It's a shame that you're watching the broadcast version, as aside from that scene (which isn't radically different in the extended version) there are a lot of subtleties to other scenes that aren't in the Broadcast version, which quite frankly feels butchered in comparison to the Extended version. Here's a link that lists the differences: https://en.battlestarwikiclone.org/wiki/Pegasus_(Extended_Version)#Chronological_list_of_new_scenes I can edit the extended version to take out that scene and put it on Dropbox if you want to watch at your own leisure, maybe as a prelude to Razor.

John Welch

I’m happy to hear you guys got through this OK. I was genuinely concerned. I voted for Battlestar Galactica when it was originally in the poll you put up sometime ago against Farscape. But I wrote a comment explaining without spoiling my very deep concerns for you watching Galactica. I’m glad you gals stuck in there and I want to recognize the personal strength and mindfulness it takes a survivor to be able to experience such triggering subject matter in a way that is healthiest for themselves but also supportive of others in the community who might have similar issues. I look forward to watching your reaction when I’m able to later today.

Troy Convers

TBH, Agathon and Tyrol getting assaulted while in the brig was also horrible for me, because of something similar I went through in my teens.

Locoturbo

The last scene between Baltar and the prisoner 6... such incredible acting from both of them. About "certain actions" of the Pegasus crew. I've decided the following. It's not about what the cylons deserve, torture and worse. It's about what certain actions would say about YOU. As a similar example, imagine an individual or group going into a holodeck and doing those things to holograms who don't exist. It still wouldn't be OK because of what that says about the people taking those actions.

Seth Walker

Admiral Cain is one of the characters I hate most in television history. Michelle Forbes plays her part brilliantly but my gods is she awful. The environment she fostered tolerating and encouraging the dehuminization of anyone who stands in her way... She is a great example of the banality of evil that permeates so many military organizations in our world.

Ben Chan

Did you happen to watch the "Caprica" spin-off?

Tippis

Quite. The extended version adds a good amount of characterisation to some of the key Pegasus crew that not only makes this version less simplistic in how it just paints a picture of “good ship” vs “bad ship”, but it also sets up how the series will use those characters subsequent episodes. Right now, all new characters except the Pegasus crew chief are just 100% unlikeable, and that turns their (admittedly small) character arcs into… well, not arcs, any more — more like sharp steps with unclear logic. Even as an after-thought, and especially if you intend to watch Razor, going through the extra scenes makes the whole Pegasus arc you've just started a lot more sensible.

Troy Convers

Finally, we can talk about how fucking AWESOME Michelle Forbes is as Rear Admiral Helena Cain, channelling a ton of Ro Laren into the part. Incidentally, she played another awesome role as M.E. Julianna Cox in Homicide: Life on the Street; a series which predated The Wire (both are set in Baltimore, but for me is the superior series.

Mike Connaghan

Now that's what I call entertraument!

Mike Connaghan

This is the first time I have ever used or seen that word I just made up.

Mike Connaghan

I mean, I assume plenty of people have made it up before.

Mark Chrisco

For what its worth, the actor who played Sharon's interrogator was extremely disturbed by his actions and was constantly worried he was traumatizing Grace Park in the scene. So much so that Grace had to reassure him more then once that she was ok.

Todd “Canuck” Schmuck

These Pegasus episodes are incredibly powerful and I’d only put one other arc on its level personally(I know taste is subjective, but I believe this episode was the point where I realized this wasn’t just a good show I was watching, but had become my most anticipated show to watch each week). The showrunners have been very deliberate in not showing the Cylon side of things so far so the viewers come in with a similar perspective as the humans. It lets them explore many difficult to tackle real world issues of viewing your enemy as a singular evil whole, seeing them as something less then human and what people are capable of when they’re allowed to view a people as something less than them. To the point where the hate is such that it can spread/transfer to any who question it. Sometimes seeing others taking a mindset you share further than you’re comfortable can be a wake up call to where beliefs of an evil, less than human view of an enemy/race/culture can lead. It made me question things that I had previously been accepting of such as Starbucks torturing of the Cylon in the first season in a new light. It’s a rare piece of writing that can affect your own real world perspective, and I have a lot of thoughts for after the stories conclusion so there’s no spoilers. (While it should wait until the shows done obviously, the UN actually had the shows creators and actors do a panel discussing many of the issues such as those mentioned, the kind of generational hatred that can spiral into an endless cycle of violence. It’s sad how relevant to the real world the stories can be, but it can act as a vehicle for otherwise very difficult discussions about the topic).

Troy Convers

That other arc and it's repercussions actually tops this arc, IMHO.

