Such a beautiful episode ending moment, and I love the great score from Bear McCreary there.

Troy Convers

James Remar in anything automatically makes that thing better. Fans of 'Dexter' know what I mean.

Troy Convers

Now you're seeing how instrumental Dee is in this series. This series though....

RIPBriggs

We didn't get any new Cylons since Sharon... *Simon has entered the chat* Lol...

Troy Convers

Let's be honest though; TNG is a little TOO touchy feely and a bit wooden where everyone gets along EVERY episode. The more you think about it and the older you get, the more you realise that it's actually a little unrealistic . BUT, this ep is very realistic because they are a big family, warts and all, who do dumb shit for no discernable reasons. And we do get our family settling their differences for the greater good. At least we're getting the 'Days of our lives' tearful reunion, and a great feel good moment, enen if the flaws in the writing start to show next ep. The feels after this two parter though ....

Andrew Mortimer

paula getting annoyed at humans behaving like humans :)

Troy Convers

Like I've said before: this ain't grandma TNG...😂

Mike Connaghan

I could work on this to expand it or make more sense, but that seems like a lot of work on my part.

Mike Connaghan

I think I could get away with this if I claimed it had to do with spoilers or something, but that would be a lie. Or would it?! Yes, it would. As far as you know.

bakamitai

Even this show needs a hopeful ending now and then, at the end of the day (according to Fantine). But you're right, communication is key, and sometimes it's so hard. Especially with social media these days, which seems to be more about screaming at other people than listening to them.

Melissa Miller

You are going to hate everyone. Lol people are messy, this is realistic.

John

When Col. Tigh is the one saying "calm down" you know it's bad. This definitely ain't Star Trek. It's not one big happy family full of selfless heroes. Real people, full of flaws.

Matthew McKinnon-Gray

I wouldn’t blame you for taking breaks. This show can get a bit rough.

John

Well said. Trek was always a hopeful vision of what humanity could aspire to be. BSG is looking at humanity at it's worst, warts and all. Even good people have flaws and get caught up in their own emotions.

John

Yup. She's infuriated by infuriating behavior. Mission accomplished, RDM.

Jonathan

I think a lot of the "stupid" decision-making is because the characters don't have our perspective. Like Helo had no idea Roslin was president, and Starbuck had no idea Adama got shot. Roslin has no idea Cylons can have human emotions - her only interaction was with Leoben who was a self-confessed saboteur trying to mess with their heads. And Adama is REALLY struggling with being shot. He is not fine. Tigh having to help him up stairs, half the time he's clutching his chest when moving. He's not at his best right now.

Derek Orr

How can it be too touchy feely and too wooden? One kinda excludes the other. Regardless, TNG is VERY realistic for 24th century humans, we need to evolve like that if we are going to make it to the stars. TNG is competency porn, its humans that are more advanced than us in ways beyond just technology. Imagine talking to a regular someone from 400 years ago about social progressive issues or something else not technology related….it would be like talking to people who sound and communicate and interact VERY differently in 2024 vs 1624. Same holds true for TNG. BSG is 20th/21st century humans who have technology that in some specific areas is far more advanced…FTL drives and AI and in all other ways technology that is almost exactly like our real world. So its us divided into our tribal countries and groups…or colonies in BSG …and trying to process the end times….yes they use the lens of 9/11 and thats an important perspective. However, far too often (and respectfully, this is usually Americans) have a skewed perspective on scale. 9/11 was horrible but this is full on world war 3 all out nuclear war end times apocalypse. Everywhere on earth is nuked wasteland and we are down to a handful of people floating in a rag tag fleet of civilian ships from all countries and groups, protected by a single aircraft carrier navy ship…..shits going to be EXTRA ugly and messy and nasty. If anything BSG is unrealistic in how together things still are with order and government etc ….this is far far far worse than a nasty terrorist attack that killed a few thousand and destroyed some landmark buildings.

Ben Chan

Speaking of not communicating, you'd think Starbuck would want to let them know about the Cylon she saw on Caprica, esp since she knows from Boomer that there are copies. I get there's a lot going on, but even a line about her offering a description would've been enough to show *someone* doing what they were supposed to this episode. :p

Nolan

"Why is Adama behaving this way?!" Well, how many times in this episode did he talk about loyalty? He assigned that awful CAG because he was loyal. He distanced himself from the people that left the fleet because they turned against him. In the span of ONE SINGLE DAY, nearly everyone Adama cared for and trusted betrayed him. Roslin by sending Starbuck after the arrow, Starbuck for going, Lee for choosing the President, Boomer frakking SHOT him. 4 betrayals in one day, the last being a super traumatic experience, yeah, the man is struggling with PTSD. Plus he wakes up, his son, and the President are both gone, he can't talk to them. Boomers dead, he can't talk to her for closure... Adama is doing his best with what he has, honestly. As for Roslin, you have to remember, her driving motivation is to save humanity before she dies. She is under constant, ticking pressure. A Cylon walking on to her ship, knowing about Earth, their last refuge? She's not risking humanity's survival. And lets not forget, these people are still only mere months out from everything they've ever known being wiped out in nuclear fire and radiation. Their loss, trauma, pain are still pretty fresh, not even counting the trauma they've gotten since. Much like after 9/11 the hate for "The Enemy," the suspicious, the racism, is high, motivated by fear, ignorance and pain. This show was made during the days when wearing a turban into an airport got you flagged. And it was normally rational, caring people doing that stuff too. Battlestar Galactica is not about rational people problem solving their way out of conflict, it's about rational people navigating their overwhelming emotional based responses and baises.

