Hell yeah. Such a great epsiode. Plus your one away from the season finale which is my favourite epsiode of the entire show. So exciting times ahead lol

Series VIII was impacted by budget issues. The original intention was for it to open with an hour long Back in the Red followed by four half hour episodes (Cassandra, Krytie TV, Pete and another episode) followed by a two part finale. Due to budget issues, they had to extend Back in the Red and Pete. Pete originally opened with the basketball game and none of the Archie stuff was there. The two Archie scenes were filmed and cut from Cassandra.

Honestly, I didn't even remember this episode and having rewatched it along with you, I agree with your assessment...this didn't make for a good pay off for the previous episode and was disjointed in general. Too many disparate ideas being jammed into a single plotline with no real cohesion. Also, the idea that the Captain would keep expecting Lister and Rimmer to fix stuff they broke WITH the tools they broke it WITH just...makes no bloody sense. And the occurring "joke" of Kryten feeling humiliated for being identified as a woman 1. makes absolutely no sense - they know he's ostensibly an androgynous android, but makes it fairly clear he identifies as male, regardless of the nature (or lack of) his genitalia and 2. comes across as misogynistic and it grates on my sensibilities every time it's brought up. Looking forward to wrapping up this season and moving on. I remember the final episode being...not terrible? But I guess we'll see. Keep Calm and Smeg On! I'll be here with Mr. Flibble smoking the worlds largest kippers to feed a t-rex until the next episode.

Fun fact I don't know about T-rexes but birds do not have the taste buds to taste spicy food. That's why hot peppers are hot they want to be eaten by birds and poop the seeds out over a wide area instead of mammals who will avoid hot peppers. So the spicy vindaloo shouldn't have effected her. Except for people. Mac Mcdonald said that the really long scene was done at like 2am and he was really tired and had a hard time getting through the monologue.

For the longest time, this episode was considered the absolute worst of the entire show by RD fans in multiple polls (it has recently been usurped, but that's for another day) for all the reasons you mentioned in the wrap-up. It's the first time that the plot was jettisoned in favour of a load of unconnected - and rather weak - gags. It's one of the reasons that people dump on this series; up to this point, Red Dwarf was a science fiction show with razor sharp wit, but the balance has tipped and it's now a farcical sitcom with some space stuff in it. I still think a lot of the humour hits throughout the series, but Pete (Part 2) is where the shark was truly jumped.

Andrew Mortimer

probably the worst episode ever, barely watchable. so bad they had to take 10 years off

Troy Convers

Ooh, that's some ASMR I didn't need to hear. 😄

Can agree that this episode suffered from the padding out of jokes, the captain scene "Do you know" went on far too long. Also why are they constantly getting changed from canary uniforms to prison uniforms. The archie joke doesn't fit in this episode belongs early in the series with the whole Kryten not wanting to be a woman.

Robert Gendron

I'm guessing Pete ran about 10 minutes long for one episode so they split it into two. The obvious cliffhanger make left part two with a ton of extra time to fill, so part two is really disjointed and padded with gags they cut from other eps.

I find it extremely annoying that the captain seems to go out of his way to pretended that Kochanski doesn't exist. we saw it in the first episode when they crashed Starbug and it was immediately assumed that Lister was responsible despite the fact that she was his superior and, as navigation officer, probably the only one who of the gang who was actually trained to fly it. In this episode, the time wand plot was Kochanski's idea and Kryten was the one who actually knew how to operate the thing, yet the captain called again to the two idiots he had no respect to, instead of the person who was actually responsible. Honestly, I think the problem isn't that they don't know how to write women (as I heard some people say), I think they just don't know to write competent people. if the captain would have talked with Kochanski in the first episode, the whole thing would have been cleared in five minutes without any trial or prison time. if, in this episode, the captain would have given the time wand to Kochanski and Kryten, they would have gone back to their original plan and frozen the ship again. they had to sideline the smart people to get the season's plot to work.

