OK, I've got to admit that I'm nervous as well as intrigued to find out what you made of this one! 😟

Paul Flux

Apologies in advance for UK 'lads culture' c.1999! Although there were actually worse comedies on British TV around this time!

Meef

Guitar strings ARE super important though.

Brodie Vickers

Somehow I'm not expecting you to love this one lol😂.. but let's see. Considered by most to be one of the better episodes from this series

Jakob1978

Yeh this is a tricky episode, there’s some really good stuff in there (the whole appeal reveal at the end is excellent), and the interplay throughout between Lister and Rimmer is really good. But yikes, the whole shower bit is really uncomfortable to watch. And the hidden camera idea is spoofing a show in the uk (Beadles About) that had ran for 10 years, but had finished 3 years before this episode was shown. I remember feeling it was out of date even on first broadcast.

Raven Stromdans

The bulk of this episode makes it one of the two episodes I legitimately dislike in the series, the other being "Angels and Demons". They both have their odd good joke in during their runtime, but KrytieTV in particular leaves a bad taste in my mouth for the entirety of the premise. I'm glad the Gals have...I suppose a more nuanced view of the episode that I simply don't have. There's a lot that could have been written about the core premise of the show that could have been better posed and it feels like they tried to do something more progressive, but even during the time this episode aired, they fell painfully short in my estimation. Anyway, looking forward towards the next few episodes, which I feel like aren't nearly as egregious as this one was. Keep Calm and Smeg On, Gallifrey Gals.

TuneIntoSanityFM

Before smartphones, and the internet, this was just a ludicrous idea. Today, it's appalling..-ly relevant!

Brodie Vickers

Mr. Ackerman was such a delightfully sublime supporting character

James Cluskey

You don't need to justify what you didn't like in this. It is the general consensus and you were more than fair to the episode in your review. If anything, you gave it a far better review than most! I do really like Krytie TV myself, I am massively in the minority in that regard as it generally gets voted in the bottom three or four Red Dwarf episodes. I completely understand the issues people have with the politics of it. I would say you articulated the issues better than I have seen anybody before. It isn't that the episode is sexist in and of itself, it just delves into an area that many would find unwise/unsuitable for comedy. The episode was originally called No Strings Attached and was going to focus more on the appeal before the Krytie TV element was added. Kochanski was supposed to appear in this more but Chloe Annett got ill the week of filming and had to be written out aside from a few pickups. Can't help but feel the episode could have done with more Kochanski to balance it all out but that was out of their hands.

Troy Convers

Yep, it's that episode and longtime Dwarfers know how problematic the main theme is. But, let's pick the good things from this episode, as it isn't quite a dead loss. THE GOOD: - The Lister/Rimmer bunk scenes are a well oiled machine; the subplot of the guitar strings is great writing, and Rimmer being the voice of conscience (even if for selfish reasons) is more like late stage HoloRimmer. - Warden Ackerman is just fan-smegging-tastic. Graham McTavish plays such a great part; his mannerisms are like Rimmer on acid, and he deserves a more permanent role. - Killcrazy? Eh, you're not looking at him for character growth, but he's still funny. - The B-movie spoof was hilarious; I'd love to see a whole ep done in that style - The Lister/Kochanski/Tim dynamic could have been a killer storyline had it been real, and could easily have been the main plot for the episode, with a side helping of Kryten seeing things from a woman's perspective. THE BAD: But (sigh) it's the 90’s, the lads era, the Loaded/FHM/Maxim era which was pretty cool to a point, but the whole voyeuristic shower storyline is just so fucking cringey it's embarrassing, and has aged like a pig carcass locked in a car in the Mojave desert. We have seen empowered women in RD before so it isn't like it isn't possible, but it seems like Rob Grant took all of the girl power with him when he left. - Given the main plot, this would have been the golden opportunity of letting Kochanski shine and be the main character. But Naylor can't write a woman character to save his life, and she's reduced to a bit part, crushed under the weight of the Bechtel test.

Jasper de Vries

Well, that happened. Glad to see the Gals found some silver linings on the sides of the episode.

GillyBean

I loved Kochanskis response so much, it redeemed the gimmick just a smidge. without that i think this would have been miserable :( also the flours joke has stuck with me for yeearrss, i think of it every time i see bags of flour at the supermarket.

