the guy running the ship is not a freak he is a Edosian a race that only appears in the animated series for the 70s. also most of the conditions have been seen in other series. the main ones being the woman with the same injuries as Captain Pike from TOS episode the Menagerie and Anthony who looks like what Tom Paris and captain Janeway turned into in Threshold.

I know you guys have been enjoying the show for a while, but to me we are now heading into the "good stuff" of the show. I feel like, early on, they were viewing this show as a ship full of screw-ups doing unimportant things. The intro is sort of a giveaway for that vibe, where the Cerritos randomly crashes into things, flees from a large battle, etc. But where they eventually settled is more that the Cerritos is doing important work, but the kind that is unsung. They aren't "epic," (most of the time), but they are still doing good Starfleet work. And for the crew - there are reasons why they are on this ship in the positions they are in, but it's not because they're incompetent. By and large, they're all good at their jobs. And that is the show that I love and I'm confident you're really going to enjoy where this show goes from here.

Captain Ramsey is voiced by Toks Olagundoye who you've heard before as Nanefua in Steven Universe, and very shortly as Vex and Vax's stepmother in the Legend of Vox Machina. She's also the voice of Mrs. Beakley in the new DuckTales (woo-oo) and Mel Medarda in Arcane.

I love that the show doesn't just spend it's time being an endless joke-fest. The writers are exceptionally good at knowing when to crack a joke, how quick that joke should be, and when to move the characters and story forward. And I've said it before, but I'll say it again: on top of the excellent writing, the actors *really* make the show. They are all brilliant at being funny, engaging, and most of all, giving life to their characters. I'm not an actor (voice-only or otherwise), but I'd have to imagine that doing voice acting well can be quite challenging, considering you only have your voice to do all the work. These actors are the best!

BrightHeart

Only just realised the vulcan is Jennifer Hale, she has such a recognisable voice. Also Ramsey is voiced by Toks Olagundoye who was also Davana in Legend of Vox Machina and Nanefua in Steven Universe.

well thanks for deleting all my comments I wont be supporting you anymore

Hi there! I'm not sure what happened as I haven't gone through and deleted any comments today! Sometimes Patreon is really weird, but I promise that's not something I did! I went to our email notifications just now to see if I could see any previous comments (we get emails about them) and I don't have any other comment notifications from you except for this one! - Kat

I agree with other folks that this is where the show really starts being Just Good Star Trek. It's jokey, sure, but it's a love letter to Star Trek and that comes through in the scripts and stories.

What I really love about Lower Decks is that it shows the "working class" Starfleet. All the California class starships fall into that category, which is why this show is my second favorite Star Trek series (Deep Space 9 will always be my number one). This is the episode where you start to see the working class aspect and it only becomes a stronger throughline as the series goes on. Everyone really is competent (if sometimes a little goofy), and they are all good at their jobs. But most importantly, they all want to be there because they enjoy getting their hands a little dirty doing the unglamourous, but often important, work. It really speaks to my blue collar, union family roots, y'know?

R. Chang

What do you think the BSG episode they just watched was? Gotta be Pegasus, right? Plenty of stuff happens in that episode that could piss them off and it's got the big cliffhanger at the end.

Travis Boyle

Probably. Because they said if they hurry they could fit in another BSG episode into their viewing that day. Don't want to wait to see part 2.

tal goren

they are wearing the same clothes they wore when they watched "home part two" so I am guessing the annoying episode was part one.

Travis Boyle

Oh right. Final Cut they are wearing different clothes.

Ashtara Levin

I love Lower Decks' love for Voyager, I feel so gratified every time they reference it as among my Star Trek friends, I'm the only one who watched it..

Ashtara Levin

I'm so happy you guys love this show, and see the "trekiness" in it, I have had a hard time pitching it to my friends, some either don't like the pace and occasional "gore" (swear to god, the bat-eye things from the dog's mouth had me screaming the first time around..) and others feel it's just too reference heavy and don't find the appeal. Sharing the love I have for this show with you guys has been so heartwarming I awaite your Friday drops every week!

Travis Boyle

I really like how they reference The 70s Animated Series. The Captain of the ship's race was on the Animated Series in the form of Arex the helmsman of the Enterprise. Also like how the California class ships have the red, blue, or yellow strip around the saucer to tell what it's mission is.

I have to admit what I liked the most out of this episode? Jennifer Hale joins the Star Trek family. (She voices Lt. Durga.) There's a certain joy in having Commander Shepard in a Starfleet uniform.

The point that different people have different ambitions or levels of ambition resonates strongly with me. The problem with moving up the proverbial corporate ladder is that you might find yourself promoted right out of what you most enjoyed doing... for myself, I have never had much of a drive to manage other people's affairs; I want to work with the material and produce something (in my case, it's data and analysis) and to have to worry about six other people's problems and vacation requests and such would really detract from it all. And not everyone can be the top dog, so I don't see the point in trying to make people think that way when they may not even want to. That said, Mariner's position is a little more nuanced than just that, but we'll get into that later on. No spoilers, other than "expect character development." :)

MARK F JENKINS

Later thought: It was revealed in the DVD commentary for LDS season 1 that most of Tendi's lines in the cold open (when she's rapidly discussing how she built The Dog) were taken from test lines used in casting for voice actor Noël Wells-- her reading was funny enough that they wrote it into the script. So from this point on we can definitely say that the actors' performances are beginning to have influences on how the characters are written. :)

As someone who used to be a manager - heck, I even ran a small company for a while - and deliberately chose to move away from that, I also love this about Mariner. In my case, it turned out I had undiagnosed ADHD which ended up giving me health complications and partial disability, but even so: You could literally not pay me enough to go back into management. Lower Decks is genuinely my second favorite Star Trek show, after DS9 (sorry Paula). Glad you're enjoying it!
