Oh hai, Xena! Now finally I can talk about how fucking great Lucy Lawless is in BSG; she's a manipulative bitch on a par with Six, and not the last of the shocks we will see as more Cylons are unveiled. Incidentally, Lawless was in a fabulous and completely forgotten series called Spartacus: Blood and Sand, a New Zealand series which would be great to react to; bloody, brutal...and so spicy I think that steam would be pouring out of lil' ol' Paula's ears! 😂

Troy Convers

And of course, THE OG BSG THEME! O7 O7 O7 ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Troy Convers

Whatever else you can say about Tigh, he's not scared of anyone and he will defend Lady McTigh with his life, no matter how misguided that may seem to us. To use a British term, he's a 'Double hard Bastard'.

Troy Convers

And now we're seeing more of how Dee is a a deep, deep well. The quiet ones are the strongest. And the hardest to gauge. She's an old soul...

RIPBriggs

That silly Disney tune was the original theme song, lol...!

Stephen Wray

The music played at the end of the documentary is the original theme tune

Locoturbo

Yessssss! Gotta love Lucy Lawless and with that hairstyle OMG. She might be my favorite. Every time I watch this episode I feel more like - how could she play this role so perfectly? Such a great episode.

Karl Ward

And the Cylons have their own cinema! What else do they watch???

Lizbeth Marcs

Ooooooh, one of my favorite episodes in S2. Lucy Lawless always gives any episode she's in an automatic +10, IMHO.

Jonathan

Tigh's reaction to being held at gunpoint is perfect. When Apollo put a gun to his head during the coup he looked scared. Here you get the impression he really would take a bullet for what happened on the Gideon. The show is so good at showing you characters at their worst, then at their best. And incidentally when Tigh is getting ready to fly in the raptor, he's the only one not wearing a spacesuit. If you notice Raptor pilots and co-pilots always wear them as a precaution even though the cabin can be pressurised to carry passengers. So he would've been the only one killed if the cabin vented to space.

Troy Convers

Have you seen Spartacus: Blood and Sand?

Chris Devlin

Everyone forgets about Simon. lol I love the end to this episode. D'Anna is fantastic and easily one of the best characters in the whole show.

Chris Devlin

Probably big fans of the Terminator franchise. Though they don't really like the endings. I can picture a Centurion running a concession stand, with a little hat. Dishing out popcorn and drinks.

Nolan

First time we see a lot of characters first names. Anastasia, Felix, Margaret (Racetrack), Louanne. Now THIS is a lighter episode. Characters were *smiling* even. And since Helo's back on the ship, the show is no longer keeping track of time. I suspect a couple weeks to a month, month and a half have passed since the last episode.

Troy Convers

UK-wise, It was on Netflix, now it's on Prime.

Mark Chrisco

I think the Cylons are aware of the fleet's tactics, but they also wanted to know the dynamics of the crew. As for Sharon, she said she was not wired into the Cylon net, so the others had no idea what was happening to her. I also understand the need to look the other way for important crewmembers and their potential crimes. That said, Cally should be out of the brig very soon, hero or villain?

Jack Rogers

Their culture was too busy making AI beings and Faster Than Light travel to make cameras with zoom.

Ben Chan

We've seen during press conferences that small hand-held cameras exist, but they (the show) clearly wanted to use larger camcorder cameras to be more intrusive during the scenes. And it must have been a different D'Anna in the theater - if she had a way to sneak away, there wouldn't have been any point in using the raiders to transmit the data, she could've just brought the tapes herself. One question is, when D'Anna was originally broadcasting the footage of the massacre, was her original intent to create chaos within the fleet and the opportunity to film on Galactica a fortunate development that made her switch tactics, or did she do that somehow anticipating that her broadcast would get her on board the Galactica?

Mike Yocom

Random Six: I'll have a large tub of popcorn and a large soda. Centurion: By your command.

bakamitai

I'm a fan of the original theme, probably because it reminds me of my childhood. I grew up in a time of innocent, earnest hope for the future. I ate up the original series with its simple message: better things are out there if you only fight for them.

