Pure sci-fi mindfuckery. And one hell of a callback.

Always enjoyed this episode, it’s quite a clever sci-fi idea regarding what happened to Red Dwarf. I don’t know if next week it’ll be s8e01, or the making of, but either one will be fun to see. I’m someone who has always liked S8, so I’m intrigued to see what you reaction to it is.

You say at the end Rimmer was away filming Tomb Raider. I'm fairly certain he wasn't. I think he was filming another pretty big comedy show he did back in the 90s called Brittas empire. And was also sick of playing rimmer. But s7 made him like it again so he came back for s8. I might be wrong but that's what I've always heard

Katrine Myra

I'm actually able to watch on the day of release this time! *jumps in*

Troy Convers

S8 is a hybrid; production values of S7, but filmed in front of a live audience. And another element that will make itself VERY evident straight from the start; for once, continuity is in play, and how!

Troy Convers

I've warmed to S8 on a recent rewatch.

TuneIntoSanityFM

I'd suggest toast and scrambled egg with the kippers!

As much as I loved Hattie's portrayal of Hollie, seeing Norman's appear on the watch with the classic "All right dudes" never fails to bring a smile to my face. Side note, even if you gals don't enjoy what comes from now on, I really hope you will end up watching the remainder of the show (including the new episodes that will be filmed later this year (broadcast date not confirmed as yet)

Series 7 definitely wasn't my favourite, but it definitely has it's moments. Series 8 I have to say is my least favourite series but the interactions of two characters in particular provided by far the best moments of that series. I think you'll be able to work out which two right from the outset! If you're going to make kippers, please keep the kitchen door closed and the windows open - kippers have a strong smell, and it definitely lingers!

Not gonna lie...I actually got a little choked up when the original music kicked in for the reveal of the reconstituted Red Dwarf. I think that reveal may actually be my favorite moment of this series. Keep Calm and Smeg On, Gallifrey Gals! Mr. Flibble and I will be here smoking a kipper and girding our loins for Series VIII.

I know a lot of people who hard stop at series six. I was enthused enough by series VII and IX to attend the Dimension Jump fan conventions of those years. I think X is my favourite of the later years and I’ve grown to really appreciate the latest 90 minute special.

Nolan

This one honestly felt more plot-y, having less of an identity than being just a transitional episode. That said, you guys didn't really highlight that when Lister asked about sex, as in, how's that gonna work with one arm, Kristine answers "Not here, it's too sandy." As if he just asked her to have it and that's the only reason she wouldn't. Small but interesting character moment.

Troy Convers

I've always thought that this idea would have been a fantastic Voyager season arc, with Voyager in the Red Dwarf role and four crew members on the Delta Flyer searching for it.

Frank Murphy

I think you will enjoy series 8. Bit like porridge in Space

Katrine Myra

Well, there you have it - series VII. As you say, opinions differ on both series VII and VIII, but I do think it's fair to say that VIII is, unfortunately, the least liked series of the show. VII does have its issues, but as you've noted, it has some absolutely incredible episodes to go with the lackluster ones and writing/characterization issues. Some people can't look past the bad, others feel the good far outweighs everything else, and so you get fairly polarized opinions. Add to that the sexist complaints about Kochanski - there are legitimate issues there, but "eeew lady in my space man show" is not one of them - and the lack of Rimmer, the drastic changes and... well. VIII, on the other hand, is more even in quality (IMO). Can't say much more than that without spoilers, but I will add: In my humble opinion, once you get through VIII, it just keeps getting better. (Though IX is a personal favorite - closely followed by the final mini-series, which OWNS MY HEART.) Oh btw, in case you're curious about the roman numerals: I have no idea where it originated, but traditionally this was how the series number was written, and as someone with dyscalculia, I have rather a fondness for it. I'm not just being weird. :D

Katrine Myra

It was a little bit of both, as I recall - but they'll get into that in the documentaries...!

Katrine Myra

Agreed! Well, can't speak for the kippers.

