So disappointed, the tubi app removed Dwarf. I guess I'll have to get Britbox.

TuneIntoSanityFM

I watched your expressions when Rimmer licked that envelope. Kat's instincts knew something was up right there!

Jakob1978

I can understand your apprehension, this is such a big change in style, but I think you’ll enjoy most of the eps to come. There’s some incredibly good stuff still in this series (the next ep is a very good one imo) Although I do think this is the series that has the most amount of jokes that have aged badly and that you just have to squirm through. Thankfully from what I remember, after this series that almost entirely disappears.

Troy Convers

Man, did the POTUS joke age badly. Unfortunately. 😑

Troy Convers

The Gideon's bible joke was ripped from a Bill Hicks routine. RIP Bill, you are sorely missed.

Raven Stromdans

I think what turned me off about this series was two-fold - I didn't like the prison sentence premise and I didn't like that Rimmer was alive again (which sounds strangely mean to admit, but there it is). Weirdly, I also echo the Gals' misgivings about the size of the cast after a fashion; I genuinely feel as though the show always worked better focusing on our main cast without getting too bogged down with extra characters, but now we even have too many *main* characters, much less background characters for the episodes. As much as there is the odd decent bit in this season, I am honestly looking forward to getting past it. In the meantime, Keep Calm and Smeg on, Gallifrey Gals! Mr. Flibble and I will be here smoking a kipper and licking envelopes for early Yuletide cards...Mr. Flibble, do you feel weird? I feel... ~thud~

Don't worry good stuff ahead after some bumps in the road. I don't think any red dwarf is bad though

Makhiel

I've got Back in the Red as a single 1-hour-and-20-minutes episode, so this was real fun trying to sync up :D

In my original watch of red dwarf I only made it to season 6, so I am new to this season as well. my problem with it is that, as strange as it sounds, this plot broke my willing suspense of disbelief. Since the ship is millions of light years from earth, Lister and Kochanski are suddenly 7 years older and are accompanied by an entirely new life form and a robot from the future, there shouldn't have been any trial, only a hearing that was meant to figure out what the frak is going on.

Brodie Vickers

You briefly met Mr. Ackerman at the end there: the psychotic prison warden, and my favourite side-character from this series. Played by Graham McTavish, who has some decent credits to his name: The Hobbit, Rambo, Creed, and The Witcher.. just to name a few

Troy Convers

The next ep is one of the great RD eps, and very Whovian.

James Cluskey

New Red Dwarf isn't confirmed yet. The cast have been asked to pencil in dates but it hasn't been announced officially. Robert Llewellyn was just speculating when he said 3 episodes. It will more likely be another 90 minute special.

Troy Convers

Craig has a daily show on BBC Radio 6 Music, a Funk & Soul show he's presented since 2002, and yes he DJs in club's; he's a loon on stage, in the nicest way. Met him a few years ago when he was DJing in a Jazz club after a live act; he was with his wife and his bud Danny John-Jules, as they are thick as thieves in real life. I'll send his show a message on WhatsApp and see if you can get a shout-out on his show. 👌

Troy Convers

As Edward Ellington Humpty Hump Humphrey of Digital Underground would say, Cat's got a date with his left hand! 😂

John Veitch

The version with one of the flash-forwards in a different place, Hollister's recaps cut and alternative/longer versions of some of the other scenes?

Ross Nolan

Kochanski's "I WANT HIS BABIES!" was probably the stand out moment for the episode for me and I wish they let Chloë Annett have more big comedy moments. I also loved Rimmer being won over by "five whole buttons"!

Mark Ten

Ive said it before, series X is fun

Mab7373822

Season 8 is really interesting. There IS good in here - I really like Captain Hollister / Dennis the Donut Boy, and a few more great side characters you've yet to be properly introduced to. There is a BRILLIANT episode coming up too, and some good comedy farce across a few episodes. However, there is also a TERRIBLE episode coming up too, probably the first truly irredeemable episode of Red Dwarf. There is also some quite uncomfortable "humour" scattered about, that was dated even when the show was first released. Things most definitely do get better though. The last three seasons were mostly very enjoyable (with exceptions) and they allow us to look back at series' 6, 7, 8 and 9 as interesting experiments with the characters.

Mab7373822

The ending of this episode is really poor. The prison sexual-assault trope is being played for laughs and its just stupid.

GillyBean

I never got the end "joke". they stated before that the virus makes the user sexually attracted to members of the opposite sex. I mean i get it... but its also just incorrect. :( I think this is the weaker ep of this series. I remember really enjoying the rest of this series though. Loved the dance number though! Love any time DJJ gets to showcase his skills.

Troy Convers

Yep, Krytie TV is just fucking awful; easily the worst ep of the whole lot.

