Fun fact, Sutekh is voiced by the same actor who did the voice in the pyramids of mars for the 4th doctor. Plus he also voiced the Beast in 10s Satans pit two parter Edited. Guy is called Gabriel Woolf, he's 91 years old

I love that after all this time watching Doctor Who, Paula still gets a kick out of people asking 'Doctor Who?' :)

Rowan Talmage

Completely agree with Paula on how the whole Susan/Sutekh thing was setup.

I think it worked for me Paula, but I do get where you're coming from. I did have to look up Sutekh to find out more about him. But the eeriness took me right back to Toby and The Beast. Right back to when I was 10, that intrigue and that fascination with the beyond. This whole idea of something being 'before the universe' or 'outside the universe'.' It got me so excited and intrigued. This episode absolutely blew me away, though. I'm so fascinated by the idea of Sutekh, being this being who was banished to the void for eons. Really cool overall for me! But it is all very ambitious and it needed to be more spread out. I think it could still work. It's just very ambitious, like I say. So we'll see. 🙂

I get what's happening. RTD has this writing style to start with a bunch of threads that come together in the end, it originally was extremely tight stories with cast we have grown attached to, except this season is more loose if that makes sense, all these threads are loose, the misdirection feels less earned and the big bad is only recognisable to those who are in the know, it doesn't stand fully on its own even though it's a good story and Sutekh is a good villain, Its almost perfect for me, but I can see why it might fall a little short

The discussion at the end of this reaction makes me want to go and re-watch your reactions to The Impossible Planet, The Satan Pit, Rose, Dark Water, and Spearhead From Space!

Gabriel Woolf was the Voice of Sutekh in 1975 - he was also the voice of the beast/Satan in the Satan Pit. 91 years old! Sutekh was an amazing villain. He was trapped in a chair wearing a cloak & helmet so all you saw were his glowing eyes, but his voice was so eerie & chilling. Wonderful performance. Still gives me chills. Under the helmet he looks like a jackal and his people were the inspiration for the Egyptian deities. Also one of the best Sarah Jane stories This was a gift to classic Who fans. It probably wasnt handled the best for new Whovians (if RTD mentioned his name earlier it would have killed the surprise) , but if there was ever a classic Who monster that I wanted to see but never believed they'd bring back, it was Sutekh. My first Doctor was Tom Baker and this was my favorite story of that era. I guarantee that people in the know jumped out of their seats at the reveal. I did... and Im too old to jump much anymore

Mark Ten

The entire episode was a set up for the final episode

I think RTD was aware of the fact that we didn't see enough of this pantheon because he add a few more familiar names to the list at the end (honestly, kind of surprise he didn't add Zellin as the god of dreams), but this brings us back to the problem of this revelation not being quite as accessible to new viewers .

It's a Ghost.

I always love your thoughtful and genuine reactions and discussion, which is why I just joined your Patreon! As someone who has never seen the original Sutekh episodes but was aware of the name, I was excited when they revealed it was him. But I also wondered how people who had never heard of Sutekh before would react. I really enjoyed this episode, and I'm cautiously optimistic how it will end. There still seems to be so many questions remaining! My guess is Mrs. Flood is a harbinger for another god, and Ruby is related to this other god in some way. Also, Sutekh seems rather full of himself. Speaking of himself, he says that, "the god of all gods has returned," but I suspect the Doctor and Ruby and friends might show him otherwise in the next episode.

You'd have fun watching "Pyramids of Mars" as a Classic reaction during the coming off-season. Meanwhile, this could be the main thing you need to know about Sutekh: we saw the Fourth Doctor angry several times. We saw him worried. We saw him regretful. Mostly though, we saw him brash and confident. Facing Sutekh was the only time we saw the Fourth Doctor terrified.

Nicole Mazza

Yeah, it felt to me like a floundering mess. (And I really WANTED to like it, especially as a long-time fan of Sutekh) Hoping part 2 fixes a lot of part 1's issues for me.

Nicole Mazza

I wish I liked the reveal more, but a) I'd already heard fandom theories it was Sutekh going in (though I had high hopes for Omega instead, as he's my all-time fave) and b) I don't know, the reveal just felt sloppy to me. (And I say this as a super-fan of 'Pyramids of Mars'). It just fell flat for me, like it needed a better edit. Oh well. :(

Brodie Vickers

Pyramids of Mars, arguably the best story from Tom Baker's run. Sutekh was a right little menace, one or two highlight's from him https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06yKM2rubaw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a13IXD2xG4g Very pleased to see Gabriel Woolf return, for a while now I've actually known him best as Inspector Parker in 'Lord Peter Wimsey', completely forgot about his 'WHO' history until someone recently mentioned it😄Personally, this series has been very hit-and-miss for me. Until now Ep. 3 has been the only episode until now, that I could confidently say I actually liked, that's just my opinion though. 🤞that the finale will be just as good..

Aaron Funnell

I commented on the Discord that i thought RTD did a good job making the reveal work for people who primarily know the new series but having watched it again for this reaction, and hearing your post-episode talk, I've done a 180 on that opinion. In his original run as showrunner RTD was really great at maintaining the balance of keeping things new viewer friendly while including some fanservice. The episode Dalek from the Eccleston series is a great example of this. Rise of the Cybermen too. The Master's return in Utopia. I agree with Paula on the issue here. I've watched the majority of the classic series so I know who Sutekh is. The big reveal about the name is just kind of meaningless. The Master was hinted at prior to Utopia, whether that was in Gridlock or just generally tslking about the Time Lords. Davros was obliquely mentioned in Dalek before showing up 3 series later where a new audience understood that the daleks had a creator. Even the cybermen were visually referred to a year before they properly arrived onscreen. Sutekh has not been mentioned once, even in a veiled manner, on screen since Pyramids of Mars Part Four which aired in 1975.

Eric Aitala

I think its going to tie together in a way folks might not expect.

Mark Ten

No argument from me, but I just cant imagine how RTD could have introduced Sutekh lore earlier without giving it all away... RTD really was concentrating on the big reveal. I guess this entire episode is really a set up for the next one which is where we will get lore. I was really expecting it to be Omega since he created Tardis technology but I think Sutekh is a better villain. The only reason I suspected Sutekh was the Doctor showing Ruby the destroyed Earth earlier in the season like he did with Sarah Jane in Pyramids.

Nicole Mazza

Kinda hate that they made Sutekh a god in this iteration. I mean, yes, in reality he's a Kemetic/Egyptian deity (Set), but in the show he was just an alien. A powerful one, but not a god.

This article may help.

Michael Hingston

The short version is Sutekh was banished back to the time tunnel he came from to 'age to death' and this episode seems to suggest he sidestepped into the void which touched the opposite side of the edge of the universe from Wild Blue Yonder which brought it into close contact with the TARDIS. Combining that with the salt thing it was I guess easy for him to latch onto it and take over. That was the first point at which it started misbehaving and frankly I think the HADS response in that episode was to Sutekh, not the nothing creatures.
