Ngl, I loved the first half, dialog, fx, costume, music everything was awesome, but felt like I was cheated out of something. Ain’t no way her mother was in a full mage get-up pointing to a sign in the hopes cctv was there just to name her own daughter…

ButtyOh

Jeez this was a boring anticlimactic finale. I have much regret losing sleep staying up until midnight to watch it air If her mum's normal, why the snow? Why the dumb carol? And yeah I'm sure everyone who abandons their baby prances around in a silly cloak pointing at signs.

ButtyOh

I will give them the "memory" TARDIS though. it's from Tales From the TARDIS, where former doctors and companions sit around and talk about classic adventures (with clips)

Ben

With your point about how 13's catchphrase was 'Fam' and how 14 found a family with Donna is not really the same as talking about his actual family because when 13 said 'Fam' it was meant in a more cute, playful way, she did consider them family, but she never actually talked to them about her family - she never even told Yaz about being adopted, whereas, 15 told Ruby almost straight away because he found someone he could relate to with what he had just been through as 13, which is what 15 was getting at with that line. Also, thinking Mrs Flood is Clara is a bit silly, because if you remember, Clara can't age as her bodily processes have been stopped, so I think you may be over thinking that one!

Angelus-1701

I think there’s something else going on. The doctor did admit his memory from x-mas night changed so I’m thinking that Ruby’s mother was always normal but something else happened that night which resulted in the singing & snow coming through and so next season the doctor realises it and comes back for ruby so to figure it out

Mike

I'm with Kat about Russel setting it all up as this big epic reveal. He expects us to talk and speculate the mother's identity, the snow falling around Ruby, Maestro say Ruby is wrong. To have it all be nothing is very disappointing. I think it will be brought up again, but resolving that plot point in the next series I feel cheated.

Mike

I doubt Mrs Flood is Clara, unless Moff is going to write an explanation of how Clara is alive again and can age normally.

Myka Martinez

Or... Oooooooooor... Mrs. Flood could be Susan's Mother.... And River's daughter. Amy "Pond" "River" Song Mrs. "Flood" *Dun dun DUN!!!!* 😜

I would definitely class myself as a passive viewer, as I honestly don't really notice a lot of this stuff until I watch you guys react to it. (despite me being a film & tv graduate lol) While in the moment I just wanted to go along with it, there were definitely parts of me with the whole sign thing that went 'that was a tad bit of a stretch wasn't it?'. I do also agree that that scene with the woman and her baby was jarring in the way that it was suddenly cut to. I feel like they could have set it up a bit better, where the doctor maybe could have explained that they were going to that planet, or if maybe this woman was an old friend of his. Then the scene would have been better presented. Although I do understand that they were trying to get across how memory was dying as well as everything else, but like you guys mentioned (if you did, I can't remember aha), even that could have been better explained. I genuinely did love the episode and still really massively enjoyed it overall though. None of these opinions are in anyway a reflection my like/dislike of the episode, they were more individual things that could have been better thought out. But even then, saying that, I think it did mostly tie everything together really well. While I do think the whole thing of Ruby's mum being this 'ordinary' person sends a good message in how people don't have to be these 'God-like' figures to be amazing wonderful people, part of me sort of feels a little bit cheated. I could have that completely wrong. I mean I did hear a theory from The Confused Adipose (another whovian youtuber) that Ruby's mum might have been one of the disciples of the light from the two part Beast episode. So I was expecting something incredibly fascinating tbh, but I still think it works. I suppose I'm still just coming to terms with it as I only watched it the other night. I think parts of the execution were good, but I think maybe it can sometimes be the dialogue/monologues that may let it down in places. Now that you mention it, the 73 yards thing definitely fell short a little. I feel like it was slightly exploited, considering it's overall potential. I feel like it could have either teased something else later on for a future series or at least been finalised in a more meaningful way. But I do think the DNA test thing worked. Sutekh for me was awesome. A really cool antagonist overall. I think it would have been more interesting if there was maybe a credible link to The Beast from IP and TSP, but I suppose you wouldn't want to make it any more convoluted than it already is. But the concept was sick, and the design looked cool af. The scene with Ruby meeting her mum for the first time genuinely made me cry. I've honestly only come close to crying watching the show so far (apart from the odd exception), but this one just hit me so hard in the heart. It was so beautifully done. Also Ncuti's acting in this episode (well the whole series really) has just been absolutely out of this world. Not just the screaming, but those subtle moments, like the smile through the window at Ruby meeting her mum. There was some sadness in that smile as well as happiness. Also the bit when he says something like 'Ruby's mum drives us insane but Sutekh ohhh' really reminded me of 10 when he used to do that 'ohhh' thing. Also with Gold's score as well, it just gave me that extra kick of nostalgia, particularly that bit and when the tardis dematerialises in front of Ruby's birth mother and the others, it just gave me that little nostalgic chill. So all in all, while there is without a doubt room for improvement and many parts that could have been better thought out, that was still a fantastic episode and a really nice ending for Ruby, nicely tying a lot of it off. Mrs Flood's gotta be Clara now that you mention it. 😂You see, I just don't notice these things. That post about her outfit and the 'clever boy' line would just be too much of a coincidence. I just don't know what to think at this point. All I can say is that she does scare me 😂, and I'm massively intrigued and excited for what the next Christmas episode and the next series has in store for us! 😊

