Don't care what anyone says. This trilogy is amazing. Can't wait to rewatch with the GG crew!!!!!!!

Matthew Hanlon

Is this on any UK streaming services, they’re gone from iplayer?

Cedric Bombs

I don't remember if they give a proper in-show explanation as to what happened with the ending of season 8 and what the situation is with hologram-Rimmer so I'll hold off on that, but this mini-series and series 10 are definitely something of a soft-reboot, a bit like the jump from series 2 to 3 I'm not the biggest fan of Back to Earth, especially because of how it felt at the time after a 10 year gap with no Red Dwarf content, but series 10 onwards is great IMO

Frank Murphy

It was on uktv now UK but someone said it wasn't, but someone also said its on sky somewhere

Raven Stromdans

I think the primary problem y'all are having with this, aside from the wild change in the presentation, is that this really wasn't designed to be watched in segments; in clear defiance of the way it's presented here, it *should* 100% be watched all at once. Like you identified early on, this was structured as a movie, not really a series of episodes. I watched it all the way through all at once the first time I watched it and while I was thrown by the presentation (the change in editing, the lack of laugh-track/audience laughter, the increased use of CGI), it definitely feels as though it worked way better watched all at once rather than broken into episodes. Looking forward to your reactions to what this little movie does as it continues. Keep Calm and Smeg On, Gallifrey Pals! Mr. Flibble and I will be here smoking all the kippers to console you until the next episode!

Frank Murphy

I enjoyed it on first viewing

Michael

I agree with Paula, I hated the fact that there was no explanation for what happened at the end of series 8.

Paul Flux

Well done for committing to push through this series! I failed to do so when it first aired. I didn't like it much, it definitely felt like the magic was gone, and I never got around to watching any of the subsequent series even though they got better reviews. So from here on I'll be discovering 21st century Red Dwarf along with you two!

Lizbeth Marcs

Back to Earth defender checking in! The mini-series is head-scratching on first watch but is very enjoyable on the second watch once you figure out where they're headed. It's fashionable to crap on the Back to Earth mini, but I think it's because people had so many high and different expectations of it that no matter what happened it was never going to measure up (just like I'm pretty sure people are going to hate the movie part of Community's six-seasons-and-a-movie schtick). At the time Back to Earth aired, it got huuuuuuge ratings and did exactly what it set out to do: rebooted Red Dwarf as a going concern (with all the good and bad that entails), showed there was a built-in audience for more Red Dwarf, led directly to the commissioning of more series, and convinced the cast that doing more would be a fun time for them (none of them at this point need to do it for the money). As for getting answers: BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! No. There will be no answers. The only thing we'll eventually learn is that Dave!Era Rimmer has the memories of both OG Rimmer and Nano!Rimmer -- but apparently no memories of being Ace!Rimmer. Doug Naylor has only said that Dave!Era Rimmer is (at least in part) OG Rimmer, but has left wiggle room on whether Dave!Era Rimmer is the same Rimmer that actually became Ace and he just returned home and slid into his old spot, or if the Red Dwarf crew simply pulled OG Rimmer's back-up disk and combined it with Nano!Rimmer's personality disc after Nano!Rimmer died. Confused? So is everyone else! Which is why there's still an ongoing debate over just WHO Dave!Era Rimmer actually is. (I go with the back-up disk combo myself based on how Chris Barrie plays Dave!Era Rimmer. I seem to recall that some fans that attended a convention where he was doing a Q&A said he confirmed that this was how he was playing Rimmer in the newer episodes — but that's hearsay.) As for what happened to Kochanski: That's something that comes down to real life getting in the way. Chloe Arnett left acting completely and for whatever reason, they decided not to recast the role again.

Abigail

worth noting that this story was broadcast on three successive days (Friday/Saturday/Sunday) over Easter 2009.

Susan K Dailey Photography

I really enjoy this three-parter, yes it is very different from the rest of the series in that it's not a sitcom (though they forget that from time to time), but it's still good. The fandom was so mad we never got an answer about what happened at the end series 8, I think it's part of why this special was so poorly received (personally I was just happy to have Red Dwarf back!). It was also never meant to be more episodes - it was meant to be a TV special, a retrospective on the first 8 series, but after that was greenlit, they pushed for this instead, but with no added budget, hence all the green screen, and a lot of the stuff that you'll probably have already seen in the next two parts. There wasn't going to be a skutter as there was no budget to build one - the skutter is only there because a fan offered to make a cgi one for free (yes, really!). We have learned some bits and pieces about the gap in time over the years, but no full explanation as yet. As for why we're back to hologram Rimmer, that's much the same on-screen, though Doug Naylor did do some clarification in an interview (not really a spoiler of consequence - but he is the original hologram Rimmer, but seems to have the memories of series 8 Rimmer too). As far as I know, the actress who plays Kochanski retired from acting.