When they first found Red Dwarf right where they lost it, I thought for a moment that they traveled back in time and would have to steal it from themselves, but I guess "Red Dwarf was actually in Lister laundry basket all along" is funnier. Anyway, since the Kryten from kochanski's universe still has his nanobots, I kind of wonder how their crew lost their Red dwarf.

Lizbeth Marcs

They didn't. I seem to remember that Kochanski was surprised they were living on Starbug. Plus uterine replicators were all on Red Dwarf, not Starbug.

Lizbeth Marcs

I hope next week you'll do the unproduced episode from this season "The Enemy Within". If they had done the episode, it would have been a classic.

Travis Boyle

I really liked Promised Land

Sebastian Bodine

I actually like Series VIII more than Series VII, but in either case, Doug Naylor did a lot of work to let this show fall into a formulaic rut like most show runners do. I bet most people would rather sit down and watch Red Dwarf Series VII and VIII than watch the final season of GoT

Geraint Harrison

Small correction; it’s called ‘Identity Within’ :)

David Shadwell

So this wraps up series VII and it is an odd episode. The jokes fall a bit flat in places and are a bit samey, especially concerning the Cat. The scene with Kryten and Lister trying the arms is great, as are some of the earlier scenes with a depressed Lister. But obviously very thin on plot and this is basically just to move things along to get to the end and the return of the Dwarf. Overall, I have enjoyed this season a bit more than the last time I watched it. Shame it took about 4 episodes for them to get the Kochanski characterisation settled and bedded in but that is always a problem in these short seasons. But Series VIII. Yeah. Watched once and really didn't like it. Tried to watch it again and found it even worse. For me, and this is obviously only personal, there are just to many missteps in jokes, characterisations, stories and the general way the 'world' is portrayed. Too many jokes that are juvenile or even misogynistic or just plain vile. The McGuffin that sets up the series direction is just mindlessly stupid and illogical. Without giving too much away, the way that some of the cast are portrayed or the info we learn about them just destroys a lot of the series premise for me as well. It stretches credibility of the world this show inhabits so thin. Shame really. So apologies to those who like VIII, I'm glad you do but I find it such a slog. Maybe 2 out of 8 stories are ok (maybe only the 1?). That is ep 4 and possibly 8. Ep1 might have been decent but for "that" joke with the call back to something found in 'Quarantine' but nostalgia can only save it so much. So might see you on the other side if I can't watch through my fingers as I don't think this is going to be pretty.

tal goren

so, how come they were on the same time zone as our gang, who spent a few hundred years in statis to catch up with red dwarf?

Lizbeth Marcs

I...like...S8 more than S7 [hangs head in shame]. I think because when S8 focuses on the double-act that we are all referring to, the show sparkles to the point where they can carry the weakest of episodes (and there are some really weak ones in S8). The problem is that it feels like certain cast members get almost relegated to tertiary characters while the double-act pretty much dances to their own tune. I kind of view S7 as Red Dwarf's experiment in being a slightly funnier version of Dr. Who. While S8 is Red Dwarf's experiment in being a workplace sitcom with some unfortunate mid-90s laddish humor.

Lizbeth Marcs

Hahahahaha. I knew I should have looked up the title. It's still a great {unproduced} episode.

Lizbeth Marcs

*raises hand* I think you and me might be the Series VIII defenders on here. And I give Doug a lot of credit for trying a lot of different things to keep Red Dwarf modern-ish. I get the sense it's because Doug actually listens to people he works with, unlike some show runners who decide they're the be-all and end-all.

Skyrous

Another thing you can react to now is "Can't Smeg Won't Smeg". It was a parody of a British cooking show. It has the entire cast doing a cooking show in character including both Kochanski and Rimmer.

Lizbeth Marcs

Oh, yes! Please! It's hilarious. It kind of cracks me up how Chris Barrie comes across as kind of the peacemaker when things get really out of hand. And they do. Veeeery quickly.