Paul Flux

I loved this reaction, and the way that you can laugh off the aspects that you found disappointing, while savouring the good bits! I agree that the acting has been really good. I thought that Genesis Lynea was great as Harbinger, Lenny Rush was impressive, and Bonnie Langford was a revelation, considering that her role in classic Who was mainly to scream really loudly! I couldn't really rationalise what Rose Noble's role was here though, either narritively, or within UNIT. Last we saw her she was still a schoolgirl, now she's Essential Personnel in UNIT HQ?

Michael

I agree the episode was enjoyable but messy. I had the same reaction to the scene with Fleabag's Sister - It was a strange shift in tone. I liked the conclusion to Ruby's storyline, i thought that was well done. Overall I liked the episode but it didn't live up to my expectations.

Stephen Wray

Mrs Flood not Clara but does seem to be Cosplaying different companions, which to me is something that Missy would do

Paul Flux

I think that one of RTD's consistent strengths is writing good parts for older actresses. Mrs Flood, Susan Triad, Mel here are all interesting acting challenges.

Mark Ten

First Mrs Flood is wearing Clara's outfit and then she is cosplaying classic Who Romana 1. Look at that line she delivers to Cherry. Its The Master trolling the Doctor

Mark Ten

Oh, The dog thing is a jackal

Must say I didn't like this for a few reasons. Her mum only being special because they thought she was, fine, but only to her, it makes no sense that sutekh couldn't sense her immediately being a few metres away on ruby road wrapped around the Tardis. Why was Sutekh unable to destroy the rope, his avatar susan disintegrated people clothes and all so why was the rope immune. If it was because it was a memory from the weird memory Tardis that still doesn't explain it as apparently the death wave was killing memory. Sutekh lost his grip on the Tardis because it moved a bit fast despite clinging to it in space and in the time vortex in full flight. Finally the death to death thing seems full of problems. Add water to a flood nothing really happens add fire to a fire you get more fire until the fuel is gone add radiation to a hotspot it just effects things faster. Why would death energy be able to not only neutralise itself but reverse itself and even if we accept that it did somehow kill death dose that mean that now all life forms cannot die. If not then the death wave must be under conscious control meaning sutekhs. Also throwing him into the time vortex or a knockoff version didn't kill him when he was an osyrin in pyramids of mars why would essentially the same method work now, other people time travel so why won't he latch onto another traveller later on. My only conclusion is either this is a cop out bull###t ending or he is not he who waits and we need alot more explanation. The toymaker would not run from this guy.

tal goren

she could just be one of clara's time clones. they lived completely normal lives except when they run into the Doctor.

tal goren

I heard a theory that she is a 'memory companion' that was created from the memory Tardis.

tal goren

You know, when the doctor kept mentioning that Roger ap Gwilliam was "the most dangerous PM in history" despite being fully aware that The Master was also part of that list, I couldn't help thinking that The Doctor was purposely Trolling The Master. so maybe you are on to something here.

tal goren

"just this once everybody lives!!!"