Jade Ellis

I've looked through Sky. al the series are there except this one.

Lizbeth Marcs

There's dozens of us who love it. DOZENS!

Brodie Vickers

That's a reference to 'The Simpsons' more specifically, good ol' Ned Flanders. That show is SO not dated, it's eternal... well, at least seasons 1-10. People have problems with this trilogy, but I'm not one of them. I can remember being so excited when this 1st aired, back when I was 13/14

Alex Bennett

the pacing problem with back to earth is at least in part due to the orginal being pland as a two pater only later was a 3rd episode added. other trvia but this was the first time Red dwarf was filmd in HD. also Sophie Winkleman who plays Katerina is part of the royal family as she is maride to a cousin of King Charles III.

Nolan

The pacing is better in the Director's Cut where they didn't have to stretch to fill individual episode lengths. They really honed it down to a decent film length. And that's probably why the editing is off. Kinda wish you'd watched that version instead. Oh well.

Lemmy's Mole

Sophie Winkleman.. aka Lady Frederick Windsor (married to the King's 2nd cousin)

Brodie Vickers

I went to Dailymotion, all 3 eps are up there

Troy Convers

I'm going to disagree with EVERYTHING you said in your sum up. Gals, as Doctor Who fans you're being hypocritical with the need for continuity considering that Who plays fast and loose with it's own canon. Red Dwarf at this point is the longest running Sci-fi series with the original cast, started when Reagan was president, Thatcher was PM, Sylvester McCoy was The Doctor and TNG was still filling its nappies. The point is that, you well know, it always played fast and loose with it's own continuity and canon over it's initial 11 year run, and BTE is effectively a soft reboot, given that 10 years had passed since RD ended; HD, 16:9 and Dave (yeah we know still partly the BBC at this point) are the hard points for it's rebirth; the crew are gone again, Rimmer is a hologram again (my head canon tells me the can from the vending machine killed him in 'Only the Good'), Kochanski is 'dead' and there's more money for better effects, the last point being a constant throughout RD's evolution. Dave wanted to make more series and treated BTE as a TV film/pilot, but split over three consecutive nights on Easter weekend 2009. As such, the pacing, like 'Back in the Red' is slower paced and tells a different story as such. As single eps it's a bit gawky, and you should really have seriously considered watching all three parts as a single piece, as it's presented in the box set. Frankly, you sound smug, self-righteous, and it's going to be so funny watching your reactions at the end of ep 3. 🤷‍♂️

Troy Convers

I fucking HATED BTE when it first came out; I only rewatched it about two months ago and forgave it almost everything. It will never be top 10 Dwarf in my book, but I respect it enormously.

Troy Convers

I love the character; reminiscent of the Russian holographic officer on the holoship.

Frank Murphy

It's on daily motion if anyone's stuck

Yoshio

I've been watching RD since the early 90's with my family (RD and Black Adder are among our all time favs) and we were excited when we found out about BTE. We had no expectations and greatly enjoyed it, we were happy to just get anything. While I've watched RD many times, I haven't watched it for the last 10 years or so, I kind of got watched out. So it's been a great joy to watch it with you and see it through fresh eyes. So... I can't remember if you'll get the answers you're seeking, I want to know the answers too. I've only seen BTE that one time and I've forgotten most of it. I know it's not a fan favorite and it's supposed to get better after this (I haven't seen anything after BTE) so I'll just try to enjoy the good aspects of it and I can't wait to get to the newer stuff.

Yoshio

Good to know. I'll have to watch the Director's Cut after this.

Ross Nolan

Katerina is played by Sophie Winkleman, probably best known for the long running British sitcom 'Peep Show'. She tends to play posh funny types... and is one in real life since she's married into the Royal Family (her technical title is Lady Frederick Windsor.)

Bret Hart

And we've reached the point where it's all new to me as well. After series 8 finished in 1999, I never came back. I get to do my first time watches with the Pals! Boy howdy I'm as confused as you two are by this one. But we'll carry on!

