Not watching the making of S8?

Time Lord

We'll be holding off on the making of S8 until we've finished watching the whole season! S7 making of we'll watch at some point before that, but they are a much longer watch. Therefore, they take up more time for our recording days and my editing schedule. But they'll happen! - Kat

RIP Starbug; it's like the Enterprise in SFS all over again. 😂😭

Troy Convers

Nice of the nanobots to change Kochanski's hair and outfit for her. 😏

Jakob1978

Ah, this is a season people tend to either really like, or really dislike. I rather like it, though it has some problems which are best left to talk about until later. The costume and hair change for Kochanski was a deliberate attempt to soften the character a bit, they felt the character came across as more severe and uptight than they planned in S7, and certainly Chloe’s performance is a lot more relaxed (the studio audience helped too, giving immediate feedback) this season.

TuneIntoSanityFM

Will you watch the Howard Goodall video "Settling the score"? I'm not on the extras tier so I won't see (Unless it's a filler) but I hope you do see it- Always leaves me feeling warm and fuzzy!

Jasper de Vries

They'll never put Kryten back to factory settings. They already put Rimmer back to factory settings.

Bruce Bromley

I did like it that they tweaked the series over the years. Don't fret to hard. Gals. I doubt Chris Barrie would have come back if they said he was going to play the smeghead Rimmer again, at least for too long. Unfortunately the actors that played Peterson and Tod Hunter were unable to return.

Susan K Dailey Photography

Ah, my least favourite season. There's some really uncomfortable humour coming up, and not to my taste I have to say. After these first couple of episodes though, the best thing about this season is the Lister and Rimmer double act. The rest I can leave. Chloe Annett was asked to dye her hair for series 7 but for series 8 she was allowed to keep her hair the way she'd normally wear it.

Chris Neumann

As do I, and I feel like if they had kept making the series and just making each one a different wild swing, this series might be held in higher regard. I could see each series being almost a different genre or concept that the characters are plugged into, now that they're established enough.

Troy Convers

The cut of your version is weird; you're missing scenes near the start and the bit at the end with Rimmer getting the positive viruses is in part two!

Troy Convers

I've grown to like it more on rewatch, but yes it's bit 'laddy'. E5 is fucking cringeworthy though; possibly the worse episode of RD's run. It has NOT aged well.

Troy Convers

Look on the bright side Gals; Ace Rimmer is still out there...

Chris Neumann

IIRC this was the tenth anniversary of the series, so that's why so much of it draws on season 1/2 with the production design, tan uniforms, and all the OG cast members like Mac MacDonald, Norman Lovett, Chen and Selby, and the Blue Midgets (seen in the opening, so I don't feel like that's a spoiler). I do love that they brought back the studio audience, you can already tell the energy is different. You can also tell that Chris and Craig get along way better in their scenes together.

Matthew Hanlon

What version are you watching? Their’s matches up with iplayer.

Chris Neumann

Oh yeah, if you can get past episode 5, you're golden (and if you can get past series 8 altogether, the show goes back on track. It's an interesting side road, not a direction that sticks)

Chris Neumann

If you don't recall, the luck virus and sexual magnetism virus are from Quarantine, one of the last "on the ship' episodes of RD, and the episode that gave us Mr Flibble.

Nolan

Their version is also what's on the DVDs

Troy Convers

An extended version with no laugh track; it's 27 minutes long. Downloaded it years ago.

tal goren

I really don't understand why Lister thinks that finding the nanobots is the only way to prove their story. they are millions of light years from earth and he showed up in an extra Starbug with a robot from the future and a completely new life form. there are plenty of evidences.

Stephen Wray

The reason why Kochanski didn't get resurrected with the rest of the crew is because Lister sent her ashes into space in S1E2

James Cluskey

The episode was filmed with a live audience, so you couldn't have a version with no laugh track. The only alternative version of Back in the Red is the 90 minute xtended version from the DVD/Blu-ray.