Troy Convers

Notice the subtle power plays Cain does when greeting Adama; the hand above grip on the handshake and the 'welcome back to the fleet' quip immediately puts you on notice that she's asserting dominance over Adama.

Derek Orr

I understand the feelings about Cain…but part of the point of the story is she is kinda right about a lot of points about how adamas people got too close, got away with things, mutiny, conflict of interest etc etc it’s kinda like Captain Jelico in TNG She is absolutely evil and in the wrong…but it’s important to remember it is the military and it is not just time of war, but time of apocalyptic war…an Admiral cant just merge and lead 2 ships with an approach that works in a civilian world with an HR leader merging 2 companies. The episode was played in the era of guantamo bay and that prison in Iraq with American war crimes. The extended episode does offer a bit more background ..but their is a Pegasus movie coming up that will offer way more insight to Cains childhood and background and actions

Nolan

Well, you guys made it through it, and more than that, you guys got what I believe the show was trying to say... There are SO many ways that BSG is not like Star Trek. It's darker, more brutal, more violent, far less ideal with clearly imperfect characters, and yet, at the end of the day, it still has at its core that very Trekkian principle of showcasing issues it want's it's audience to learn without talking down or pandering to them. The broadcast version moves at quite a clip, and I do miss some of the lost character moments and extended beats, but yeah, not watching the extended version of that scene was probably for the best. It's already filmed and edited in a way to get the response it wants to get. This episode actually does a really good job of revealing layers of the awfulness onion of Pegasus. Having characters describe events while cross-cutting to the subjects in question in the midst of another scene. And the final moments of this episode is just cinematic beauty. The score on that scene is titled "Prelude to War" and it's wonderful, kicking in as Adama storms down the corridor, then the tension building and building as the camera revolves around both actors as they have their conversation over two entirely different sets, culminating an oncoming clash. Despite all that lead up to it, it's one of the clips of the show I just go back and watch on youtube.

Troy Convers

Gals, we are talking about an extra FIFTEEN or so minutes, of which THAT scene adds very little running time. The broadcast version really makes them (Cain aside) look a bit cartoonish.

Troy Convers

Cain is very much a 'Inter arma enim silent leges' type of leader.

Todd “Canuck” Schmuck

I’m sorry that happened to you. I only unknowingly(initially) interrupted something once that is enough to make the adrenaline surge when those scenes come on(just enough that if speaking instead of typing, your breathing makes your voice catch). I can barely imagine how difficult those scenes must be for anyone who ever experienced the direct focus of abuse, particularly from anyone in positions of power(I have a particular disgust for that. I don’t rewatch the 5th Harry Potter because I get too angry at that one teacher to be able to enjoy the film). I hope talking about it is more cathartic than painful.

Troy Convers

You have to wonder why Madame President (the commander-in-chief, natch) didn't just promote Adama to at least a Rear Admiral, neatly avoiding any conflict with Cain by putting them on an equal footing, or better still a full Admiral which would have made him her superior officer. Yeah yeah, conflict is the name of the BSG game, but it could have been spread out where once Cain's war crimes were discovered she could have just taken off, leaving some glorious future eps where she occasionally reappears as an anti hero, or Adama hunting her down.

Derek Orr

Marking the side of their ships with kills is actually incredibly common and normal. It always seemed bizarre that they had that bit where Lee says we dont do that etc…it goes against everything else we see from our good guys when in battle with cylons.

Marissa Nielsen

Just wanted to say thank you for that ending discussion. It's a hard episode for me with the subject matter and the history of sexual violence in Utah and it being originally based on Mormon mythos - this remake actually accidentally falls into a lot of that on its own even with not being as inspired by it as the original series, which is interesting as an adult with religious trauma. Anyway, just wanted to say you're not alone either. I understand and see you guys too.

Troy Convers

I've just realised that the opening scene in the Extended version (Kara trying to persuade Adama about going back to Caprica with Galactica to rescue the resistance) isn't there; that's pretty instrumental for what lies ahead for that particular arc.

Brina Blue

That is so kind of you! Kat and Paula, please take advantage of this! There is so much more to the extended version of this episode than a few more terrible moments with Sharron and He who shall not be named.

Ann & Alex Taylor

It's definitely a War on Terror era show. As I understand it from my detached perspective as a Brit, a big point of debate at the time was rules for the treatment of prisoners, and associated issues. The show 24 was also a product of that era, with many scenes where Jack Bauer tortures suspects for information sparking discussion in the media. As always, well-written Science Fiction provides the best forum to look at humanity's issues.