Trey Harris

Don’t worry, they’ll eventually explain more about how Cylon memory and consciousness works insofar as plot-driven stuff matters. There’s stories coming up soon that will make lots of things clearer. I was on an email listserv (anybody remember those?) about BSG fan theories. Thanks to Gmail, I can share my speculation spoiler-free from September 2005 after seeing this episode (it’s so bizarre reading back my own speculation! And little-kid me thought he understood Zen, how cute lol): “So, from: a) Sharon’s memories splitting at least twice (nevermind all the ‘we love you Sharon’ ones w/Kat [sic, Racetrack] on the BaseStar); b) the Cinema Sharon saying “Oh look, I’m still alive” and c) how Cinema D’Anna speaks, I think it’s prolly kind of like the Zen view of souls: The memory and conscience [sic, ‘consciousness’] of every Sharon, Leoben, Simon, Doral, D’Anna or Six Cylon comes from a shared pool, and when they return (a body dies) they return to the pool. So depending on how recently a given body was cloned or birthed or whatever, they’ll feel more individualized or not? I think maybe Cinema D’Anna basically thinks she IS Fleet D’Anna. But Cinema Sharon thinks she’s Fleet Sharon a LOT more than Fleet Sharon thinks she’s Cinema Sharon; Fleet Sharon’s basically a fully separate, barely-Cylon person now. But what about Original Recipe Sharon? Our new Fleet Sharon (who was Caprica Sharon aka Helo’s Sharon) had Original Recipe Sharon’s memories. She knew Helo and Chief Tirol [sic Tyrol]. Original Recipe Sharon went from Galactica to Caprica with Helo, left Helo behind and returned to Galactica with Baltar. She didn’t die, so no chance to swap her out, right? So I’m guessing when they’re near a BaseStar, they basically have WiFi and can re-sync (if they want to, or involuntarily?). Then when they jump away, they split and have to re-merge later.” Some of that was VERY wrong, some was almost right…

Firefly24601

The reaction when Apollo almost drops his towel.... 😆

Nolan

Oh, Starbuck, you didn't need to go all the way back to Caprica, the Arrow of Apollo was RIGHT there all along!

Nolan

I'm not sure offhand how advanced cameraswere back at time of filming, but I suspect the reason for the larger cameras is that they were also actually capturing footage. The 'in-universe' footage throughout the episode was actually shot by Lawless and her co-star as they filmed.

Nolan

A note on the production of this episode and the intrusiveness of the cameras - a note I'm making now because I've known it so long I didn't think about it as being potentially unknown to new viewers - but the 'in-universe footage we see as part of what D'anna is filming was actually what was filmed by Lawless and her Co-star on set as they acted and had the studio cameras rolling. Anytime you see either of those two holding a camera in shot, it's recording. Any time you see the camera footage, it's what they filmed while the scene was playing out and filmed around them. This also likely explains why the cameras were so intrusive, and not filmed wide angled and zoomed: in order to get the feel of a documentarian trying to capture as much of the action as possible, the actors and their cameras had to move around a lot. Filming from a distance would mean higher risk of capturing actual film crew and equipment, rendering the footage unusable in editing. Hence the tight focuses and up close shooting style, to obtain the maximum amout of usable footage as they could get. This episode represents the truest version of RDMs vision for the series, a space show presenting itself as so realistic, it was a filmed documentary.

Troy Convers

So how would Helo Sharon know Adama said 'Why' in the morgue when he was talking to Chief Sharon's corpse, and alone? Remember, she answered the question on Kobol when Adana tried to kill her.

Ben Chan

Good point. That would be fun if true.(would there be a union issue?)

LogicSequence

As others' have said that silly music at the end was the Battlestar Galactica Original Series theme music, but in the modern series canon it's the Colonial National Anthem, their version of the Star Spangled Banner. It's not used often in the show, but when it is it's often used to tie in emotional moments with the overall BSG fandom. Someone's already probably posted this, but here's a quick breakdown of the Cylons you know: Model #1 - Unknown Model #2 - Leoben Conoy (Arms Dealer) Model #3 - D'Anna Biers (Reporter) Model #4 - Simon O'Neill (Doctor) Model #5 - Aaron Doral (Public Relations Guy) Model #6 - Six, Head-Six, Shelly Godfrey Model #7 - Unknown Model #8 - Sharon Valerii (Boomer), Sharon Valerii (Helo's Sharon/pregnant) Model #9 - Unknown Model #10 - Unknown Model #11 - Unknown Model #12 - Unknown

Carrie Schwent

The "why" she is responding to isn't what Adama said to the corpse. I believe that she is responding to him asking why in his speech during the decommissioning ceremony in the mini series.