Katrine Myra

My favorite thing about this whole reaction is the thumbnail. Yep, that's series VIII for ya! I pretty much agree with everything you've said here; it's just a bit odd, isn't it, to have the whole ship back at this point. And as Lister says about Rimmer: "it's you like ye used to be. Urgh." Having said that, I was pleasantly reminded of how much I enjoy seeing how Lister and Rimmer's relationship has changed over the years. Lister's genunine joy at seeing Rimmer again, followed by the way he almost desperately tries to... I suppose, fast track Rimmer through the character development this version missed out on...! Rimmer and Lister reacting to the older/younger version of the other person, respectively, is quite possibly what I enjoy the most about VIII. (That, and Mac McDonald. <3) I'm torn about VIII Kochanski. It's instantly evident how much more comfortable Chloë Annett is with this more natural look and relaxed outfit, but I feel it removes her character even further from the original idea of Kochanski. Which is... fine, but I almost wish they'd made her an original character. But, well, more on that later. Excited to see what you make of it all! And as others have said, once you get through VIII, the only way is up!

DoubleDutchess

It's been a really long time since I watched series VIII, but I'm pleasantly surprised by this episode. It felt like a return to form, especially compared to the low points of series VII. Still, I know it's downhill from here, but I enjoyed this one.

Mark Ten

But remember - there's something the original Rimmer does that hologram Rimmer rarely does. Something you commented you were missing... nuff said

Sebastian Bodine

The nanobots were smart to recognize that they'd already have a living Lister and Kochanski from being in the same room as them from the Series VII finale. I think it would have been hard to not have the proof they needed to exonerate themselves if there were an extra Lister and Kochanski running about.

Katrine Myra

It's not that - there simply is no Kochanski to reconstruct. Each of the crew members were reconstructed from their ashes, but only those whose ashes were still there. Remember that Lister jettisonned the ashes of some of the crew? Hers was one of them. And of course there are no Lister remains either.

Katrine Myra

Sorry if this is a spoiler btw, I don't think this is specifically mentioned in the show?

Juzzie

Unpopular opinion but this season is one of my favourites. The only thing I am not sold on is the new shape of Red Dwarf.

David Shadwell

Yeah, this is one of the reasons I really dislike this season. The whole setup and premises is completely flawed. It makes Captain Hollister look like a nasty piece of work and his previous characterisation is thrown out the window for a dumb joke that isn't even funny. The whole floor 13 concept is just stupid. Red Dwarf was a mining ship that was not built for inter-stellar space travel. It mined the moons and asteroids within the solar system. It was never going to go to Planet MacGuffin to off-load prisoners. I know continuity has never been a big thing in Red Dwarf but you can stretch it too far so that it snaps. The whole 'crew' come across as dumb and demented in this season and that fatally undermines the whole premise of Red Dwarf - Lister and Rimmer are the lowest of the low. No brains. No drive. They are the dumb ones, the last of humanity. But if the whole ship is like that, then.... so what? It's dumb. The world is dumb. It mortally damages the in-world universe for me. Couple that in with some very, very nasty jokes and story lines - like the up-coming one with the Sexual Magnetism virus that belongs in some god-awful 70's sit-com - and this season is hard work.

Porpoise Power

Lister and crew are honestly too dumb to awknowledge non-nanobot based evidence. That said... Hollister knows the 'boys from the dwarf' aren't lying/insane, and it really doesn't matter what they try to do to prove their innocence.

Rowan Talmage

Tip for skutterlovers: if you can find the original series 8 region 1 DVD set on eBay unopened, it comes with a little Matchbox car sized skutter.

Abigail

This answer is internally consistent and I’m sure this could win you a no-prize but there’s no scenes in the episodes of Lister jettisoning the crew, are there?

Abigail

YRIC (Red Dwarf debuted in February 1988. This episode was broadcast eleven years later.)

Abigail

There are fan edits of this out there - my suspicion is that Troy has one of those. (How is it “extended” at 27 minutes when the runtime of the broadcast version is 28:23?)

Lizbeth Marcs

I'm going to be the odd one here and say I enjoyed Series 8 (it made me laugh). But, yeah, as you can already tell from the first episode, this series is probably the most laddish Red Dwarf gets, so be prepared. I also see people in the comments slagging off Episode 5 of this series already. IMHO (spoiler-free opinion incoming) it's one of those episodes where the heart was in the right place and the target was the correct target, but it was somewhat poorly executed which ended up obscuring the point it was making. I recently re-watched it and honestly, the point the episode makes is even more relevant now than it was when it was originally filmed.