James Cluskey

Back to Earth had a ridiculously low budget with many favours called in to get it made. It had the budget of a clip show, which was the original intention. It then became a four part special (a two parter called Back to Earth, a live show and a making of) before the live episode was dropped and a third episode was added for Back to Earth. They couldn't afford an audience, despite wanting one. They considered doing it Series VII style by recording the laughter later but the timescales were so tight, they couldn't manage it. They do address the end of Series VIII but just not straight away. Be patient. It is worth it.

Frank Murphy

I mean 2 things cover most red dwarf questions 1 the writing is up n down and crucially 2 rule of funny

rocketdave

I don't appreciate the people who were expressing the view that there's no need to watch past series 6. For one, as someone who enjoys practically all of Red Dwarf, I definitely don't agree with that opinion. Even if they think they're just being helpful, I'd prefer they not try to negatively influence first-time watchers and let them make up their own minds. Having said all that, I will admit that I consider Back to Earth to be the lowest point in Red Dwarf's run. That's not to say that there's nothing good about it, but if this had been the last hurrah for the Boyz from the Dwarf, it would be a disappointing final outing. Thankfully, the subsequent series are pretty much a return to form, imho.

Mark Ten

Tapping my foot in anticipation for series 10. Hang on for 3 more weeks.

Bruce Bromley

I have read that Clare Grogan wasn't asked back to RD because she was deemed too old. By whom I do not know.

Troy Convers

No-one wanted her back because she treated people like crap.

Lizbeth Marcs

See, this is exactly where I am, as well. It's not a Top 10, but I like it better than half of Series 7 and one-third of Series 8. What it does, it does it very well. Not to mention that the fact they pulled it off on a shoe-string budget and TWO HOURS of rehearsal time for the actors? It's amazing we got anything at all.

Stuart Cork

Where does that information come from?

Chris Fone

There is an explanation for what happened between Season 8 and this...after the end credits of the last episode of Season 10. You'll get there.

Troy Convers

From the mouth of DJJ to a friend of his when he and his missus were with Craig who was DJing after a Bobby Womack concert at the Jazz Café. That was some conversation I overheard. 😳

Troy Convers

Yep, we weren't waiting weeks.

Chris Devlin

I remember hating this first time around. Had all the same complaints as Paula and Kat. I definitely enjoyed it more on a rewatch and given the three-part nature of it I think binging it is probably the best way to get through it. Despite it being counted as Series 9, it was always more of a special and watching it all in one go helps.

Troy Convers

I would have loved to have seen the Red Dwarf: Unplugged ep actually happen.

Stuart Cork

Not knowing how far in advance of posting a video Kat and Paula record it, I can only assume that Paula has since worked out that Back to Earth was meant to be treated like a pilot for a soft reboot rather than a direct continuation of the 8th series. If not you do now.

GillyBean

that last part is uncalled for, the gals are allowed to react however they need. Its a major difference, after a previous season that DID have continuity. totally understandable on their end

GillyBean

totally with you! I wasnt a fan of these, and i think i stopped watching after season 10. Im gonna stick with yall through to the end though!

Eric Aitala

I was never really concerned about continuity when it came to Red Dwarf....

Makhiel

I guess I'm weird but apart from knowing what Season 8 ending is this actually supposed to follow up on I don't have issues with the "continuity". Rimmer is hologram because he died, again, but I don't see how knowing how he died helps in any major way. Likewise, Kochanski is dead, and the cause of her death isn't important to the story. And I thought the hologram was explained, the ship decided Rimmer wasn't doing his intended job (or maybe the dimension-hopping octopus changed the status quo) and so it activated a different hologram. We know the ship/Holly is in charge of that.

Hell3Quin

33:37-33:57 just watching Kat tangle that headphone cable...

Hell3Quin

Actually Holly is functionally dead so it got to be the dimension hopping octopus, 'at this point'.

Hell3Quin

Definately needed a laugh track but if this didnt happen then we wouldnt have the later seasons. Which I think are really good.

Hell3Quin

Adverse to comedy past the 90's then? Seasons 10, 11 & 12 are good.

Hell3Quin

Now that you are past this I highly recommend that you read Robert Llewellyn's memoir The Man In The Rubber Mask for some excellent behind the scenes info. It was written after this & before the newer series.