John

Admiral Ro goes rogue. You get the feeling this is how the Maquis would run a battlestar? I love the beginning of this episode. After so much constant trauma and anxiety to get what you think is a happy moment when you find friends was such a breath of fresh air. Sadly it didn't last. I'm not bothered at all that Thorne died after attacking Sharon. I hate that Chief Tyrol was the instrument of his death. I don't think the people on Pegasus were inherintly evil. I think the capacity for that kind of evil is in all of humanity and when you're put in an environment filled with monsters, it's easy to become a monster to survive. We're taught violence in the name of justice is virtue. Once one is convinced they're justified in their actions, it's no longer a morally reprehensible act to them. (TO THEM - that's the key part)

Firefly24601

Everyone who saw BSG when it aired didn't have the extended version. We didn't have any problems following future plot lines, I don't think the Gals will either.

Funny That

It is also somewhat bizarre or entirely adolescent. Cylons aren't people, but they are people enough to be upset and scared of all of the "kills"? Sadly, there was no getting in to what the difference was between the crews attitudes. As you point out the Galactica crew can be gun-ho for the toasters, but they have a line that is not explored.

John

Kat and Paula, I'm sorry this episode brought up those feelings. I hope at least in your view they treated the subject honestly and respecftully.

Troy Convers

Well we do now, so no need to hamstring yourself for principle.

John

A bit on the technical side - the Pegasus is massively larger and more powerful than Galactica. Adama attacking the Pegasus in Galactica would be like a 50 year old Excelsior Class going up against the Galaxy Class Enterprise.

Locoturbo

I think I watched maybe 1 episode of it.

David Brown

Not everyone, those of us who got the Season 2.5 DVD set a couple weeks before Season 3 started airing did have the extended version to draw upon with added insight going into the airing of Season 3.

Ashtara Levin

Since you gals aren't watching the extended version, let me fill you in on something that was hinted at here in the broadcast version - which is that the Pegasus *DID* encounter civilian ships, they just didn't treat them very well... There's a scene in the extended version, just before Roslin is asking Adama when will all those new rations and supplies also trickle down to the fleet, where we see Chief Tyrol receiving a whole bunch of fresh new spare parts from Pegasus (remember how he had needed to build a whole new ship out of carbon because they just didn't have enough parts to replenish damaged ships?) he gets so excited and is amazed that they appear to be brand new, but later, when he and Cally are talking with Laird, Pegasus' Deck Chief, it gives that scene a whole different context - Laird says he was an aeronautical engineer but he "got drafted", when Cally asks him "wait, you're a civilian? how come?" he says "I was on the Scylla and we got picked up by Pegasus.. things happen" With the added detail of Admiral Cain shooting her XO for refusing to open fire when he deemed the risks to be to high, there's a subtle hint there that while Adama was committed to the welfare of the entire human fleet, Admiral Cain is committed wholeheartedly to the efforts of the war, rather then of the people.

Ashtara Levin

Yeah, but it gives so much more depth to that arc and Kara's character that I sympathise with Troy, having mentioned it though - I'm sure the gals will read your comment and get that perspective anyway =)

Daria

Thank you for your openness and insight in another wonderful reaction and analysis. Just became a patron because I've come to really look forward to seeing you discuss BSG every Tuesday. There are lots of other folks reacting to it right now but you are by far the best in your empathy, analysis, and humor in the face of TV that hurts. Can't wait to continue the journey with you!

Ben Chan

Firstly, I'm glad this was one you two were able to watch in person together. I hope that helped, because this was rough - even rougher than I remembered. Episodes like this remind me of the value of telling stories, and of having a community with which to experience them. I also appreciate Paula's take on the perpetrators - we want to think those people always had it in them, and it's easier to do that, because the truth is scarier. Look at the Stanford Prison Experiment and what "normal" people were capable of - and they didn't experience a thousandth of what the Pegasus crew must have, with their civilization destroyed and being in a constant state of war for months. This show isn't easy, that's for sure. And while it may have been a reference to Guantanamo, it doesn't really matter if it was, because it has happened before, and will happen again.

Troy Convers

Adama and the Galactica could easily have been Cain and the Pegasus without Roslyn keeping him in check.

Troy Convers

So it could stand a chance with the right tactics.

Troy Convers

Razor shows that scene. Oy, it ain't pretty.

Troy Convers

I think her Trek recognition and the Ro Laren connection actually makes it sting more than if it had been a non-scifi actress not associated with such a loved character.

Firefly24601

It's not just principle; it's THEIR mental health, and it's THEIR decision. They know what the extra scenes entail, and they do not want to watch it. The completionist in me agrees that it would be nice to have the extra context and fuller portrayal of the Pegasus crew. But it's not critical to any plot lines, so I suggest we let their decision be their decision and stop badgering them to watch something they don't want to watch. it won't hamstring their understanding of the show in any way.

