This is where I feel that the writing unravels a bit. Sure, we get a nice feelgood moment where the BSG Brady Bunch kiss and make up and yes we get the signpost writing for Earth, but the religious lore is just a hotchpotch of pre-independance America (13 Colonies) Greek mythology (Apollo, Hera, colonies named after star signs) and Mormonism (12 colonies of man, Kolob/Kobol) with little to tie it together.

Troy Convers

Six doing a homage to Christine Keeler. 😍

Mark Chrisco

I think you were describing a planetarium. Sharon continues to fascinate. Did you notice how she offered no resistance when Adama said she needed to die as he strangled her.

Locoturbo

Pivotal episode for so many plot threads of the series. Also, big things coming up. Very excited!

tal goren

I didn't fall for the Sharon misdirection because I figured she was too smart for that. first, that guy had no reason to be sympathetic to her so it make sense she would figure he was trying to manipulate her. second, the entire fleet hated what she was, so killing the Adamas wouldn't have made her any safer.

Terrell Kirkman

Tricia Helfer is an amazing actress. If you want to see her do some more great work check her out as the mother of the devil in Lucifer.

Nolan

This is the end of a story arc started in the Season 1 finale. A big sign post of this is the pre-opening credits teaser; a number of vignettes set to music, much like the opening of Kobol's Last Gleaming Part 1. All the threads unleashed by that final two parter have been tied up. That was not Kat in the Raptor to Kobol. That was Racetrack. We met her in Kobol's Last Gleaming as well. She was the co-pilot to Boomer on the mission to nuke the Cylon Baseship, and was standing right next to her when Boomer shot Adama. She is another of Battlestar's tertiary characters they do such a good job keeping track of. Was Sharon saying: "And you ask yourself why?" because that's what Adama said to Boomer's dead body, or was it because of his speech at Galactica's decomissioning ceremony. "We never asked ourselves why? Why are we as a people worth saving?" I've always wondered. Fourteen episodes left in the season? I only counted 13. Ihope you aren't watching the movie Razor in S2. For a first time it really should be after Season 3. Or perhaps it's the webisode series that's between S2 and 3?

Troy Convers

Yeah, 'Razor' should be watched after the end of S2, same as 'The Resistance' webisodes. Both have big honking spoilers if you watch them before the end of S2

As amazing as Tricia Helfer is, just consider that she said this was her first "real" acting gig. She had previously done a few bit parts, and I think was a corpse on an episode of CSI. Prior to that she was a model, taking acting classes between trips all over for her modeling career.

Chris (darkwater)

Dressed Down Six is the one I want to go have a drink with. She seems fun and funny. :)

Chris (darkwater)

I'm not sure that Sharon has memory of shooting Adama. I think more likely her hesitation is more about how uncomfortable the conversation makes her. Remember, she is Sharon and feels everything the one on Galactica would have for Adama.

I'm glad you guys got a little bit of a break in the heavy episodes too. Don't worry about season 2 and filler episodes! I think there might be one, maybe two depending on your point of view but otherwise you are in for some very good stuff. Kat, don't worry about your comforter. I'm older than you guys and I still have an Animaniacs comforter that I refuse to give up because I loved the show in my 20s even though I was older than their target audience and I still love it today! Fans gotta fan, especially when the item is attached to the memory of a loved one.

Matthew McKinnon-Gray

Dress down Head!Six is my favourite Head!Six. I love that fact that she turns the chair around even while arguing that she’s just a delusion. When it cuts to Gail’s talking to himself you can see that the chair has actually been turned around, so she is clearly real even though she says she’s not. Love it!

Chris Devlin

This show is really good at building up tension and misery, then hitting the release valve just at the right point. This first third of the season is pretty grim and this episode is fantastic catharsis after that. Still got some of my favourite episodes in the whole show coming up this season.

John

It's a Planetarium.

John

There are extended versions of some of the episodes. Will the gals be watching the extended episodes or the broadcast versions?

Jonathan

Head Six going from naked to a sweatsuit is so good. The acting from both of them is great, Baltar really sells being SO DONE with her to suddenly totally off-balance again. And by the end of the episode she's got him back to being wrapped around her little finger.

Mike Connaghan

The thumbnail spoiled that you cried, an otherwise totally unforeseeable turn of events.

David Brown

I've been wondering if the list they are looking at has 'Pegasus' twice. The broadcast version and the extended version.

Ben Chan

Another great reaction/experience! I swear, the fact that this show is so emotional every episode is making us all trauma-bonded - It's simple brain chemistry. Glad to be here though - it only gets better (and also worse) from here!

Mark Chrisco

I think Sharon has limited access to Boomer's memories. Since she has developed her own identity, those memories don't elicit an emotional response from her.

Troy Convers

Buckle up if they watch the extended version. 😳

Troy Convers

That visual of Adama with the shotgun when he confronted Lee, together with his soft spoken delivery is just peak Lt. Castillo; gives me fucking chills every time.

Jonathan

She's also part of the side that programmed Boomer as a sleeper agent in the first place. She'd have known the plan was for one of her copies to get close to Adama and assassinate him from the beginning. It's only since she got given Boomer's memories that she feels differently. So the guilt about her people doing that to Boomer (and to Adama) must be pretty crushing.

Jonathan

I like that they gave Zarek a little moment with his friend after he got shot. You've got to appreciate a show that tries to humanise the villains. And of course, ANY return to Kobol continues to exact a cost in blood...

