Really intrigued to find out what you think of this one! 🤔

Some rural towns in the UK can be hostile to outsiders, not all obviously. Add in the history between England and it's neighbours. I think the portrayal is exaggerated but not totally unbelievable. Edit: Also they absolutely fleeced her on the prices. £70 for a room and a glass of Coke is definitely tourist prices

The reason why it was a Doctor light episode is because Ncuti had to finished shooting sex education when they started production.

you shouldn't feel bad about the length of your intros. your conversations are the reason we are here. every time it seems like you are about to start watching quickly I get worried. fortunately, it always end with you getting distracted by some off topic subject and continuing to talk for a few more minutes.

I really liked this one. I know that some people don't like that the story is not fully explained and rationalised, but personally I like the mystery here, and that it makes the audience think and draw their own conclusions about what really happened. You referenced Haunting of Hill House/Bly Manor, but for me there were hints of Don't Look Now, The Wicker Man, The Quiet Earth, and even 2001 A Space Odyssey. All of which are great movies!

The episode was so captivating I didn't even notice it doesn't have an intro. The Welsh people were a bit over the top but otherwise I'll be thinking about this one for a while, absolutely didn't expect them to try making another Blink. This was the first episode produced for this season and the first script Millie Gibson got to read, which is kind of bonkers.

Amol Rajan is a real news reporter, but he doesn't have grey hair like that in real life.... yet. Also the older lady at the bar, with the berret, is Siân Phillips. She's a very distinguished actor of stage and screen. Her most famous screen work is probably her role as the terrifying Livia in I, Claudius (1976) alongside the likes of Brian Blessed, Derek Jacobi, John Hurt, and Patrick Stewart. A masterpiece of scripting, acting, and camera blocking, that puts many more modern higher budget shows to shame.

Stick to the road, lads. And beware the moon!

it is interesting that just like the last episode, the drama here start when the doctor doesn't watch his steps. he basically stepped on a magical mine and ceased to exist. as for why everyone got so scared from the woman, I think that looking at her make them understand on an instinctive level that they are living in a dead end timeline and that nothing they would do really matter because future Ruby is on her way to erase everything. she is basically the anti-life equation.

There can be a lot of animosity towards the English in certain parts of Wales, due to the literal thousands of years of being fought against at every hurdle, following Henry VIII's Act of Union, the use of Welsh was banned and its official status was removed. Usually there's banter and friendly rivalry between the countries but I grew up in a rural part of Wales and some people genuinely despise the English.

Absolutely loved this one!

I’m away shooting on location at the minute so can’t do the synced watch along - but I definitely will when I’m back home!

Also some people are no nonsense in Wales. I kinda miss it.

I like this episode overall but I'm ambivalent about the complete lack of explanation: the Doctor being He Who Knows The Explanations is an aspect of the series that I miss here. On a broader scale, I'm ambivalent about the recurring theme of the supernatural into Doctor Who. Through all its many eras and styles and tones, the series has always been science fiction, not fantasy. Often very soft science fiction, true, but still. It could be that this is part of a season arc that will get resolved in the finale. But if RTD intends it as a permanent shift in the Whoniverse, I don't like it. (I like fantasy as well as SF, but I just want Dr Who to stay Dr Who.) On a side point the Gals mention in the intro: I don't think Ruby traveled with the Doctor for six months before her first alien sky in "Boom." They mentioned in a prior episode that it was June, which the Gals noticed was six months after the Christmas episode: but they mentioned it because the TARDIS had landed there, it doesn't have to mean that's how long it's been for Ruby.

Joe Cleveland

I think the key to the episode is what Kate Stewart says. When Ruby shares why she won’t travel by boat or plane, Kate responds: “Sounds wise. It’s what we do, all of us. We see something inexplicable and invent the rules to make it work.” What this episode gives us is a mess of inexplicable things, and the drama is how Ruby — and how _we_ — try to invent rules that will make things make sense. We are fascinated by the inexplicable and we want to control it — we want the inexplicable and we want to explain it away. The drama of this episode is the dance of these two desires we have. (That tension is kind of at the heart of Doctor Who, period.)

On the discussion about Haunting of Hill House. if you haven't seen midnight mass, I highly highly highly recommend it! It's by the same creator!

Karl Ward

As usual, loved your reaction! I think the song two episodes ago was a clue, "there's always a (susan) twist at the end"! Maybe I'm reading too much into it! There's something about the ambiguity of a story which I like, but my theory as to the reactions of people to "ghost Ruby" reminds me of 3 things. 1- Yesterdays Enterprise, when reality shifts and Guinan senses a "wrongness" about the new timeline, 2-When David Tennant, the 10th Doctor looks at Jack Hackness and says there is something "wrong" about him which makes him profoundly uncomfortable and 3-When something massive happens in your life and for a while you can't adjust to the new reality or quite believe that it's real, a sort of Mandella effect. I think when people encounter "ghost Ruby" they realise that their perception of reality is so terribly wrong that they must get away from it and that it's linked to real Ruby, like 2 positive poles of a magnet repelling each other and they can't bear it? Sorry long answer but that's my thoughts!! And thanks to the both of you for being, well, you!

The taxi that her mum got in is the same one the Shaun Temple drove in the star beast

I hope it was a magic thing that was being said to people, because Carla is not on my good side right now. Or Kate and UNIT. But then that was what stretched credibility for the episode for me and made it fall apart for me personally.

Nicole Mazza

I also feel like this is another case of RTD not doing endings so well. It just felt like it needed a better edit for me.

Trey Harris

I don’t know whether this episode is going to be one of those “some things just go unexplained” ones, or if it’s going to tie into some grand unified theory of Susan Twist/Mrs. Flood/The One Who Waits/Ruby’s parentage/etc. It definitely feels like it *could* be something like Amy’s story where the apparently-unexplained bits eventually ended up all being puzzle-box pieces. I’m still wondering if the supernatural is a permanent addition to the show, or if it and “mavity” will get the reset button by the end of the season or end of Ncuti’s run. But I think I’m okay with it being just unexplained—because it’s so spooky and weird? Sometimes with Doctor Who the vibe is more important than the “logic”.

Trey Harris

Funny, for me that was what sold it—Kate has been such a consistently clearheaded and moral (if sometimes violence-condoning) force in the show that, when SHE reacted the same way, I just knew this was really something—literally—unspeakably terrible and beyond ken. It didn’t tarnish Carla or Kate for me, it just made whatever magic was going on that much more terrifying.
