This was the 50th episode and the Radio Times ran a feature celebrating the fact. I was a big Red Dwarf fan and I hated it. However a girl at my college quoted the line ‘follow the Rimmer shaped blur’ and the guitarist in the band I was in named ‘the one with Pete’ as one of his favourites.

This is one of my favourite episodes of this series. I love the teamup of Rimmer and Lister together against the system..it’s probably the friendliest they’ve been towards each other and it’s definitely fun to see. And I love Mac Macdonald as the Captain so seeing them up against him just makes me happy.

Young Kochanski was played by Holly Earl who went on to be in the shows be in series 3 of Humans and the first 2 series of Cuckoo and the Doctor who episode The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe.

The more I think about it, the more I realise it is kind of messed up that Cat is in the brig. They are there for misusing confidential files, but Cat probably doesn't even know what they are, he was never an employee of the corporation, his civilisation evolved on the ship and he isn't even human, so subjecting him to their laws is really colonial in a way. Never thought about it before. I do love how the scutters are loyal to Lister and not the Captain, they remember what they went through and met their wives in the alternate reality so are probably thankful.

I only vaguely remember the final trio of episodes, but I rather think these prove a highlight of this series. I do feel that the Lister/Rimmer plotline feels particularly disconnected from the Cat/Kris/Kryten storyline. It almost felt like they wanted to do two different episodes, but didn't have the time or sufficient writing for both, so they just sort of jammed them together. I think of the two story lines, Lister and Rimmer's shenanigans is the stronger side of the story, at least until the two plotlines join up at the very end. Keep Calm and Smeg On, Gallifrey Gals! Me and Mr. Flibble will be here smoking kippers with Bob and Madge until the next episode!

Troy Convers

One of the great eps of the post-s6 era, and the sort of sci-fi goofiness you want from a RD ep. The Rimmer and Lister 'buddy-buddy' prisoner skits are on fire, and poor old Captain Hollister being the straight man to their antics is the icing on the cake. - Warden Ackerman is the gift that keeps on giving; Graham McTavish could play this character completely seriously in a non sitcom setting and make him terrifying. - Lots of hot Scutter action; Bob is a prime example of how good writing can bring a prop to life. The theme he's humming is from 'The Great Escape' in case you didn't know. - the trade off to the Rimmer/Lister larks is the other three taking a bit of a back seat in comparison, and as usual the writers almost completely waste Kochanski, save for that fantastic de-aging gag. They're so kew-ute! But most importantly, it feels like a classic S4/5/6 ep, and without Rob Grant.

This might be the friendliest we've ever seen Rimmer and Lister be with each other. Clearly being in prison together facing a common enemy is good for their bonding.

It weird, the entire plot of the series originated from Lister smuggling an animal on board, which was forbidden because it could mess with the wiring. yet, in this season, we find out the ship is infested with rats and keeping pets is allowed even for prisoners. once again red dwarf doesn't bother with continuity.

it almost feels like Rimmer is out of character. I guess he completely gave up on his career and therefore doesn't try to suck up to the Captain anymore

Perhaps that's why birdman was IN prison. And in the hole. He'd rather his bird be alive, even if it meant both of them being caged.

I remember watching this one when it went live on PBS. When re-watching this episode, I had recognized the third guard that beat up Cat. He always plays small roles, but, if you've seen Snatch; Lock, Stock, And Two Smoking Barrels; or Bourne Identity, you may recognize his face. Back to the episode, I quite love this Lister-Rimmer dynamic that's shown here. It's always a favorite to have two rivals join forces against a common enemy, especially if they are like rowdy siblings.