Time Lord

We're so happy to have you here. Thank you so much for your support! - Kat

Karl Ward

Thank you both so much for your honesty, this was indeed a tough episode, it made me want to curl up into a ball when I first saw that scene, it's beyond horrendous and I'm so very sorry for your experiences. I'm reading a book at the moment called "Ordinary Men" by Christopher R. Browning and it demonstrates how people just like us all can be turned into monsters. The trick is that you dehumanise other groups or people. Once that is done you can internally justify any action. I've seen it happen to people in the workplace, in the world and I've had it happen to me. It's as though there's a conscience switch in most humans that, under the right circumstances, can be turned off and it's something that we all have to be wary of. Every day.

John

Agreed. Looking forward to the Razor reaction, if the Pals include it.

John

Without some exceptional luck and brilliant tactics on Galactica and some screw ups by Pegasus, Galactica wouldn't stand a chance. Galactica was a 50 year old ship ready for retirement when this began, and Pegasus is the latest and greatest the Colonies had.

Ashtara Levin

Now I have to know, is there an order to these movies that I should follow? bc I am going to binge the hell out of them one I locate them on the web..

Troy Convers

Now a few days have passed, I can now warn that there are more VERY traumatic scenes to come, murder, suicide, torture of a person that makes Four Lights look like Sesame Street. Yes, we haven't hit bottom in this series. Not even close. Even I think some of it a bit unnecessary on rewatch and that it's there for shock value, but there you go. 😑

Troy Convers

Yep. Adama and Roslyn will make Cain look quite PG, given time.

Ben Chan

Btw, it was so great to see y'all react to seeing Ensign Ro again! But that didn't last long as it turned out she was the "Jellico" on board, and from there it all went right off a cliff... (BSG's motto is, "NO, you cannot have nice things!")

Troy Convers

Also: You will love/hate almost everyone at some point. Almost everyone.

John

Not to go too far off topic, but I think Jellico was a good Captain. He wasn't "nice" but he was a good Captain.

Ben Chan

Not saying he wasn't, and during the beginning section of the episode, so was Cain. She wasn't doing anything wrong or outside her purview - simply exerting her rightful authority in that situation, even if we as fans of the characters didn't like her decisions regarding personnel assignments, etc.

Troy Convers

Razor takes place after the episode "The Captain's Hand" but before "Lay Down Your Burdens", and uses flashbacks to show Rear Admiral Cain's orders during and shortly after the Cylon attack, as well as events occurring on the final day of the first Cylon War.

Troy Convers

Oh, and as a footnote, the next ep has one of THE great cold opens in TV history, up there with BOBW pt2 and Stoke me a Clipper.

Ben Chan

I don't get why some people feel a need to "tease" what's coming up - especially on a reaction channel, when they're supposed to go in completely blind. Is it like a subtle power trip, where *you* get to stoke their excitement because you know something they don't or ... something? I really am curious what's in it for you to do that.

Troy Convers

I don't get why you need to reply. Who's the one on a power trip here? 🤔

Carrie Schwent

As someone who occasionally makes up her own words occasionally, well done!

Carrie Schwent

I'm so grateful to whomever warned you ahead of time about THAT scene. It was very difficult for me to watch it the first time around, and my previous situation (a mentally manipulative/abuse first marriage) could have been worse in the grand scene of things. Luckily i was able to get out of mine and into a much healthier relationship with someone ( our 18 year wedding anniversary is this month actually) I'm just glad you had time to mentally prepare, as I can only imagine what you'd have thought if you weren't. Am so happy you had each other in person for this one.

Ben Chan

No power trip. Your comment bugged me because I see people tease what's coming up all the time on reaction channels and I'm genuinely curious why do that?

Jonathan

I think Cain makes it fairly obvious she doesn't acknowledge Roslin's authority. Even if she'd tried something like that Cain would never give up power.

Jonathan

Interesting detail - Cain justifies a summary execution by calling herself an officer "on detached service during a time of war". a) She isn't on detached service. The entire civilian government including the president is *right there*. It's an admission she doesn't see Roslin or any civilian authority as legitimate. b) Time of war? Remember back to the mini-series. Adama tries to justify a suicide run by saying "we're at war". Roslin replies "The war is over. We lost". Nobody has ever said that to Cain. She's what Adama could have become without Roslin.

Troy Convers

Yep. Razor explains A LOT, and does that neat BSG trick of turning heels into faces, and faces into heels.

John

Please lay off the spoilers, no matter how subtle.

bakamitai

How did I miss when this came out??
