Uhoh, It's Black Market everyone lol - curious what the Gals make of this one :D need to hype myself up to watch it first though.

Troy Convers

Quite frankly, a better episode than I gave it credit for. I routinely skipped over Black Market on rewatches as it's a bottle episode that (spoilers) leads nowhere. But, I have new respect for the episode. It's not only a deep dive into the BSG world's deep lore and it's wider society, something we get precious little of), but it's also a deeper dive into the mind of Lee Adama; how his near death experience leads him away from healthier relationships like Dee and Starbuck and the illusion of one with a call girl named Shevon, and memories of Gianne, his estranged fiancée and the father he could have been, a fiancée that he did dirty. If ever you thought that Lee was a saint, this episode will dispel that notion, forever. The ep has structural problems, boy howdy; doing the old trope of putting the end of the ep at the start is pure Heart of Darkness, robbing us of the spectacle of the slow unveiling of Lee's descent into the fleet's underbelly and his struggles with his own demons. And trying to wrap up the idea of why the black market is necessary in one ep instead of revisiting the idea on occasion ends up being a massive wasted opportunity. Speaking of which, it's a tragic waste of the great Bill Duke; I would have loved to see him in a recurring role. Still, at least we see Gauis' on the periphery of what is going on, which is bang on brand for him. And Fisk being offed so soon after Cain will have repercussions; if nothing else about the man, he wasted no time networking with the fleet's dodgy characters! The writers really wanted to portray the precarious existence of everyday people in the fleet, but somehow the story got away from them; it's not as well executed as it should have been. A shame.

Yeah am not too far off this myself, its not as bad as is made out for sure - but like the Ellen ep in S1 it just kinda feels weird tonally and as a kind of episodic ep I kinda wish it didn't exist just to improve the momentum of the show. When I do watch I'm always more positive on it than my residual opinion of it. But I could do without it being there still tbh. Then again I'm a Breaking Bad Fly hater, not sure if you get that reference but I just want the plot to thunder on and any insular episode that doesn't push it forward more significantly is always at a disadvantage for being looked forward to by me. BSG has some great standalone non serialized eps I'd rate very highly, but few of them I actually really look forward to and feel like obstacles to be navigated to get to the big plotty eps that move the narrative on.

Nolan

Oh man, two reactors I follow release their uncut BSG reactions on the same day... and this week I get to choose between Black Market and Colonial Day to watch first. Great...

Locoturbo

Someone said RDM kept apologizing for this episode? Not quite sure I get why. Obviously not perfect - some of those flashbacks were replayed TOO many times, and some of the characterization and line reads are slightly off, although I still think it's generally quite good. Maybe it's grown on me after so many views, but I think it's at least above average. - checking the wiki, I am definitely in the minority on this!

Mike Connaghan

I know where to get you some BSG episodes cheap. Tell no one.

Mike Connaghan

Hear me out: Gallifrey Gorillaz. That'll keep your lawyers busy.

Time Lord

Apologies to everyone about the slightly weird audio is today's edit! Truly I changed *no* settings in Premiere and it just chose to do something all on it's own?? I checked the rest of this weeks edits and nothing else got effected. So shoutout to editing programs being smegheads! - Kat

Speaking of the different versions of Six, there are many individual Sixes each with their own personalities. If you pay close attention, it's not hard to tell which one is which. The Six that protected Giaus on Caprica when the bombs fell absolutely died, but as she said in that episode she just woke up in a new body somewhere else. All of the Cylons are individuals with unique personalities, much like twins or triplets are. If a specific Six dies that individual personality may reappear in a new body - same personality. Same individual. Oh, and THERE ... ARE .... FOUR ... SEASONS!!! (plus Razor).

I disagree with the view that regulations are needed to prevent this, I actually think the inverse is more accurate, regulations are what enables the criminal element to take over in the first place. Or to put it another way, there is no black market before declaring a market to be black, i.e. to regulate. We saw this with the prohibition, the gangs did not take over alcohol until alcohol was regulated. Or with the war on drugs, the gangs did not come until the US regulated drugs. The simple fact is, that when people are desperate, and legal channels are taken away from them, they go to criminals instead.

Freja Corbinne

You clearly don't understand the word "regulation"

Ben Chan

Re: Head-6, based on what we've seen so far, I think this show has done an expert job keeping it ambiguous whether 6 is a Cylon in his head, or if she's a delusion. I don't believe she's ever said anything Gaius doesn't know or suspect on a subconscious level. And she always plays coy when asked about something he couldn't possibly know.

