like sometimes I could watch it and other times not. Probably a good one for my own watch time off camera - Kat

Josef Schiltz

The Narn are a major character species though. Damn, that's a pity. I believe you would really enjoy the series otherwise, but it may be too much of a tough one given the trypophobia. I have a phobia of dolls and claustrophobia so you can imagine that certain episodes of Doctor Who can be difficult for me to handle. Just the way our brains are wired. Foiled by character design!

Trey Harris

I wonder if being actors makes you more likely to see the manipulation in the moment than civilian watchers. I mean, I definitely know this is one of Moffat’s writing tics, especially in Doctor Who—how many Moffat “base under siege” stories had multiple professions of unrequieted love and almost nobody but the Doctor and companion left at the end? And what’s more, if you go back and look at his prior episodes with his version of Anglicans—unless I’m mistaken, I think *every single one* has “character who we just got to like got killed and is now speaking from beyond the grave” moments. Angel Bob, Tasha Lem, headless Monks, etc. I suspect in his head it’s a “they believe in an afterlife, and look—it’s true, after a fashion” irony? Looking back, I can see the artifice. But the moments still hit for me in the watching.

Darryl Glynn

OMG, that was a great episode. I love the anti-capitalism, and anti-theism sentiment.

Darryl Glynn

Faith is an unreliable source of knowing what is true.