Hell3Quin

Oh I remember watching this as a tele movie, not a mini series. Also they cut the scene of Lister crying. There was originally a front shot with his head held back. This was literally meant to be watch all in one go. I was really confused when this started to be referred to as an actual season!!?! This was always a telemovie punt by the new channel owners to restart the series. Dave Channel, not BBC. I liked it at the time. You won't understand any of the earth references bc its about Craig Charles being in Coronation Street for several years at this point. (Corry is legit one of the longest running shows in the world & has multuple episodes per week, its a big deal here). :edited as I thought of stuff. Thats why its staccato.

Troy Convers

It's still the BBC, just the commercial arm.

Troy Convers

Even that starts a bit rough.

GillyBean

Not at all, some of my fave comedy’s are from 00s. And I was born in the 90s so that would be silly of me haha Just didn’t vibe with it at the time for whatever reason. But that was a long time ago so maybe I’ll enjoy it this time :)

Sebastian Bodine

It really sucks that they couldn't just do it all in one block like a movie because that's clearly what they were intending.

Hell3Quin

Dave isnt the bbc.

Hell3Quin

I remember it being released as such. I watched it all in one go. I hate how things are now being edited after launch.

Ross Nolan

I'm kind of fascinated what they'll make of the 'Coronation Street' angle.

Geraint Harrison

I understand Paula's concern's but this is Red Dwarf, it takes the piss and doesn't expect the Audience to nit-pick the continuity, and if they do, they're always roasted by Doug Naylor lol, remember how many times they've travelled time, jumped dimension, changed history... who's to say this is even the same red dwarf crew as we saw last time. There's no series 9 because of production issues at the time however there's an in universe explanation comintg up. I do have head canon about what happened to Rimmer though; He already died by the can's blunt force trauma, that's why death was there. THAT Rimmer is wandering about purgatory. THE REST OF IT IS EXPLAINED IN THE COMING EPISODES.

Troy Convers

That's my head canon too. That would also mean 'our' Ace Rimmer is out there somewhere; and I don't care what that smegging smegger Naylor says to the contrary. 😂

Troy Convers

They'll hate it. Paula's got a strop on already because Kochanski is dead. 😂

Hell3Quin

Huh, my bubble is burst. Then why the bullshit where they keep removing the later seasons from iplayer? I had to buy BTE from amazon (a bit salty about that)

Hell3Quin

Plus Lister keeps referring to himself as the last himan alive & he very clearly is not.

Hell3Quin

To be fair I liked it as an in joke when it aired.

Geraint Harrison

Exactly, continuety isn't this shows priority.

tal goren

at least they were planning to watch all the episode at the same day, so they would watch it like a movie, even if the reactions would be separated.

tal goren

also the gals said they don't mind 'episodic' discontinuity, which is what is happening in doctor who. what they are complaining about here is a complete change of the status quo with no explanation. basically, if the next series of Doctor Who would inexplicably start with Gallifrey and the time lords being completely fine and the Doctor being the lord president, the gals would complain a lot.

Travis Boyle

I liked it better on repeat viewings because you know the gimmick for why all the weird stuff happens. My head canon for Rimmer is the Series 8 version died and Holly merged his hologram with a backup Rimmer file that survived the Starbug crash. That way it gives Rimmer all his memories from all the series but doesn't ruin his arc as Ace.

Travis Boyle

I read that as strap on. Lol.

Troy Convers

Blade Runner, that obscure art house indie film that inspired Grant & Naylor to create Red Dwarf?

Absent With Concept

The "official" reason there's no explanation of the end of VIII is because it's only an hour long, and Doug didn't want to spend any of that tying up loose ends. He just wanted to crack on with an anniversary special. The actual official reason is Doug wrote himself into a corner with no plan of how to get out of it, and at one point wasn't even bothered – he was hoping to do a reboot film series in the '00s – and realised he couldn't come up with a good enough resolution. It does get a kind of answer in a future episode, but don't expect much from it. VIII wasn't highly rated by a lot of fans and BtE came along a decade later, the truth is a lot of people weren't clamouring for an answer, they just wanted some new adventures. My reaction to BtE was very similar to yours - indeed, one of a lot of anger after part 2, which I absolutely loathed. It wasn't until a few years later that I came back to it and realised that I quite like it in places. After VIII's very broad, cartoony humour and complete lack of the pathos and character stuff from the earlier series, it feels nice to get back to the four regulars, with a story that is tied to their characters, and has some genuine emotion to it. There are still some very tired jokes, and honestly I don't think it works very well as a comedy in general, but as a Red Dwarf character-based story, I can enjoy it. And just to agree with everyone else, it's so much better in the Director's Cut. I haven't bothered with it episodically since broadcast, other than when I was scoring the episodes for a poll on Ganymede & Titan.

