I hated Lindy so much when I first watched this. Not only the childishness and the self-entitlement, but the coldness of her character when she caused Ricky to die to save herself. Just rewatching it makes my blood boil. I just wanna slap that smug stuck up look off of her face when she's looking down at the doctor. She really is a perfect example why elitists are some of the worst kinds of people.

Ohhhhh we gonna meet parker :D

I barely even noticed there was timer weirdness in the last few reactions. all the syncing mess in the first season of Battlestar Galactica was very helpful in training me to sync by blurry images. I don't even need the timer anymore.

GillyBean

So at what point did everyone else notice they were all white people? Because I’m frustrated that I didn’t notice until the girl ignored the doctor and ruby when she finally sees them in person

Ben

The irony of you admiring Gatwa's mustache in this episode is that it was actually fake for the first few episodes he filmed as he had to shave it off for Sex Education. Also, will you be doing reactions to this episode with Paula once she's back?

Time Lord

Of course we will! That's always been the plan :) - Kat

Time Lord

I'm not gonna lie, I noticed it fairly early on. Though my mind was like, "Nooo no way. There's gotta be more than just these white kids." Then it was literally only the white kids. BLEGH. - Kat

For people-eating monsters the slugs were almost cute. The last like six minutes absolutely make this episode (not that it was bad until then) but this is now the second episode almost entirely without the Doctor, in a season that's already too short, like what's BBC doing?

GillyBean

I think I’ve just been so conditioned by how bad tv used to be, that it didn’t register sooner 😭 I’m so glad diversity in shows is so much better now. But also, this episode is only going to have that more subtle hint working in this particular time period. Hopefully in the future it would be wayyyy more obvious

Keith Goodnight

On an entirely separate tack from the obvious discussion topic of this episode... The Classic series had a monster once called simply the "Giant Gastropods" which were basically enormous slugs that would consume all life on a planet if left unchecked. Their design was (within budget/sfx limits of the time) not too different from the ones here. Their prior appearance is considered one of the worst episodes in Classic Who history, and it struck me as a plausible RTD thing to do to rehabilitate them with a revisit (much like Moffat did with the Nimon, another monster from a Classic series low point). It was obvious the monsters themselves weren't the topic of this episode, even before the final reveal, but I was somewhat disappointed to not get just a quick shout-out with the Doctor saying "Oh, I know those things, I've met them before."

Stephen Wray

they all looked orange to me a bit like all simpsons are yellow

Jennifer Diaz

Ncuti was unavailable for most of the first shooting block because Sex Education filming had massively overrun. If they hadn't decided to start without him, there's a good chance we wouldn't have had any Doctor Who this year at all. This is vastly preferable to that.

Mark Ten

I give them about a week in the forest. These privileged white idiots cant pee unless the Bubble tells them to. Survival skills = Zero! To survive they would need to work together - no way thats happening. There is no doubt in my mind that they're all going to die anyway and the Doctor knows it and still, with the white supremacist disdain they show him, he still wants to save them. Kat, when you do your next watch, pay close attention to the scenes with Lindy & The Doctor. She sees him the first time and immediately blocks him. She see him the 2nd time and doesnt realize he's the same person because ... you know, they all look alike. She almost says it and I went right by past it. She's offended because Ruby is in the same room with him. I kept missing that too. It offends her that a white girl and black man are in the same room! All the clues are there but RTD misdirects us. Amazing story & performances

Mark Ten

I feel sorry for the slugs now that their food source is extinct.

Mark Ten

I noticed it when she called up her friends but forgot about until she said that there were no smelly old people here - thats when I thought that there was a racist subtext but still had no idea that it was the main idea. Great misdirection

Peter Nolan

The thing that makes that most amazing is that because it was a Sex Education *over-run* and not the original plan, that suggests the original plan for Who was *not* to have Doctor-lite episodes. Which implies RTD basically had to turn the scripts around in record time to get them ready. I do wonder if next year we'll get told a couple of the episodes then were actually originally scripts for this season.

Time Lord

I rewatched it with my partner just a few hours after recording and the whole time was like, "Oh WOW." It's definitely a situation where I had to reflect on the white privilege aspect of it because a lot of those microaggressions were missed, but so blatantly there the whole time! - Kat

Eric Aitala

I'm pretty sure the actress was in Torchwood....

