Looks like someone has to deal with the consequences of their actions and that doesn't look good or easy. This was a rough one y'all, a lot of real things happening in these episodes that relate so heavily to things happening to day.

Thank you all for being here with us on these watch throughs and thank you for always being a supportive and wonderful community!

The next one will be even worse for you, but hey we did get the start of a budding romance for Kara, and that Tigh is still a decent man when Lady Tigh isn't squeezing his yambag.

RIPBriggs

So... um... you girls are gonna need two boxes of tissues, sick bags or punch bags, next time too.

It's always darkest before the dawn. This show is constantly dragging you down into despair but the a single ray of hope will pierce through the darkness and it proves to be some of the most cathartic television ever only to go extremely dark again. I can only speak for myself and all I'll say is that after all the heartbreak and darkness I feel that the hope shines through and shows that the strength of the human spirit can overcome even the most dour and hopeless of situations. Almost everyone can gain redemption and find peace. It truly is a wonderful show even as it rips your heart out because at the end of the day it is about the power of hope and perseverance in our darkest hours because if we band together we can overcome it all and bring ourselves into a better place.

Regarding elections, remember that Roslyn WASN'T ELECTED....

Mike Connaghan

I'm going to hold all my comments about government and society and whatnot until the series ends, and then I'll continue to not say anything, because probably our own civilization will be over. Anyway, it's good to enjoy shows while we can.

bakamitai

If there's any lesson I learned from the last scene, it's that everyone, no matter whether you believe them to be a friend or an enemy, still bleeds the same color.

Troy Convers

Jesus Christ, stop with the fucking nihilism.

Locoturbo

I promise eventually there will be some lighter / feelgood episodes to break up the trauma! Now for an opinion that might aggravate you, lol. I'm not saying I agree with Tigh's decisions. But, like with Crashdown, we have to remember it's a military. Cally couldn't just not follow orders because she was scared. And once Tigh made the decision to declare temporary martial law (which had some merit since both the president and VP were out of commission for different reasons, leaving no one in charge of their equivalent of an executive branch) ships couldn't just refuse orders because they disagreed. I actually like Ellen's comment "let's all sit down and talk about how we feel about martial law." Adama wouldn't have chosen this path, but if he HAD declared martial law, he would not have been wishy washy about it, that's for sure. I think the show usually does a good job of providing reasons and justifications for most people's decisions even if you dislike them.

Mike Connaghan

And stop calling me Jesus Christ. I'm Jesus Jones.

Brina Blue

You asked about what kept me going upon first watch. Here are my reasons: I'd have to say a lot of it was because I had been a fan of the first show and I just had to see what was going to happen in this one! The acting was phenomenal. I was already a fan of Edward James Olmos from his Miami Vice days and was aware of Mary McDonnel, but the rest of them really shined! Another was that with new episodes being a week apart, we had to wait a week to digest what had happened before we came back for more punishment. I personally also did a second viewing later in the week with Ron Moore's Podcast in the background dissecting each episode. I liked that there was never any spoiler information and these were pretty much episode specific.

Mike Connaghan

Anyhoo, you don't have to be embarrassed that we don't have the same sense of humor. I mean, I won't tell you how to feel. Who does that?

Nolan

How did I keep going? I binged S1-4.0 in a week. I think my first watch was definitely more "gotta see what happens next" than it was about the characters or allegories... those came with further rewatches. The way Callie shot Boomer was an homage to Jack Ruby's shooting of Lee Harvey Oswald under police escort. There's a LOT of historical homages in this show. "All this has happened before, and will happen again." indeed.

gobmob2000

Its interesting to see how much it effects you two, I watched it first when I was in my late teens and it never bothered me, but then again neither do Horror films, I think in my mind I categorise it as fiction so I don't let it bother me. As for what you could do, maybe take a break half way through the season and watch something else, Firefly is a good one because it is lighthearted and only lasts for a season.

Ashtara Levin

What kept me coming back when I first watched it was the strength of the main characters. I could always count on Starbuck's conviction, I could always count on Helo's morals and I could always count on Commander Adama's sense of honor.. Even when you are accosted with the likes of Ellen Tigh for an episode or two.. it also ends with Adama comforting Tigh telling him "I've also made some bad calls". This show is brutally honest about the horrors of war, but at its core, even though the "survival count" might be dwindling, I always found it to be immensely respectful of life, and thus I always had faith that the human fleet would pull out of it at the end..

Hugo Fitzpatrick

Caly basically fulfilling the Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald role was such a great shock twist. Love that moment.

Mike Connaghan

Having said that, if Kat and Paula don't feel exactly how I feel about any show, I will cancel them.

