The thing to remember after the eighth series the BBC cancelled Red Dwarf. Another studio (UKTV) picked up the rights about a decade later. The ninth series/mini series is like a new pilot which will ask many more questions than it answers but bear with it, the series that follow are better.

Frank Murphy

And so era 2 and the BBC era ends and the next stage is rough, till series 10. Remember in many ways series 9 doesn't exist

Stephen A

I think I really liked the Captain from the brief appearance in the first series. Which is why they brought him back because he was well liked and everyone felt like there we'd missed a good setup shown in episode 1. But it might be the setup of this season that makes him not quite work - He was brought back as an adversary for our characters keeping them down rather than a fun addition.

Troy Convers

Hollister can be hit and miss for some, but he's the straight guy who suffers for the punchline, rather like Dreyfus in the Pink Panther films. It's all subjective, like how I think that Lower Decks is as funny as rabies, and probably more painful to experience. Now, Graham McTavish (Ackerman) has comic timing coming out the wazoo, and I wish that we saw more of him in S8.

Jonathan Giles

My favourite ending yet lol. Not even Death can stand up to Rimmer!!!!! I really enjoy the later seasons so exciting times ahead people 🤗

Susan K Dailey Photography

I don't know why they changed it... maybe they had an inkling the BBC was getting ready to drop them so they decided to leave it on a cliffhanger in the hope they'd get another chance to wrap it all up? I'm in the minority that enjoyed the next season so I'm looking forward to seeing what you make of it!

Katrine Myra

I am so behind on these reactions - I'm about to board a train, so I'm going to try to download a few and watch on my way to Chicago. Can't wait to see this one!

Jack Rogers

I have loved red dwarf since around 10 I had the dvds and I had no idea that ending existed.

James Cluskey

The last episode went through some massive changes. Originally it was to be a two parter with the second part being called Earth and would have ended with them crash landing on what remains of Earth. After the budget issues meant they had to extend Back in the Red and Pete, they had to adjust Only the Good to be a single part. They had the original ending which was filmed but they weren't happy with it. They then decided to re-shoot and have Ace Rimmer save the human Rimmer at the end of the episode. They had the costume ready but late on decided to change it to kicking Death in the bollocks. They also considered ending it on the shot of the paper burning. They spent the next few years trying to get the movie off the ground. They did go back to the BBC to try to get a Series IX made a couple of years later but they said "the BBC are no longer interested in the audience Red Dwarf used to attract". This despite Red Dwarf VIII being the highest rated sitcom in BBC Two's history when it aired.

Troy Convers

There's an alternate ending where the Dwarfers survive, and indeed even find themselves in a similar situation to the earlier series of Red Dwarf, was scripted and filmed but cut at the last minute, which is a shame as it's far more fitting. It's on the series VIII DVD special features; here's a link to it on YT: https://youtu.be/YQDQ2EbnK1E?si=CK1rs1D0g0BsmpQG There's another ending where (sigh) Ace is the cloaked figure and as he should out his hand, you would have just seen the jacket arm and it fades to black. But this was never filmed. Now that would have been a cliffhanger.

Michael

You’re right about the actor (David Verrey) , he played one of the Slitheen in Doctor Who .

Hell3Quin

5:16< I'm totally with you about Cap hollister, I personally did consider him as a fan "beloved" character until recently (?) I do think he was better in the pilot. Much better, more natural. I can say with 100% accuracy that his staccato delivery isn't due to a fear that he might be understood. Hollister would be understood everywhere in the UK its what we consider a baseline accent rather than a US regional. I think its being done to place emphasis in his annoyance with Lister & Rimmer. Whether thats a personal choice or directional one I dunno. Edit: I just now remember that Mac McDonald has been a regular representing RD at conventions for some time so it could be more that fans have had a chance to meet and talk to him (I once had to interrupt Norman Lovett chatting football to a bunch of girls off the side to ask for a autograph at his autograph table & I felt like a dick).