Nicole Mazza

I noticed right away, but wondered if it was bad casting choices, not plot-relevant. I just sort of rolled my eyes, said 'Oh well, that's TV these days', and moved on. But then the way Lindy immediately starting speaking to the Doctor vs Ruby when they show up on screen made me sit up and take notice.

Jack Bonner

Can you imagine if Donna were in this episode instead of Ruby. She would absolutely batter Lindy. 😂

Alisa Loudner

I didn't like her from the moment she blocked the Doctor then talked to Ruby so hateful. It was driving me crazy watching Kat feel sorry for her and call her sweet girl. Lol I'm a bit*** old woman though, very little sympathy for entitled, snotty people who can't even show basic consideration and the hate only grew with her sacrificing Ricky and of course the white supremacy. I noticed all her friends being white but I'm embarrassed I didn't clock the racism quicker.

Time Lord

Yeah, I was very much in the mindset of, "Wow, these terribly ignorant, aloof, children were left without a damn clue." Therefore I was very like, "Awe! Oh no!" And ugh omg lol

Time Lord

Omfg. Donna would have lost her damn mind!!! And rightfully so!

Enter the Matrixster

I find Russels best scripts to be when he's limited. Turn Left had limited time and no Tennant, Midnight had low budget and no Tate. I find he manages to turn his limits and use it as an opertunity to explore his abilities as a writer

tal goren

I kind of half-expected in the end, that the Doctor would say "screw it, I am saving those idiots anyway" and use the Tardis to transport their boat to a safer planet, without them ever realizing it was him. I mean, what's the point of being a sufficiently advance alien, if you won't go god-mode on a few primitives every once in a while?

Mark Ten

Hard to imagine that even the Doctor could find a civilization somewhere that would accept a boatload of people like these. In the end it was their choice go out into the jungle, it wasnt up to the Doctor to change their fate. I say, "Good luck & good riddance". Im taking up a collection to feed the slugs now that their food has gone extinct!

Jack Bonner

Oh 100%. I was at first in the mindset of , 'uhh, not a huge fan of these kinds of people.' But I thought, 'okay they don't know any better. I don't want them to die.' Then when she sacrificed Ricky to save her own skin, along with the comments she and the other woman made to the doctor (also along the way too), I really couldn't hate her any more at that point. 😂

Jack Bonner

Yeah I thought that as soon as I read something about it bringing light onto racism and elitism, I thought 'hang on a minute, I haven't seen a single person of colour in this episode, apart from the doctor.' I saw a comment that said that the slugs were the real heroes in this episode, which giving how snotty and entitled these people have revealed themselves to be throughout the episode, I couldn't have agreed more with that comment at that point. 😂

tal goren

If the Doctor would have stopped caring after they rejected him, I wouldn't have minded if he would have left them to die, but he didn't and that is what bothering me. The Doctor is not the type of person who would let people die just because they are too stupid to realize they need help. he is also not the type of person who would back off someone else business just because that someone doesn't want him to interfere (just ask Harriett Jones about that). so, as horrible as those people were, I have trouble believing that the Doctor would just let them die unless he really wanted to. As for where he could take them, there weren't that many people on that boat, he could have just dumped them in the same place he took the space babies. this could also count as karmic punishment, because that place definitely wasn't racist, so they would find themselves as a tiny minority in a place that would have no patience for their bullshit.

Mark Ten

IDK. Maybe some of the earlier Doctors would have tried to find a way around the moral dilemma, but I cant imagine any (except maybe 7) who would have resorted to wholesale kidnapping... and thats what it would have taken. But I can't see this Doctor ignoring consent. The Doctor persuades, he reasons with people, he doesnt force them. And this Doctor clearly requires consent. I do remember previous Doctors like 6 and even 10 & 12 who insisted that he needed permission of the leader(s) before acting on their behalf and the tall blonde guy had declared himself leader of his tribe and he was totally against the Doctor acting. One more point. What would have happened if these people were let lose in the near infinite spaces of the Tardis where there are food machines and bedrooms and swimming pools and gardens and all sorts of forgotten goodies we dont even know about? The Doctor would never get them to leave! He'd never find them all after they scattered!