Chris Fone

Like others have said I was honestly so worried about you watching this one. It was this and Parallel Universe that I thought would be the biggest stumbling blocks to get over, I even feared you'd hate this so much you'd stop watching altogether. This was the first time I've skipped to the end to hear your thoughts before actually watching the reaction with you, I was that concerned.

Chris Fone

It really has aged the worst of all the eps you've seen up to know & I was right there, with you, felling all the uncumfortableness but I'm really glad you could sift though that and find the good bits of Kochansky's anger and Lister's stupidity. I'd actually forgotten those were there. Hopefully it's not a spoiler to say it doesn't ever get this bad again, onwards and upwards eh?

Lizbeth Marcs

I'm going to be the odd one out on this episode and actually defend it. Some people here might be too young to remember, but there was a raft of for pay soft core / questionable consent media on both sides of the Atlantic (in the U.S. the equivalent is "Girls Gone Wild") as well as ridiculous gross out prank shows, that were gaining in popularity right around the time this episode was filmed. Both of these types of media were the pre-cursors to reality TV today. The episode isn't taking aim at shows that were no longer on the air, but on the rise of pay-per-view and videotape media that was flooding the market in the late 90s. This isn't a guess at the purpose of the episode: this is something that's specifically said in the behind-the-scenes doc for Series 8. Even when I saw this episode on my local PBS station back in the day, it was pretty clear to me that this was supposed to be a criticism of the "Girls Gone Wild" type of media as well as gross-out prank shows (anyone remember "Fear Factor"?). What I'm trying to say is that this episode's heart is in the right place, and it is taking aim at the right targets, but the problem is that the "women's shower night" footage goes just a smidge too far and muddies the waters. EDITED TO ADD: I realized that I didn't add this. I absolutely understand people who find that middle point cringey and uncomfortable. Because it is (like I said: the women's shower stuff is a smidge too far). Kristine was supposed to be in this episode more than she was (which may have been the missing voice this episode needed to balance out the gross), but Chloe Arnette unfortunately had the flu and couldn't even make the live filming. Her scenes had to be shot at a later date and she ended up getting shoehorned into the episode as a result.

Mordredd

I was a young laddish lad in the 90's and I watched it when it was aired. This ep was the point I left off with red dwarf. It just made me feel 'ick'. Sure, it was technically saying this sort of thing is bad, but that was kinda an obvious thing that didn't need saying even back then. Was Kryten being assigned to the women's wing back in episode 1 purely to set up this shower scene gag? Was there some real world scandal or theme in society at the time that made this a relevant issue at the time? not back then, no. I had (and still have) very liberal outlook on sex/nudity themes in tv shows but this one just missed the mark for me and felt like a cheap exploitation gag masquerading as a 'exploitation is bad, mkay' piece. Just my opinion and in no way should it spoil anyone elses enjoyment. I look forward to finally getting to the rest of season 8 and beyond, I've had alot of fun re-watching and re-evaluating the show so far (I think i was a bit harsh on series 7 back in the day - it's one of my faves now)

Mark Ten

On another note, this feels more like the Rimmer we've come to know (I almost said "come to love" but thats not possible).

Wilss

The reveal at the end is good, but the set up has a blatant continuity error. So the appeal was about guitar strings all this time, but he literally gets the letter of appeal delivered at the start about 20 seconds after he finds out he has no guitar strings, so how did he make the appeal in that time? XD

Dieter Maggs

I believe he got the guitar then a follow up letter stating that if he wants his strings he will have to appeal. Later on you see the pile of folders (just before Kryten enters their cell) which is their appeal forms.

My least favourite episode of the entire show. It's quite miserable that the episodes made in the 80s were more progressive than this one from the late 90s. I've probably missed other people mentioning this, but the actor who plays Ackerman is Graham McTavish from the Hobbit, Outlander and House of the Dragon among other things. He's totally unrecognisable here!

Jonathan

Watching this for the first time in a long time it wasn't AS bad as I remembered. Some good jokes, and at least most of the cast immediately acknowledge the secret filming is wrong. But, end of the day... you're still playing it for laughs. So it's minus a million points out of the gate.