Brodie Vickers

Since you're on the subject, and if it's not too sensitive a question, I'm curious: How old are you Paula?🙂I've always just figured for you to be in your late 20's, though I remember you mentioning at one point, that you were in middle school or something in 2003, I would have been in Year 3 (3rd Grade) by that time and I'm 28! As I said, just curious..😉

Brodie Vickers

Speaking of which, any more 'Behind the Scenes' reactions coming up? You two need to catch up! haha

Stuart Cork

Yes but I was trying to keep it simple, UKTV do operate as a separate entity, their 'original programming' is not under the whims of the BBC controllers. To all intents and purposes the Red Dwarf which follows after series 8 is a different production.

Raven Stromdans

Glad to stick a fork in Series VIII...I think I agree that the addition of the persistent extra characters, while themselves not necessarily uninteresting or fun in their own ways, detracted from the show as a whole. I actually liked this series more than I remembered liking it when I originally watched it, but it still remains the weakest series of the show's entire run in my opinion. Looking forward to the next stage of the series, which I feel tends to be a bit divisive, but I actually enjoyed. Keep Calm and Smeg On! I'll be here with Mr. Flibble, desperately trying to pronounce the ridiculously long chemical compounds in these kippers. These...these are kippers, aren't they Mr. Flibble?

Raven Stromdans

Same. It has a very different feel from the rest of the show, but I genuinely enjoyed what they did.

Mark Ten

You never tried the kippers I sent you- I DONT BLAME YOU!

Troy Convers

Best to watch it on one hit because of the pacing and the through lines.

Troy Convers

Graham McTavish is starring in the upcoming Spartacus spin off with Lucy Lawless; indirect RD/BSG crossover!

Hell3Quin

A problem with the other ending is that all the other prisoners not just them get left behind (plot hole ln the broadcast version) so they aren't the only ones still on Red Dwarf and its really a big narrative problem.

Troy Convers

The end of 4:3 SD Dwarf too,.

Mark Ten

Cant wait till series 10. There! I said it

Robert Gendron

Do you know how you're going to split Back to Earth up?

Mark Ten

I think I started watching you on the old channel just as you were finishing Eccleston (went back & caught up). Ive enjoyed the trip.

Hell3Quin

The 2nd episode being on earth actually would have made sense bc the novels had already done that before s8.

Hell3Quin

There's a massive plot hole in that all the prisoners have been left behind not just them. They probably realised that too late. Also Kochanski or Kryten could just have gone through the mirror & memorised the formula.

Stuart Cork

I'm looking forward to Paula and Kat's thoughts on series 9. I don't want to watch the episodes again, I just want to see how they deal with it. Does that make me a sadist?!

Frank Murphy

What is this fabled series 9 you talk of? I know no series 9

Troy Convers

Back to Earth. It's not bad.

Troy Convers

The broadcast version was shown in three parts.

Frank Murphy

They are all great reactions

Paul Flux

I haven't watched S8 since it first aired. It's been fun revisiting it with Kat and Paula. It definitely ran out of steam a bit. Still some good gags but the narrative is pretty messy in the last few episodes. This was the last season that I watched, too. I saw a bit of BTE/S9E1 when it aired, but didn't get on with it, and never reconnected with any of the later Dave seasons, so from here on in I'll be discovering it alongside the gals.

Frank Murphy

Shame bbc iplayer coverage ends here. Rest available on UK (formerly known as UKTV)

Jade Ellis

Yeah, sadly though series 9 doesn't seem to be available on there. In fact I can't seem to find anywhere with series 9 available.

Troy Convers

It's on the Sky platform if you have that.

John Veitch

Watching s8 along with you has lurched me back to my formative years as a teenager at the turn of the millennium.

Robin D

Just a note for Season 9/BTE: I strongly recommend watching Blade Runner (1982) beforehand if you haven't seen it already as the plot of BTE draws strong inspiration from the film - though I can't say more due to spoilers. There are also some jokes in BTE that are direct parodies of Blade Runner scenes. I haven't watched BTE since it aired, but I do remember the lack of a laugh track being jarring and taking some time to get used to - so be prepared for that adjustment too.

Nolan

She did say, 21 years ago she graduated. If in the US that happens at 18 years old.