In answer to your question about how you keep going when the emotional content is so demanding: You are doing exactly what is necessary—don’t stop feeling what you’re feeling even if it hurts sometimes. Don’t stop telling us your thoughts and showing us what you’re going through. We’re with you. You’re actually fulfilling EXACTLY what the writers and producers and actors intended. That’s what’s amazing about this whole series—it’s designed to make you FEEL , and to feel everything deeply. This is on purpose, so that you become invested in the characters and their long, gradual plot arcs. You’re still in the early stages of their journey, but these characters will grow and change, and you’ll grow and change with them. It’s why we viewers keep coming back over and over, because we love watching someone new take that journey. Our hearts are there with you…please keep going and continue speaking your thoughts and expressing your deep feelings on everything! It’s why we love watching you. 😊

John

"The last episode was the one that really wrecked us..." Um, can you narrow that down a bit?

Ann & Alex Taylor

There are moments of joy to come, along with the darkness. They affected us more, because the joy always has to be earned.

Data Cable

The original series had a card game called Pyramid, and an arena sport called Triad. The producers of this series accidentally swapped the names, what with them being so similar.

Jonathan

I really hope you persevere with the series. Not gonna lie, there are a lot of episodes like this, but overall the arc IS one of hope not despair. And it has some of the best character acting in any science fiction show ever.

Jonathan

It's interesting that the girls were all "I hope Adama is SO MAD at Tigh!" at the start, but in the end it turns out he's sympathetic about the pressure of command and wants to work together to pick up the pieces.

John

I'm glad to hear you two have people to warn you about seriously triggering scenes coming up, hopefully without too much spoiler content. There's a lot of HARD issues covered in various episodes. I believe the journey is worth it.

John

Saul Tigh is my favorite character on the show for reasons. One of them is he does have a moral compass even though he's plagued by alcoholism and a toxic wife. At his core I think he genuinely wants to do the right thing but he makes decisions he KNOWS are bad. Then the guilt eats him up and makes it worse. It's so very human. He's such a real and believable person. I want him to do better and it's upsetting when he doesn't because I care. The writers had to make me care first, and that's where his character shines.

Derek Orr

Squeezing his yambag? Wtf?

Ben Chan

Dissolving the government and declaring marshal law wasn't a military decision - it was a coup. He was acting outside his purview and it had nothing to do with obeying the chain of command.(like your example with Cally)

Ben Chan

When Kat said that Ellen was a "conniving..." I really thought they were going to say something else during that first syllable... (which would've been just as accurate)

Nolan

Another thought: how much are Cally's actions in this episode are from her own guilt and PTSD from freezing up in the mission last episode resulting in Crashdown being shot? She couldn't flank and shoot at the cylons, but she managed to do it here. She had a gun in her face and felt helpless, now she lashing out in anger, and took control in her eyes here. None of this is said of course, it's all left in the sub-text with such nuance, and that's why I love this show.

Troy Convers

Not a wrestling fan then? 😂

Locoturbo

Adama and Roslin agreed at the start that military matters would fall under his purview. When she didn't like that, she did an end run around him, manipulated Thrace, and took away a key military asset all because of religious visions. Not sure what to say if you think Adama should have just said "ok that's fine. "

tal goren

if you want lighthearted and short there is always the original Battlestar show. although that one might be to silly

tal goren

Also, despite what we all probably though he read all the forms Dee brought him to sign. he may be an impulsive drunk, but he IS a professional.

Time Lord

Believe me when I say I was VERY close 😂 -Kat

Ann & Alex Taylor

"The writer who refuses to explore the darker regions of the heart will never be able to write convincingly about the wonder, the magic and the joy of love for just as goodness cannot be trusted unless it has breathed the same air as evil." ~Nick Cave

Trey Harris

It’s funny you started the episode with a Steven Universe reference, because I think this show is almost an anti-Steven Universe. Weird connection, but both series are ultimately about dealing with trauma and relationships. Steven Universe is built around figuring out how to deal with toxicity, trauma and negative emotions in a healthy way, when (nearly) everyone wants to act in good faith. Battlestar Galactica says, “yep—and here’s what happens if everyone just said, ‘frack that!’”

Karl Ward

My advice Paula, in fact Kat as well, is to work through it, there are episodes, and I think I know of the one you speak, that will make you, (they did me), feel deeply disturbed. Just please take the time away, if you need it, to process and get help if you feel you need to. Rest assured there is a moral to it but if you need time and help just take it and none of us, I'm sure, will think any the less of you.

Colin Ramsay

“How’d you get through it”? Taking a year off between seasons helped” 😉. Anyhoo currently doing my 2nd run through after a 20 something year break alongside your past selves and it’s a whole different experience when you know what’s coming, the foreshadowing in this series is unreal.