Susan K Dailey Photography

Just wanted to comment as well that while this wasn't my first series of Red Dwarf (my parents wouldn't let me watch it but I did sneak the odd episode of various series here and there), but I do remember that this series was by far the most heavily advertised by the BBC. For a short while Red Dwarf was everywhere, and they had more budget for this series than any other. Unfortunately despite getting the highest ratings in Red Dwarf's history it just didn't resonate with a lot of the longtime fans and there were a lot of complaints. This, combined with the BBC knowing that Doug was more keen on taking the series forward as a movie rather than writing more episodes is what essentially led to the BBC pulling the plug. Which is why we had a full decade of no Red Dwarf. I got into Red Dwarf during that 10 year lull, buying it on DVD whenever a series came out. In fact, I bought my first DVD player specifically because Red Dwarf was coming out on DVD!! The first series I saw during airing was the three part special which some people think of as series 9, and which other people don't! The cast were all still very prominent on TV at this time - Craig had Robot Wars (which I loved) and then joined Coronation Street, Chris did the Tomb Raider movies then presented his own shows (Massive Machines, Massive Engines, etc), Danny was in Blade 2, M.I. High and then joined the fantastic Death in Paradise (which he's just returned to!) not long after Red Dwarf came back, and Robert did Scraphead Challenge (a joint favourite with Robot Wars), and his Carpool youtube channel, before segueing into his other youtube ventures

Matthew Hanlon

Did they do the making of series 7? Did I miss it?

Geraint Harrison

Honestly, I love red dwarf for how they turn hard to talk about situations on their head and address how to deal with them. HOWEVER this episode falls completely short of that and just shows the negative side and I feel this is maybe due to a certain writer not being there for this series, too many 'lad' jokes and not enough "comeuppance" as Rimmer would say. Generally this series is okay compared to the others but this episode in particular was shocking to see after not watching it for a while.

Travis Boyle

Haven't watched this one in awhile. A lot of good stuff in the episode I especially like Ackerman. Maybe they could of had the women prisoners cheering at the end at Lister's plight. But then I guess Rimmer wouldn't have found out about Kryten pranking Lister though. Forgot the 3 hour joke. Yeah pretty weak. Nobody showers for 3 hours.

Jakob1978

Regarding Kochanski’s limited role in this episode, that may be partly down to the fact that Chloe Annette missed the studio recording for this episode due to a Kidney Infection. I don’t know if the original script had more of her in it, but obviously circumstances meant she is missing for a lot of the episode (if you notice in the scene where they are coming back from the mission, she’s in a close up, but not in any of the wide shots)

pbaker

I agree with all of the above and I think it’s worth watching from one minute in again because I think you missed the ‘post’s arrived’ joke which ages like a fine wine.

pbaker

By you I mean the galifrey girls

Karl Ward

The whole shower "joke" made me feel deeply uncomfortable as any depiction of the perceived stereotypical man or women tends to. But perhaps it was done in a way in which it could hold a mirror up to men who fall into certain categories and make them think twice before they ogle. That's the kindest I can be and I'm all for being kind!

Wilss

The letter said 'We are willing to review your case', which implies he already made a claim.

Wilss

There are a lot of 'Making ofs' they're yet to do.

Frank Murphy

Didn't go down particularly well then let alone 20+ years later.

Frank Murphy

Says on the wiki for kill crazy he actually got there for killing a family for a laugh, the crazy mofo

Makhiel

Yeah, this one was certainly funnier when I was 15. And I don't even think it's a bad premise per se but any shots of the audience are painful to watch.

Dieter Maggs

I think it's the wording of it as the letter starts with "Because of the nature of your crime, we are willing to review your case." Obviously Lister would want strings on his guitar so they have agreed to hear him out via an appeal. The "your case" just means his side of why he should be allowed them, not an actual case he has already put forward. The rest of what he reads definately seems like he is reading it for the first time as it points out all he needs to begin.

Troy Convers

Like 'Men Behaving Badly'...

Troy Convers

The post's arrived and the 'flours' is straight out of the Stephen Wright playbook. 😂

Marie uk

I do hope this hasn't put you Gals off watching more red dwarf coz season 10,11,12 are my favourite and the film is really emotional you'll love it xxx