Mab7373822

I actually prefer the broadcast ending. Its messier and doesn't resolve anything, but thematically there is something here I really like. Back in series one, Rimmer dies in a horrible accident, his pathetic last words "Gaspacho Soup" sum up that he lived as a loser, and died as a loser. He meets Death, useless, impotent and unremarkable. This was a man with nothing to live for. For this Rimmer, he (relunctantly) puts his selfishness aside and returns with his friends to save the lives of the Red Dwarf crew. He then bravely tries to navigate the mirror universe by himself to save the day. When this version of Rimmer meets death, his second death, he somehow transcends the metaphysical and defiantly and confidently kicks Death in the testicles, and runs away leaving the supernatural entity in agony. Perhaps this is because he has died before? Or perhaps this Rimmer is just such a bastard that even the dignity of accepting death is beyond such a weasel. Either way, what he does is remarkable, clearly a man with something to live for.

Mab7373822

As for Series 8 as a whole, I think you guys liked it more than I did. I legitimately liked Cassandra, Only the Good, and some of Back in the Red Part 1. The rest, not so much. I did like Captain Hollister, Kill Crazy and Warden Ackerman. But this is where I think Doug Naylor went wrong: Red Dwarf is meant to be a lonely show. It is our small cadre of funny characters against a bitterly cold universe, sometimes battling their own inner demons, and sometimes trying to survive remenant human technologies such as Simulants, GELFs, nanobots and gestalt entities. The comedy comes from our funny heroes reacting to serious science fiction concepts, their novel solutions and baffling escapes and escapades. There was a believable science fiction credibility to the universe that, juxtaposed with the comedy of our heroes, caused television greatness to emerge. Series 8 loses that. Everyone is trying to be a comedy character. Every scenario is trying, sometimes too hard, to be funny, at the expense of sci fi credibility. Look how concepts such as the Time Wand and the Mirror Universe are brought in with little care or worldbuilding. Previous series - usually if not always - would have given these plot points some proper development. The balance was all wrong. The fundemental principle of the series - that Dave Lister is the last human - is jetissoned because it is funny to inexplicably put the Red Dwarf crew into prison. The experimental series - 7, 8 and 9 - are interesting, and sometimes good, sometimes not. However, your reactions have always been brilliant. Thanks so much for sharing them with the world.

Chris Devlin

I think season 8 easily remains my least favourite of the initial 8 series. Unlike 7, which I think has only grown on me over time despite it's ups and downs. Series 8 has some decent moments, but it's also just bad in places. Krytie TV and Pete Part 2 especially are just not good. Only The Good does mean it ends on something of a high-note though. The change in the dynamic, bringing back the crew was an interesting idea, but I don't think they really pulled it off in an interesting way. It's also the first series where I just thought parts of it were plain unfunny. After it became clear we weren't getting another series anytime soon I think I moved into my "let it die" phase (Which I've never really came out of to be honest) and this is where my love affair of the show came to a conclusion. By the time it came back 10 years later I had moved on, I'd grown up and my tastes had changed. Which is just a longer way of saying that the series that are still to come I've not seen anywhere near as much. In fact most of it from this point on I've seen once, or not at all (For the last two series and the special). So I'm excited to see where we go with this and to see how the newer stuff does. I do agree that series 9/BTE is probably best done in one go rather than split into the three episodes. Oh and yeah the guy Kat recognised played the first Slitheen we saw in "Aliens of London" from Ecclestons season of Who. There's a load of crossover between the two shows, in terms of actors and crew, but even the Classic Who era and Newer stuff. There's even a TARDIS hidden in one of the model shots from Demons and Angels.

pbaker

The episode was shown in 1999 and the alternate ending was released in 2006 so it was a slow reveal.

Skyrous

Don't think too hard about continuity here they just handwave it anyway. Series 9 was for me the low point of the Red Dwarf I watched it once, laughed once and haven't seen it since. I'm going to watch again with you and see if I'm remembering wrong. But don't worry series 10 onward is pretty good.