Troy Convers

More to the point, how did Gaius survive the blast? Is everyone seeing 'Head Gaius'?

Troy Convers

You're forgetting (and something that isn't touched on in the ep) is that there's a scarcity problem. Why on earth Roslyn didn't go to Prometheus on day one and take it over as to control the supply chain is beyond me.

Nolan

Welcome to BSG's flashback phase. SO many episodes in S2 have some element of flashback to them. It's kinda hilarious how often they go to that well in such a short period. But yes, RDM hates this episode. But the track "Black Market" on the OST is a bit of a banger.

Nolan

Caprica, not New Caprica.

gobmob2000

By "regulation" I understand to mean a legal restriction in economic activity, a pretty standard definition and my comment still applies to it.

gobmob2000

Because that would create a even greater scarcity problem, planned economics does not work, Roslyn would find herself unable to distribute the supplies effectively.

While I think it is a good episode, gangster guy is depicted as way too powerful: The army is the most powerful and organized group in the fleet, to kill Fisk in his own office, he would need to do more than just bribe a few security officers. he would need to be absolutely sure that whoever was Fisk's second in commend, wouldn't lunch a retaliatory marine strike that a group of thugs wouldn't be able to handle. I don't buy that he was able to secure this kind of influence in the Pegasus. Also, in a population as small as the fleet, there probably aren't that many children, and there is no way former minister of education Roslyn, didn't make it a priority to census them and make sure all of them are in a proper school environment. yet, this episode expect us to believe that dozens of children "fell off the grid" without any kind of alarm bells going on. again, I just don't buy it.

Derek Orr

meh, its the Navy, not the army. They are not exactly drowning in tons of troops. They have some Marines, and Pegasus has a smaller crew size than Galactica.

Derek Orr

Lots of people survive blasts like that. It was maybe a stretch he was more or less uninjured and able to walk to the Raptor.

Derek Orr

Ya I dont get the hate either. It addresses some relevant issues that would be outright weird to ignore. Lee's PTSD and the scarcity of resources/products in the fleet

John

Fixed. Thank you.

tal goren

The Pegasus had enough troops to raid their entire civilian fleet, so I think they could have manage taking over one small ship. gangster guy entire strategy seemed to be to act like he own the fleet and hope everyone believe him, which is a really stupid thing to do with people who were not only better armed then him, but also his main suppliers.

Jonathan

Yeah I don't hate it. The premise that a high-ranking officer could outright get murdered was a good one. The idea Lee would get drafted as a detective was a bit of a stretch, but it managed to effectively show that his idealism has been severely dented (possibly broken?) by the last couple of episodes.

Jonathan

Weird thing to praise, but they really do nail garrotting in this episode. The way Fisk's body looks, the way Lee looks while he's being strangled is almost painful to watch. Some amazing acting and effects work.

Jonathan

I wouldn't say it's "dozens" of kids, looks like a handful. And everything has been incredibly chaotic. Roslin HAS taken a census of everybody, but conditions on all the ships are grim, even if there is anybody going around checking on welfare it'd be pretty easy to falsify reports or just pretend things aren't as bad when they're around.

Ashtara Levin

BTW, if no one has mentioned it - there is a youtube reaction channel called "Warp Reactor" (He does Sci-Fi reactions like Star Trek and The Expanse..)

tal goren

there were at least 5 kids in that cage and I didn't get the impression that was the first group they ever sold. so dozens does seem like a good estimate. as for falsifying reports, kids are harder to misplace then medicine. the teachers would notice the kids are missing even if the reports say they are fine. and you can't bribe EVERY teacher.

Slothlyke

Some regulations are needed. - health, safety, protections from market-fuckery like scalpers, protection of human and worker rights otherwise it doesn't matter whether there is a black market, the normal market would basically be one Drug problems are usually easily solved by a government, insure housing (housing first) and a living worthy live, decimalize drugs, put in help programs. The US simply doesn't really want that solved because it would involve socialism and actually help Americans and not businesses. Fighting gangs and "illegal" immigrant shifts the policies towards other issues, instead of actually caring for the citizens. That way you are happy, and the rich can further exploit you. win win Planned economics works, the US army is a planned economy..... The goal of the planning should be the needs and not like in Soviet Union the GDP and the riches for ruling class. It was basically capitalist planned economy, while US Army planned economy has the distribution of supplies and as goal....