Trey Harris

You might find the podcast commentary tracks interesting, especially for Home Part 1 — this was co-showrunner David Eick’s first time as writer of an episode, and he and BSG reboot creator and co-showrunner Ronald D. Moore discussed exactly this. Basically, Eick said he felt a little adrift because he thought Moore was much better at inventing good lore the “show bible” was pretty sparse on. It consisted of stuff from the 70’s show, which was mostly, as you said, a mixture of Mormon apocrypha (the original BSG’s creator was Mormon), astrology (it was the 70’s) and American revolutionary stuff (it was developed during the 1976 Bicentennial celebrations). Moore added the Graeco-Roman connections because they actually had story and famous characters like Athena, Apollo, etc. Moore and Eick’s conversation is interesting because Eick basically says, “I just wrote it as stuff came to me like, ‘lower demon’—why not? And ‘Galleon Meadow’—an ancient spaceship, why not call it a Galleon? And I figured you [Moore] would clean it up in your read,” to which Moore replied something like “nah, it seemed fine, it didn’t break any of the arbitrary rules in my head, so why not?”

Trey Harris

I’m glad you’ve been warned about S2E10. From your discussion specifically mentioning ep 10, I take it you’ve been made aware of it. Still, I hope it won’t scare you away from the extended cut. There’s a *lot* of good stuff in the extended cut of “Pegasus”, and everyone involved with the episode said they consider it the definitive version. (As an adult survivor of a sexually abusive childhood, I hope this won’t come across as just a random cis man telling someone how they should deal with potential triggers. My husband read this and said he thought it was ok, but he’s a cis man too, so… yeah.) Anyway—yes, the episode (in both cuts) does include a sexual assault. But the difference is that the aired version is cut in a way that may make it _slightly_ ambiguous (IMO, if you’re not a survivor—I *don’t* think a survivor could read it ambiguously) whether the sexual assault happened or was interrupted before it could actually start. In the extended version there’s no question it happened. (But in my experience, I don’t think there’s necessarily much difference in the trauma depending on “what exactly” happened…) I just compared them (not fun, but I didn’t want to be writing from pure recollection): I wouldn’t say it’s more “explicit”, in terms of sexually explicit, but it is more explicit narratively that the assault does happen and isn’t just a fake-out or something. It’s about 15 seconds of new material. I think the actions of several characters and their lasting traumas as depicted in later episodes doesn’t make as much sense if you interpreted the assault as interrupted. So I think it robs the survivor of her own story a bit. But it IS fiction, not a recounting of an actual survivor’s story, so the same considerations we use for real people don’t necessarily apply. I’d personally hate for you to miss 12 minutes of fantastic additions (an entire act) because of 15 additional (but potentially triggering) seconds. But much, much more important is always, *always*, protecting one’s own mental health. I wonder if a mod might be able to give you cues or timecodes so you can watch the extended cut and look away for that entire scene? As a sexual abuse survivor myself, I definitely feel this sort of thing, too. Like, I couldn’t finish Birdman — I walked out of the cinema — because of that one scene which is just a character recounting their own childhood sexual abuse in the rawest, most honest way, before suddenly breaking and revealing it was just a performance of an old scripted monologue they were doing as a mindfuck of the other person. The experience of hearing a testimony that felt so personal and raw and true, and then — *pop* — was all a diegetic manipulation… For some reason, storytelling about abuse wrenches me, but if it’s honest and not gratuitous, I can watch it with my heart in my throat and maybe tears streaming down my face; but storytelling about someone misusing a trauma not their own to manipulate other characters — that just made me furious, and unable to even engage. (I’m told it’s otherwise a good film…)

Trey Harris

Oh, and just as an aside about what’s to come (no spoilers) — in the commentary track (which was done as a podcast _while_ the show was in production, right after the cut of each episode was finalized, so an interesting perspective!) the producers finished this episode with, “and that’s the end of Season 1 of Battlestar Galactica, hope you enjoyed it.” They really did treat this episode as the end of a story that had started all the way back with “33”. The “running from Cylons, with no clear objective, wondering when the Fleet will realize no one in power knows anything about Earth, if it even exists” part ends, and the “search for Earth” part begins…

Trey Harris

From the commentary track: in the script, Adama wasn’t supposed to have a gun, so the line, “Captain, put the gun down” was supposed to come across softer, more plaintively. But Eddie Olmos decided he wanted a gun, thinking it would be more impactful with the following embrace to play that line rougher. I think he was right.

Trey Harris

I hope they will, with the caveats I mentioned in my separate comment (ok, screed) below…

Trey Harris

Not just ‘a model’, an honest-to-goodness supermodel, one of the top in the world. Apparently, speaking of “real”, the version of Head Six in the sweats and ponytail was pretty much just Tricia being Tricia, the normal Head Six character was very different from her personal style. Both Tricia and Grace Park did such amazing jobs in inhabiting various incarnations of “the same” Cylon, somehow making you believe they’re more than clones but not quite completely different individuals, either. I know you could pick out which version of “their” Cylon they were playing, even completely out of context, which is astounding to me.

Jack Rogers

I love this show so much, a friend at Uni got me to watch it, (she loved Starbuck so much she actually got a pilot license) but anyway, I love it so much, but I also know the pain you are going to go through in later seaons and I am terrified for you.

Troy Convers

And suddenly the religious lore I have in my writing doesn't seem so bad. 😄

Troy Convers

If they'd given him a sword just to ram the 'bushido' connection together, I probably would have fainted.
