A well written episode, we get to see another Cylon model, another part of 'The Plan's and a delve into Starbuck's upbringing. But holy high hell, describing it that way doesn't even begin to tell how fucking dark this episode is, and that's as a man with great parents; lord knows how traumatic it was to watch for any woman, then any woman with crappy parents...❤️❤️❤️

Troy Convers

The Cylon doctor was also in the Star Trek Voyager two parter, 'Equinox'.

Troy Convers

"Previously on-" I FUCKING KNOW WHAT HAPPENED 😂😂😂😂

Finally, 5th cylon!! I love Simon's actor, so good at being a little creepy but still appealing somehow, and so well-spoken. As mentioned he had a guest role in ST Voyager, and I think also in Stargate. And I wish there had been at least a little friction between the Caprica resistance and Sharon. Someone showing open animosity, even if they kept it to under a minute. That teamup went down a little too easy.

I've always felt like this is the turning point for this season where the plot starts showing signs of movement near the end of the episode. Until now it this season really has been dealing with the chain of crises set up in the previous season finale and it's always felt to me like standing still and putting out fires. Speaking briefly of Moffat, he was always really great at building tension and mystery and really, really, terrible at ever resolving it without trying to double down on it in some way, at least in all of his work that I've seen. One point I'd like to make, after watching this series I've realized that Adama is very stoic but feels his feelings extremely deeply and so, say when he feels hurt or betrayed, it really often show up first in his actions which can seem irrational and out of character for such a normally seeming even-keeled person.

Oh great,Roslyn is now a religious fanatic. Just fracking peachy.

Troy Convers

Yep, he was a Jaffar who opposed Teal'cs point of view in a very good ep.

Jack Rogers

I love stories where both sides have good points, the military should not be in charge of the government, but also imagine if the US President stole military assets and secrets for personal use because a vision told him to? They all just don't know how to deal with each other.

Troy Convers

Yeah, that was just handwaved away and too convenient.

Mike Connaghan

I have seen some enthusiastic intros in my day, and that... was also an intro!

Jonathan

Starbuck's first words on jumping back to Caprica were "I'm home". Her last words before leaving were "Let's go home."

Mike Connaghan

You are programmed to watch the entire show.

Nolan

No, to me she's clearly at this point using it as a means to an end. "I'm playing the religious card" She believes there's truth in the prophecies, but she's not bought in to where she believes in the gods and such, just only so far as the prophecies will help her save what's left of humanity. She clearly is not comfortable with the idea of blessing people, but is doing it because it's the role she's playing into.

Ben Chan

It's a conundrum: who do you want in charge of government - the military or the church? It doesn't help that we love Adama and Roslin. It's just never fun when mom and dad are fighting. 😭

(Sorry this is way long, but I ended up doing a little research based on your post-episode comments and thought someone might appreciate it…) In retrospectives of BSG, for the producers this episode always comes up as a specific turning point. BSG’s ratings were on the bubble for SyFy (then The Sci-Fi Channel) — they always were through BSG’s run, pretty much — but BSG had an interesting thing going on as far as the network people were concerned: it had a female-skewing demo. It wasn’t a *mostly* female audience; like all of Si-Fi’s programs, the audience was majority male. But BSG had a higher female/male ratio than any other show, and it had been increasing through the run. And almost every time it came up for renewal, its status as the most popular show on the network with women was what pushed it over the line, because Si-Fi needed a ‘foothold’ show to demonstrate it could diversify. And in that context, this episode really spooked the network execs — before production even — because they thought it would turn women off, maybe permanently. S2E02, “Valley of Darkness”, had already been controversial in the network because of the dark places it went, and the network basically asked the producers to skip this storyline. But they pushed back; they felt the disturbing content was essential to a lot of upcoming story beats. (No spoilers, but obviously the Helo/Sharon and Baltar/Six stage had already been set.) The studio went to bat for the producers for this episode, and it ended up getting produced mostly as planned (though now tied into the Helo/Sharon storyline, and with a B plotline in the Fleet, when it was originally going to *just* be a Kara-and-Cylons bottle episode). But its effect on the gender demo became a sort of bet: if this episode hurt the show with women, the show would likely be cancelled. Yet female engagement actually strengthened with this episode — and continued to strengthen through two more upcoming episodes with disturbing plotlines involving misogynistic threads. And by the end of the season, women were matching or exceeding men in the ratings. (And my recollection is that in the industry press, women writers tended to be the ones championing and evangelizing this show.) It was because these plotlines existed within a POV of the show that these threads were *supposed* to be disturbing and frakked up, and were supposed to address real-world injustices. The show was anti-misogyny by showing misogyny, not gratuitously, but as an ugly thing to be examined and condemned. And in focus groups they found women appreciated that the show had an aspirational level of gender equality, but, unlike, say, Star Trek, didn’t pretend that misogyny and patriarchy didn’t exist. And science fiction, as always, is allegory for what’s going on in the real world.

Jonathan

Simon's misogyny does feel very on-point in this episode. No matter how accomplished Starbuck is, even if she's the best Viper pilot the galaxy has ever seen, there will be men who'll tell her to her face that her only use is making babies. Just like BSG was willing to do philosophical episodes about torture and terrorism in the aftermath of 9/11, it's never shied away from disturbing subjects.

while this would be a good reason to remove a president from office, there are non-military procedures to do that. considering the vice president is (as far as they know) a man of science, full blow military coup wasn't necessary.

tal goren

there is something interesting I noticed. the Cylons are religious fanatics, but while that usually mean thinking that god only love people like you and hate everybody else, the Cylons think the opposite. they think god love humanity and they are trying to become human so he would love them too. I didn't think it was possible to fail at being a fanatic, but this race of psychotic Pinocchios proved me wrong.

Trey Harris

Well, I don’t think it’s a spoiler as it’s not really a plot point, but other Cylons later say explicitly that they think they (the Cylons) were God’s vengeance against the wickedness of humanity, and that the Cylons are, basically, a second chance to get it right. Some think that means becoming more human, others reject that.

Travis Boyle

When you said the Cylon doctor was in DS9 I had to look him up too. He also played a character I really liked in Star Trek Enterprise.