In my "head canon" - the struggles the characters (specifically regarding making choices and communication) are what makes a future society like the ones depicted in TNG possible. My Jewish friend once posed an interesting query to er spiritual teacher, she asked him what would be the "right thing to do" if you were standing in a Nazi concentration camp and were asked to give someone up, should you take their place and die in their stead or give them up? The answer he gave her was completely different from what she expected - he said "in order to know how you should act righteously in times of crisis, you have to practice when it's easy". In a sense, BSG represented those "times of crisis" whereas TNG represents those "times of peace". It is much easier to follow the right path and make correct decisions when your whole environment is supportive of such actions. I don't like the term "this is just how people are" - because, Paula, you are right, healthy people communicate and kind people act with other people's intentions in mind - but when you are thrust into a state of war, even while taking some "R & R" it can be very difficult to be courteous and communicative. In that respect, this show is so so important, especially these days, as it demonstrates just how hard it is, in the heat of the moment, during times of crisis, to keep a level head and do the right thing. that's why Adama's arc this episode is just so strong.

Ashtara Levin

Fun Fact (though I can't remember where I read it - so "fun fact with a grain of salt) - "Agathon" in greek means "The Good", as in the good samaritan, a dutiful person, and Helo was named such as a homage to the sacrifice he made in the mini-series. Knowing that though, you can actually see it in the show - Karl "Helo" Agathon will *always* do what is right. And I absolutely love him for it.

Jonathan

Imagine if Adama HAD been talking to Doc Cottle. Just gets to the end of his monologue about betrayal and the doc's like "pull yourself together, idiot" and blows smoke in his face.

Troy Convers

How can TNG be very accurate for 24th century humans when we don't know the future? History shows many periods where humanity regressed. Add to that, I'd bet dollar pounds that an educated person from 300 years ago would look at now and not be that surprised at how people are still being horrible to each other. We as a species haven't progressed anywhere near as much a you'd think.

Troy Convers

Yeah, the plundering of Greek mythology without explanation as to WHY they know it is pretty jarring; but then the whole religious side of the BSG lore is just cut and pasted from elsewhere, like the ’13 colonies' schtick.

Ann & Alex Taylor

A lot of theology in the original 1970s Battlestar Galactica was actually Mormon beliefs, redressed as sci-fi. Some (but not all) of which carries over to this version.

Ann & Alex Taylor

Remember Ronald D Moore started as a script-writer for TNG, but found that his ideas were often squashed for either having too much conflict, or just being too radically structured. I think the level of conflict in BSG reflects his frustration with the Trek franchise by the time his stint on Voyager was over.

Mike Connaghan

(1) Are you familiar with the 1933 movie "King Kong"? This may not help. (2) I blame society.

Troy Convers

Sorry, should have made it clear I meant the original series (BOS) was the basis for this. I also eyeroll at ehy noone does at least a throwaway line as to why Lee's call sign is named after a god.

Karl Ward

Slaps forehead, oh well that only took me 20 years to figure out!!

A couple of interesting BTS regarding this episode. I’ll split them: 1. The network was (bizarrely at this point, if you ask me) pleading with the producers to cut it with all the serialization, because serialization was still very unusual on network/basic cable TV outside of soaps. They wanted the show to level-set (get into a spot where they could “hit the reset button” each episode) so that (they felt) people could dip in and BSG would gain new viewers. (They later found that BSG rerun marathons timed around premieres became insanely popular — especially with owners of them newfangled DVR’s — but at this point, if you wanted to catch up, you literally couldn’t, since DVD’s weren’t being released until after the next season began to air. For non-serialized shows, this made sense: they could time previous-season DVD releases with the end of a season for marketing. For a serialized show, it meant you could never catch up.) Anyway, the producers reached a deal with the network: they’d “wrap up” the serialized storyline that began with “33” with this two-parter. Then, after the next episode, they’d shift to a story-of-the-week format “for a while”, before returning to “lighter serialization” later on. So, in the writer’s room, they treated this two-parter as the Season 1 finale. But the “story-of-the-week format” idea was more honored in the breach than the observance. You may not even notice it, since character development and placement of characters on the chess board continues—it’s just not so much ongoing plot threads. In one case, the network even swapped two episodes for some reason, as they often do for non-serialized shows (though with enough notice that the team was able to mostly re-edit around continuity errors by swapping some shots between episodes). But I think even if it’s not _really_ a “story of the week” format—there are some things coming up that have *huge* ongoing implications—I think you’ll notice you do get a bit more breathing room for the next part of S2.

2. This one has to do with Roslin’s ordering Sharon be put out the airlock after promising she wouldn’t. Ronald D. Moore says that Mary McDonnell *really* didn’t like this, and complained it wasn’t true to the character. But he says he told her a president is made president to make the tough choices the people who elected her wouldn’t. He also pointed out that she was beginning to accept herself as a religious figure in the Fleet, and the appearance of another incarnation of the Cylon who shot Adama was the last thing she needed at that moment—until Sharon mentioned the Tomb and then Elosha told her about prophecy speaking of a “lower demon” helping the chosen leader. He told her Roslin-the-person wasn’t doing these things, not really, it was the President/Dying Leader, and Roslin sometimes had to step aside and make choices that, in some sense, she disagreed with in her private capacity. It’s very much a defining moment for Roslin, as she find herself having to make choices she finds increasingly repugnant.