Ross Nolan

During the long hiatus between Series 8 and Back to Earth (ie. Series 9) Deep Seven published Red Dwarf the Roleplaying Game. Essentially the idea was the players were on an alternate timeline derelict in deep space with options for playing the 'last human', holograms, evolved pets (not just cats and dogs, but rabbits, rats, mice or iguanas), mechanoids, wax droids and so on. The Game Master took the role of Holly or whatever the equivalent ships computer happened to be. It also had Series 8 stats for Lister, rimmer, Cat, Kryten, Kochanski and the various minor npcs and equipment. It's been out of print for about twenty years so I guess there isn't much chance of tracking it down now but it looked pretty fun, even if I never got a chance to play it.

Wilss

Will you be watching the boys from the Dwarf on 'Can't Smeg, Won't Smeg'? A spoof on a popular UK cooking competition show called 'Can't Cook, Won't Cook'. It aired around the time Series 8 was recorded for a Red Dwarf evening on the BBC. Definitely worth a watch.

Aaron Funnell

It's on UKTV's streaming service.

Mark Ten

Of course they were

Mark Ten

Three episodes (also shown as a single movie) called Back To Earth

Mark Ten

IDK, I think being eager to watch series 9 qualifies as masochism, but thats just me.

Hell3Quin

It is better if you read it that Rimmer is such a lowly weasel that Death wasn't expecting the kick in the nads rathsr than noone had tried it before

Hell3Quin

I was going ro save saying this for Paula & Kat until after s9 but reading Robert Llewellyn's memoir The Man in The Rubber Mask is a gold mine of behind fhe scene info 👍

Troy Convers

My brain keeps equating BTE to Being The Elite! 😄

Troy Convers

Kryten says why only Rimmer could do it.

Troy Convers

Be careful what you wish for. Series X's production quality looks WEIRD.

Travis Boyle

This episode had some pretty good stuff but it does feel rushed. Like they just had the mirror universe device out of the blue. Feels like this should of been the two parter. Personally liked the ending they didn't use better. Mirror Lister is in the deleted scenes. I assume the idea for the next season that didn't materialize was that it would of been in the mirror universe. I agree with Kat though I'm glad to move on from Series 8.

Sebastian Bodine

I'm going to have to disagree with a statement in the front of the video. I do not believe that "Faster and Louder" makes for great comedy as a rule. There can be exceptions, but, to me, great comedy is like great horror. The tension is what drives it. Some of the best comedies aren't all that loud or trying to jam a joke in at every possible moment like Dr. Strangelove succeed because there's a comedic tension there. I'm not saying that the second part of Pete wasn't bloated. I just fundamentally don't think that a person should aim to be comedic by having a bunch of jokes at a high volume and frequency because that's a fast way to become loud and obnoxious.

Sebastian Bodine

"Cat looks good in the dress" Of course, he might be embarrassed but he'd never be unfashionable

Sebastian Bodine

I do think both endings are good, but clearly the more complete one they initially shot is better. I think other ending does reflect better on the uncertainty that this show would ever come back. The BBC can be cruel to their science fiction shows.

tal goren

there is also the question of what happened to 'genius' Holy who was on the captain side. they wouldn't have been able to take over the ship with him in control.

Katrine Myra

I won't pretend to be impartial when it comes to Mac McDonald; he's a sweetheart, and I genuinely do love him in Red Dwarf. That said, I completely understand not seeing him working in this. I blame the production - direction, editing, what have you. Series VIII suffers from being... unfinished, in a lot of ways. And yes, a lot of it makes absolutely no sense. The Grim Reaper thing just annoys me; I understand the symbolism, but it just does not fit into what has until that point been a relatively realism-based SF comedy show. I like the original ending, and I really wish they would have kept it. That said, I am super excited that you're now close to covering my favorite (well, second favorite) series! :D

Troy Convers

RIP Tony Slattery (voice of the vending machine). ❤️

Chris K

And that's it! Goodbye to Living Rimmer, the Red Dwarf crew, Kochanski, the prison setting, and any notion of continuing that massive cliffhanger. At least Series 6's was finally continued! The alternative ending makes so much more sense, although I forgot how jarring and out of nowhere the Mirror Universe reveal was. I always assumed that Talia was going to be more important, as she suspiciously appeared in the escape pod... but who knows, probably not. This episode and series was such a mess.