Chris Devlin

Definitely the episode where I realised I wasn't enjoying the show as much any more. I think a lot of the jokes just don't land as well, or are just a bit odd. Overall I think the show really struggles to develop any character outside of the main cast and I'm sorry to say I'm including Kochanski in that. Chloe Annette does a great job, but she's not given anything particularly interesting to do. She never gets any storylines, or scenes that really let her shine and she's frequently reduced to a love interest/sex object instead of an actual character. Which is a real shame as she had so much potential after series 7. It's as if there's nothing else they could think of to do with her. So yeah I'm still getting the same vibes from this series as I did every other time I've watched it. It's easily the weakest of the first 8 series. There are some good episodes here, but it's generally quite a weak series for me. Everything after this series is relatively new to me though. I watched the TV movie and Seasons IX and X (And thought they were alright), but I've not seen the last season or Promised Land, so I'll be interested in how they turn out.

pbaker

I think this episode was the point when most of us went ‘oh shit’. I carried on watching in hope that some of that old magic would still be there. I also spoke to someone at the fan convention 1998 who went to the recording of Cassandra so I got mildly spoiled.

Katrine Myra

Oh yeah, series VIII is absolutely the worst when it comes to poorly aged jokes (though in fairness, I did not enjoy them at the time either).

pbaker

X will be a treat!

Travis Boyle

Yeah it's awesome. Liked X,XI,XII and Promised Land a lot

pbaker

There are at least four nominations for worst one!

Katrine Myra

Well it's funny you should ask - the point at which I realized I was not going to enjoy this series as much the others was this exact episode. You've touched on some of the reasons why; the premise isn't as appealing (and doesn't make a lot of sense), the tone is off, the jokes are hit and miss, and downright offensive at worst. Kochanski is very different from the last series, which isn't a bad thing in itself, but considering how she was already very different from the Kochanski we'd seen before then, it leaves us having to get to know the character all over again. Nothing quit fits. There are some great things about this series - I personally love Captain Hollister, and some of the jokes are absolutely great. "The post arrived" is one of my favorite RD jokes, and there's another one of my favorites in an upcoming episode. But man. So much of it is just embarrasingly awkward. During the last episode I thought to myself "oh, the Dibbley family bit isn't that bad, I must have misremembered." I had, of course, forgotten that you get sooo much more of it in the third episode. I am not exaggerating when I say I had to look away from the screen several times, and at one point mute the audio as I was rewatching it now. And it's immediately followed by Cat's dream dancing sequence, which... I'm always glad to see Danny get to perform, but the way it was done was so utterly cringe-worthy. To end on a positive - it's clear to see what they were trying to do here with getting Rimmer and Lister isolated in a bunk room again, and it really does work. The banter and jokes flow freely and easily between them, and you can see they fall right back into the dynamic. But my gods, there must have been some other - any other - way of getting back to that!

Travis Boyle

The US president joke is sadly relevant today. In hindsight maybe it would have been cool to have female Holly with the main characters and Male Holly as the rebuilt computer for Red Dwarf. That way they could of had everyone back. There is a lot of stuff I liked in this Series but yes I can see some people just want to hang out with the main characters. I do like the Captain a lot though.

Jonathan

It's also a virus, so pouring it on Rimmer's shoulder should have done absolutely nothing. Red Dwarf has never been much for continuity but breaking the established logic of THE SAME EPISODE for the sake of a dumb prison sexual-assault joke was a low point.

Sebastian Bodine

It was something to see this all airing in real time when I was a kid. For me, I had a lot of fun with this series. I can't wait to see what you think of the fourth episode.

pbaker

Can’t believe this never occurred to me until you pointed it out.

John Veitch

Worse than Teema-wahvay?

Dieter Maggs

I love that the ending of this one completes the joke set up at the beginning of 8x1. Rimmer is not talking to Lister because he "poured a whole tube of it on me" and now we find out what he was talking about.

Lizbeth Marcs

The order after Series 8 (called 'The Dave' era by fans because that's the name of the channel these aired on): 2009 Mini-series (can be seen as three separate episodes or in one go as a movie) Series X (2012) Series XI (2016) Series XII (2017) Movie / special (2020) Honestly? I like all of The Dave era series (yes, even the mini-series which gets unwarranted hate, IMHO). Just a head's up: the 2009 mini-series is one of those with a bit of fridge brilliance and improves immensely with a second viewing once you figure out what they're actually doing. As for this episode — Yeaaaah. You're still clocking where I was at and am at for Series 8. It makes me laugh and there are some real high points (I think the next episode would be considered a classic if it was in a different season), but some of the humor is laddish. I think it's a case of over-correcting from Series 7 and there's your issue. And don't worry about Rimmer — they kind of speed up his character growth a bit so the Lister-Rimmer double-act can thrive. One bit of trivia: The commentary for this episode features THE ONLY intra-cast member squabble that you'll publicly hear in real time. Between Norman Lovett and (of all people) Chris Barrie. It was a case of Lovett complaining about how Holly was used during the first three episodes of Series 8 to the point it was taking over the commentary. Whatever was going on in that recording booth, Barrie decided to weaponize his impersonation skills in an effort to shut Lovett up by impersonating Lovett himself, which caused Lovett to hit back. On the upside, Lovett stopped his complaining, so there was that.

David Shadwell

To me, this season makes Hollister worse. It tries the same old formula of losers in space. He is basically just another Rimmer character but doing dumb stuff because the plot needs him to. Mac is great as always with what he was given but what he was given was an inconsistent, faded carbon-copy of a Rimmer template.

Troy Convers

No buildup needed for his character; it's all in the name. 😄