Troy Convers

Forgot to add this about the memorial headstone. From the RD Wiki: "The identities of the individuals in the photographs at the base of the Memorial Stone are as follows: - Former Dwarfer Kochanski (Chloë Annett) to the right - George McIntyre (actor Robert McCulley from the "The End") to the far left - In-between there is a photograph of Mel Bibby, who was the Production Designer for Red Dwarf Series III-VIII, who died in 2002. - In behind-the-scenes photos, Arnold Rimmer's photo appears twice on the opposite side of the headstone; one photo seems to be pre-accident, and the other seems to be the nanobot-reconstructed Rimmer."

Katrine Myra

OMG here we gooo...! I'm posting this before watching - I've made no secret of the fact that Back to Earth (as a whole) is one of my top three RD series. SUPER excited for this. Eeeep.

Katrine Myra

Absolutely. It's not even comparable. I was shocked watching this; I had completely forgotten how different it was.

Katrine Myra

Woah there! Begging your pardon, but that's one heck of a response to the pals specifically and directly asking for our support through something they (thus far) do not personally care for. Furthermore, this is a complete misrepresentation of what they were saying: They went out of their way to make it clear that they don't mind if people don't care about continuity. This episode simply had way too little for _their personal tastes_. I agree that watching BTE episodically like this makes it appear to make less sense and also messes with the pacing, editing, and a lot of the other things the pals were complaining about, but how in the world could Kat and Paula be expected to know that? It makes a lot more sense, from their perspectives, to watch the series in episodic format. They are not to blame for the fact that something which is available in two different formats, only really works as intended in one of the two. I'm sorry if any of this comes across as crass, but your last paragraph especially is absolutely uncalled for.

Katrine Myra

Imagine me if you will, Kat and Paula, as I eagerly watched along with you, enjoying the rewatch of one of my favorite series and sympathizing with your confusion - and then THAT ENDING. No, not your take on the episode; the literal end. It's been so long since I've watched BTE in episodic format that I'd forgotten how absolutely wild the editing choices are. Yes, Back to Earth was shot and intended to be watched in one, but there is absolutely no excuse for ending the episode like that. Had they chosen to cut just a few moments later, I feel like this would have gone a long way to help you see what the plot was trying to do. I literally had to take a bit of a break before coming back to comment. Your confusion and frustration is absolutely understandable. BTE does not at all work - in my opinion - in an episodic format. As you both noted, it is similar to a movie in a lot of ways, for better or worse, and this informs the editing and pacing. Taking that and trying to shoehorn it into a mini-series format is hard, and they did an absolutely terrible job of it, in my opinion. However, this is one of my favorite series of Red Dwarf. Here's why: I'll have to wait for the last episode to go into detail, but to me BTE is a love letter to Lister's character, and the show itself. I feel like the conversation it attempts to have with the viewer about identity, character, ethics and motivation is both important and long overdue. A common critique of Red Dwarf's earlier series is that Lister doesn't see Kochanski as a person, but more as emblematic of the idea of his eventual return to Earth; a symbol of hope, but not in a good way. And I feel like BTE digs into that in a great and satisfying way. I'm one of the few people who preferred the opening credits of series I and II, as well as the feel of the huge, vacant ship and sense of isolation, and I feel like BTE does an excellent job of showing that. I love the costumes - I know many will disagree, but this is my absolute favorite Rimmer uniform - and I saw you both admired Cat's absolutely iconic diving suit. The characters, on the whole, feel more like themselves than they did in series VIII - I understand and see your critique of the end result, but this is less about the performance than the essence of the characters, if that make sense? Possibly not, I'm VERY jetlagged. Finally - I see a lot of people commenting that none of your questions will be answered, and one or two saying everything will be answered, neither of which is the case. Post-BTE there is one huge question that remains unanswered, but we do eventually - albeit very late in the game - get something of a nod to that. Hang in there, pals! I'm so happy to re-watch this with y'all, and eager to hear your final thoughts after episode 3. :D

BazT47

According to the creators this Rimmer is the one who left to be Ace. Apparently he got bored and came back!