Troy Convers

Pete is a great episode, but it was set up as one hour long episode that was chopped up for weekly consumption, in an age before streaming and whole seasons/series were released at once. As such it works better that way. The Rimmer/Lister/Hollister dynamic is fantastic and reminiscent of the relationship between Inspector Clouseau and Chief Inspector Dreyfus in the Pink Panther films, with Hollister sanity being gradually eroded over each episode. The slower paced repeating of Pete's culinary habits is very much a British 'prolong the suffering' device, used to great effect in the Pink Panther, natch. Of course, with all of the attention on those three and Pete, poor Kryten, Kat and Kochanski get thrown the scraps of an android wang storyline which *could* have been the basis of a great episode all of its own, but barely works to set up a brilliant punchline by Kochanski. Yes, the only woman character in the whole of the episode gets virtually nothing to work with, because as we all know, Naylor can't write female characters for smeg. Oh well, at least there's the series finale to what was then the end of Red Dwarf. Remember to watch the alternate ending, and bring some kippers to smoke.

Brodie Vickers

Notice that Lister's holding a fork at the ready, just in case Pete doesn't want the curry.. he's such a curryaholic. Love that subtle shit😂Granted it's a weird episode, but then again this whole show is weird in general haha. Do agree it's definetly the weakest of this series.

John Veitch

It's true - for the majority of Part One, the time wand was the Kryten/Cat/Kochanski storyline - Lister and Rimmer only find out about it a couple of minutes from the end.

John Veitch

I always think of the delayed reaction scene in the captain's office when dental anaesthetic wears off :-D

Wagoo

This episode has some funny moments, but yeah it's kind of weird and missing a proper plot. It's generally one of the reasons S8 has the reputation as the worst season. Things start to pick up soon though and tons of excellent Red Dwarf episodes are to come

Chris Devlin

Honestly after this series finished and then the endless wait for news of any new episodes I was ready for the show to never come back. Rewatching it hasn't really changed my opinion much. If anything it's just reminded me of how poor some of it was. Series 7 wasn't perfect either but I still liked every episode. With this it just felt like the show was going in the wrong direction. I didn't hate the idea of bringing back the crew, as revamping the dynamic helps to keep things fresh. Its just that the quality of the writing really dropped substantially. Too many jokes that just don't really work. Regardless, the next episode I do remember quite enjoying so I'm interested to see if that holds up.

pbaker

I was a big Red Dwarf fan but I was annoyed at this point. I remember the final episode was put forward in the schedule and shown the following Monday instead of a Thursday. I had to set the video and someone at my drama class said ‘it was better than the ending to series 7’. I stuck around until the end but I’ve heard of other fans who were so apathetic they didn’t bother with the last episode. As I’m sure you know by now the show was off the air for ten years and a lot of what happened in that ten years is really interesting.

Travis Boyle

Yeah this was a pretty weak episode. I think it was to do with money issues. The next episode is better but I'm still glad it turned out not being the last time we saw these fantastic characters.

Frank Murphy

They unjumped it with series 10

Frank Murphy

What's worse this or time wave guys? Close one

Ross Nolan

It's very depressing to think the closest thing to a Kochanski based episode we've had this whole series was 'Cassandra' (where she is at least important to the plot, has some great lines and has good on-screen chemistry with Rimmer.) I feel bad for Chloë Annett, she deserves better. The Cat is also badly underserved this year but at least they gave him a "cool" heartbeat and Danny John-Jules a ridiculous but fun dance number.

Sebastian Bodine

I can't tell if they put in a bunch of filler to replace what they had to cut because of budget or if they put in a bunch of filler because Doug Naylor was running out of ideas. It's such a shame that they never utilized Kochanski like they did in Series VII. They should've had the main plot resolved half way through this episode or earlier and inserted something more complete like an extended epilogue.

Katrine Myra

Slowly catching up, was finally able to see this one...! Yeah, it's been a while since I've seen this, and I'm baffled about how it's supposed to work. Why in the world wouldn't they use the time wand to escape? Getting caught doesn't matter when they've got the power to literally stop and/or rewind time in their hands! None of this makes any sort of sense. And yes, it's drawn out and boring. I will admit to liking the Achie scenes though, but they are definitely out of place here. Just a poorly edited mess, IMO. On to the next!