Carrie Schwent

I have, she's excellent in it! Though she will always be Xena first for me though. I love this actress ❤️.

Carrie Schwent

I absolutely loved that series! It is most definitely spicy!

Lizbeth Marcs

Crap. I couldn't remember who Model #7 was and then I looked it up. Hahaha. I can't believe I forgot. They're going to DIE when they meet Model #1. I think I might've jumped up and down in excitement when we first met that model.

Lizbeth Marcs

I loved her character on "Parks and Recreation." She was hilarious as Ron Swanson's girlfriend and later third wife, breaking his string of "Tammys".

Trey Harris

An amusing thing from the commentary track given how annoyed y’all got with the cameraman: since they wanted to use the ‘documentary’ footage shot in the same scenes (mixing takes just didn’t work since BSG was a pretty loose show with ad-libs and free movement), they used an actual documentary cameraman instead of an actor. Still, I think the cameraman probably got in closer than he would otherwise to try to avoid catching crew and equipment in the background, since shots were blocked for the ‘real’ camera, not the ‘documentary’ camera.

Trey Harris

The way Number 1 is ‘discovered’ by the humans is definitely the funniest Cylon reveal of the show — and might be in the running for funniest single moment in the show.

Trey Harris

Oops, I missed your comment and said more or less the same thing. The commentary validates what you said.

John

53:06 "They don't share memories in real time." Correct. They're not networked like the Borg. When one is killed it's consciousness and memories are uploaded to be downloaded into another body. At that point those memories are accessible to the others (not sure if that's just across each model or all Cylons). It's not 100% consistent. Boomer and Caprica Sharon both had Boomer's memories of Boomer and Chief Tyrol being together even though Caprica Sharon was on Caprica with Helo before Boomer was killed. Maybe that's writing, or maybe it's just in some cases it can be done, since Caprica Sharon was set up to meet Helo, she would have needed all of Boomer's memories to maintain her cover.

John

It's unlikely the D'anna at the end with the Cylons was the same one on Galactica. How'd she leave and return to Caprica? This was a planned reconnaissance mission. The D'anna on Caprica would have known they sent two raiders to relay the footage back.

Trey Harris

I agree generally—it seems like what the show’s trying to tell us is the answer. But still — it’s not a perfect explanation. How did the Cinema Cylons get the final cut (or any footage shot after the Raiders were destroyed, for that matter), or know it was shown throughout the Fleet? Either the Raiders were cover for some other spacecraft (a transmitting probe or whatnot) to arrive and go into stealth mode so it could transmit the video later, or the Raiders didn’t actually have any part in getting the footage back and it happened by some other unexplained means? Or maybe a Raider jettisoned a data beacon for later retrieval once the Fleet jumped away. For all we know, the cinema scene could have happened weeks later.

Trey Harris

Well, when Original Boomer flew down to Caprica, left Helo, and brought Baltar back to Galactica, she would have been in range of TONS of Cylon BaseStars and other ships, so maybe that proximity allowed the Cylons to get a full download they could put into the Sharon that Helo met on Caprica. We have to assume they have some sort of internal transmitter that sends their memories home when they die. I mean, unless you think souls not only exist, and Cylons have them, but also they have harnessed some technology to catch them after a Cylon body’s death, without the Cylon body’s assistance…

John

Very possible. It makes sense they have the ability, whether or not they would use it all the time. And since Boomer was originally set up as a sleeper agent, she may have had special protocols for sending back her memories and experiences.

John

Good points. Galactica D'anna would have had to somehow send all the footage back, including the cut footage. It wasn't a case of them picking up on what was broadcast to the fleet. D'anna would have also had to have some way to get work back after the raider attack that the video was shown throughout the fleet. I still think there were multiple D'annas, just as there were multiple Sharons.