Red Claw

Normally I don't like killing of everyone and bringing them back. This time I don't mind it as much. It was done well. Mrs Flood was wearing clothes of different Companbions. As I have heard in other reactions, the outfit she wears in the end was Romanas outfit. So she isn't Clara. And I love the scene where he got the scene. I did not need to know how he got there. I didn't need to know when and where it was. It was great in what it was. Although it was tell and not show, how else do you bring up the concept of death of facts and memories. I love that concept. 73 yards Headcannon/theorytime: When the Doctor disappeared Ruby was alone and did die, but Sutekh was still connected to the Tardis and intrigued of her secret. He couldn't let her die, because then the secret would die with her. So at the end of her life he made Ruby one of his minions and send her back in time. Because he was still connected to the TARDIS she was emitting the same perception field as the TARDIS. Everyone near her recognized her as a minion of death and that's why they ran. Sutekh needed Ruby to undo the disappearance of the Doctor to get to know the mystery of her mother.

I think Mrs Flood is something else entirely. Fourth wall breaks are rare in the show - I mean they happen in small moments, but not with regular frequency, maybe once every few seasons. But she does it consistently, again and again, with such purpose. She's teasing the audience by alluding to previous companions - clothing, turns of phrase, etc - and I think she's playing with us on purpose. I think things are going to get META. Really, really META.

Mab7373822

I also think Anita Dobson is brilliant as Mrs Flood. Despite all the CGI monstrousness of Sutekh (and I liked his inclusion), Mrs Flood was infinitely more sinister and subversive with only a few lines of dialogue and a dark smile.

Mike

Oh yes you're absolutely right forgot about that. God I hope its not Clara.

Jade Ellis

A lot of people have brought up the thing with the mum pointing at the sign. Having watched this a second time along side you guys it hit me. The Doctor is there at that moment. He's watching her so is it not her pointing out the street sign to the Doctor?

Eric Aitala

I'm really ambivalent about this one.... a lot of nice moments interspersed with raging plot holes.

It's a Ghost.

Ooh, this is good. After this episode, my best guess about Mrs. Flood was that she's the Master, because she doesn't seem very Susan-y or Clara-y to me, but she does seem a bit Missy-y.

It's a Ghost.

I really enjoyed this episode, and I had tears in my eyes from when Kate was erased all the way to the end. But when it was revealed who Ruby’s mom was, I was left thinking, “Uh, what about the snow?” Also, the pointing at the signpost was kinda lame. But then again, when the Doctor visited Ruby Road in the Christmas special, Ruby’s mom didn’t point. It was only later in Space Babies when Ruby made it snow that we first see Ruby’s mom point, and in response, the Doctor remarks that his memory has changed. My guess is that Ruby’s mom is just a normal person, and for some other reason, maybe something to do with her dad, Ruby has a special gift of controlling memory, altering past events, and bringing snow and music from the past into the present.

It's a Ghost.

Also, I love seeing how the same thing can resonate so differently with different people. Like, I absolutely loved the scene with the random woman. I felt it so deeply. And I loved seeing her with her baby again at the end.

Mark Ten

That creepy, 'Tell your maker Im coming to storm down your gates' and then 'Im sorry it had to end like this. I had such plans", kind of cinched it for me as the Master. Still not sure why she didnt recognize the Police Box at first, but its too good a theory to throw away yet.

Mark Ten

LOL, and they still wont let a Prime Minister into UNIT HQ. Still... given how often Unit gets wiped out it probably doesnt matter much.

