Unless I'm much mistaken, the scene with Doc Cottle marks the first time Adama has referred to the new Sharon as "she".

-That cold open is top 5 GOAT in my book, and the way that the feuding Vipers suddenly remember they're on the same side and form up to engage the unknown ship is one of my favourite bits in the whole series - Cain's whispered "There you are" on seeing the resurrection ship photos is like an apex hunter; its spine tingling. - There's a hidden edge to the Cain/POW 6 (aka Gina Inviere) dynamic that's explored in Razor, as is the civilian atrocities. Basically, anything offscreen that's mentioned in this arc is in Razor, with a juicy Easter egg on top as a bonus - Cotttle is just like Bones; he may be a grumpy old sod, but he is a healer and a moral man. Quite where he's getting his ciggies from...🤷‍♂️ - Poor Starbuck is like a deer in the headlights between two juggernauts; her look when Adama asks her to pop a cap in Cain's ass is priceless.

I love how the crew of Galactica can sometimes come across as fuckups, but by comparison to the crew of Pegasus, they are upstanding moral professionals. Take Gaius. Here he is compassionate, clever, manipulative (in a good way, steering the Pegasus crew), and proves his absolute genius in identifying the Resurrection Ship. He is deeply moved and disturbed by the treatment of the prisoner, and is by far showing the most humanity we have ever seen in him. Take Saul Tigh. He weaponises his alcoholism to get precious secrets from the Pegasus XO, manipulates the conversation behind a drunken front. He is really smart here. Never try to drink that man under the table. Kara Thrace completes an impossible mission, with no loss of life or even Cylon detection. Lee Adama manages to secure her a line of communication right under the Pegasus XO's nose. These people are amazing. We see so many of their mistakes, so many of their character flaws, but compared to the scum on Pegasus, they are amazing. I think Adama's apology to Sharon is massive. He sees her as a person, as does Doc Cottle. His journey of opening his mind to these possibilities, is remarkable when juxtaposed against the crew of the Pegasus, and their descent into evil. Murders of families and children, gang rape of prisoners, these people are monsters. Glad you are enjoying the show. For a lot of fans, this series of episodes is the height of the show. For me though, I think the best is still very much to come!

Also, which crew gives the most insight into Colonial society? Is the Galactica the outlier? The 12 Colonies were slavers, their enslavement of the sentient Cylons started all of this in the first place, triggering the first Cylon war. This entire culture may not have been of good people.

Andrew Nguyen

This arc of episodes aired in 2005, just 2 years after the US invaded Iraq based on the flimsiest of rationales while the country was still riding a wave of needing to exact revenge on "those people over there". It's amazing how this show was our way of collectively working through some of the debates that our elected leaders should have better engaged in at the time. What kind of country are we if we abandon our highest ideals when it becomes difficult to uphold them?

Jonathan

Yup. It's worth remembering the Pegasus crew had no "Earth" (comforting lie made up by Adama it may have been). They weren't running towards a promise of rebuilding the human race. All they had was increasingly suicidal attacks on the Cylons and an increasingly unstable commander. They had no mining ships or fuel processing ships. All they had to look forward to was death by the Cylons or death when their supplies ran out. As far as they were concerned the human race was dead. It's not surprising some of them turned into monsters.

John

You think it's crazy now? You ain't seen nuthin' yet. (valid pretty much at any point in the entire series) I love Michelle Forbes performance as Cain. It would be easy for such an extreme character to come across cartoonishly evil or just unbelievable, but she sells it. There's just enough humanity in how she relates to people that you can see her as someone who's had to make hard decisions and has made them. Adama's done the same (i.e. Olympic carrier, terminating Roslyn's presidency, etc.) That humanity in Cain makes her even more chilling as you realize she's not a monster, she's a person. People are capable of that.

Time Lord

I didn't even think about that! - Kat

Troy Convers

Cotttle's a good man, just a curmudgeon. And he's a healer. He's basically Bones turned up to 12.

Troy Convers

She's a hurt person, and hurt people, hurt people.

Troy Convers

Not quite that clever; the Cold War and the 'Red Scare' were shaping American democracy and society for decades. There's an awful lot of McArthurist themes in BSG04.

Nolan

Roslin's entire purpose since she found out she was dying and the genocide of the Colonies happened on the same day has been ensuring the survival of humanity. Now that she feels she's running out of time, her decisions have been made under much more pressure, because she has to ensure the species will continue after she's gone, and then along comes Cain. What are her options in this circumstance with a power mad, military might, the mission above all type? However, as far as Cain's long term goal, she did say it was to kick tje Cylons out of the Colonies. Which is a tad short-sighted, but she's very focused on stiking back instead of survival.

Ben Chan

The real lesson is that you can never trust an Admiral.

Jonathan

It's an insane plan by any stretch. Two warships are going to retake 12 occupied planets? No chance, but even if they did. All the major cities will be craters. The atmospheres will be radioactive for decades. And the Cylons - who have their own homeworld and ship/weapons manufacturing base - will know exactly where you are. Either Cain has totally gone of the deep end or her only ambition is to go out fighting.

Troy Convers

Hanson, Ross, Ncheyev, Hayes and every Admiral seen in The Orville disagree.