Willos

to me a lot of that was great but also a lot of it made no sense and was strange. The build up was good but the final act fell shortttt. Also just to add i disagree the acting was the best we've seen, to me nothing will ever top the acting in season 4 and the end of time in 2009

Keith Goodnight

I really liked the previous episode, but my reaction when I reached the end of this one my reaction was "um, well, okay." When the episode opens with universal apocalypse it telegraphs that the story will end in a reset button. While it's always a foregone conclusion that the Doctor will win in the end, the stakes for the people caught up in the story are real because not all of them survive-- until they tell us it's going to be a reset button so the stakes are gone for everyone. Attempts at drama after that were just manipulation. Then the whole Ruby's mom storyline was pure anticlimax mixed with a large measure of un-explanation. The scene when Ruby meets her Mom at the coffee shop was good, but too little too late to redeem the episode overall. EDIT: forgot to mention-- I don't think Mrs Flood is Clara. Yes, she wore one of Clara's outfits, but then at the end she was wearing one of Romana's outfits. I think they're teasing these possibilities to get fans guessing, but I'm going to go out on a limb and predict she's actually an entirely new character, not anyone from the past at all. Here's my outside-the-box guess: she's one of the gods in this pantheon they keep talking about. Possibly the god of storytelling, explaining all the fourth wall breaking she does. (Then again, after this episode it may just be wishful thinking for me to expect that much explanation.)

tal goren

Paula: "I am Clara of course, and you? Me: 🤔 am I? maybe we are all Clara? 🤯

hrcaffee

Arnold Schwarzenegger voice: "it's not a Cla-ra!...." it's just the 20th? 23rd? easter egg of the season, at this point RTD is tossing those things off like a fighter jet's countermeasure flares for fan's plot-seeking theory missles to get distracted by (boy I started with one sound bite and then erected a whole second part 😅 )

Colin 3of5

We'll I think your safe from from Clara considering yesterdays news from Jenna

Ben

Except Clara's clones are only in the Doctor's life up until 11 because they're not needed after that once the Great Intelligence is defeated.

Nicole Mazza

Yeah, I keep forgetting a lot of people missed those episodes back during the 60th.

Nicole Mazza

Unless she's carrying the Timeless Child! (Sorry!)

Nicole Mazza

The show returns at Christmas, with the story by Moffat.

Colin 3of5

You should be 🥳🤣

Geraint Harrison

Honestly, Moffat is great writing singular stories so I'm happy about this.

Geraint Harrison

OH MY GOD I FINALLY UNDERSTAND. IT REALLY WASN'T ABOUT RUBY'S MUM. TIME IS MEMORY AND MEMORY IS TIME. RUBY HAD A SUPERNATURAL CONNECTION TO THE EVENTS OF RUBY ROAD BUT THE ONLY THING SHE REMEMBERS OF IT ARE FROM A VHS. THE EVENTS WERE IMPORTANT BUT THE MUM IS NOT, SUTEKH WANTED TO KNOW WHY RUBY HAD THAT CONNECTION HOWEVER BECAUSE RUBY TRUELY BELIEVED HER CONNECTION WAS BECAUSE OF HER MOTHER, THUS DID SUTEKH AND HE NEEDED TO KNOW WHY BECAUSE THE EVENTS CHANGED AND WERE KEPT REAL LIKE THE MEMORY TARDIS, HER MOTHER DID NOT GET KILLED IN THE DEATH WAVE. MAESTRO REVEALED THAT SHE WAS STRONGLY CONNECTED BUT NOTHING WAS SAID ABOUT HER MOTHER. RUBY WAS WHAT WAS SPECIAL HOWEVER RTD PUT THE FOCUS ON HER MUM BECAUSE I THINK HE DIDN'T WANT ANOTHER ROSE (SERIES 1) SITUATION.

Geraint Harrison

can't explain Ruby's mum pointing though lol
