You think one day I'd slow down just a *pinch* to make sure I've put the right links in places *face palm* - Kat

Time Lord

To the 11 of you who got a sneak peak at Friday's Lower Decks reaction... You're welcome but also keep that link to yourself please 🤣- Kat

Happens to the best of us Kat lol

Oooh, that was a nasty shock, I almost watched some LD. 😂

Geraint Harrison

Price Smashers, definitely not a real shop lol, Paula might be thinking of CeX, their shop fronts and interior have the red thing going on.

Geraint Harrison

They were in a department store which I don't know if you have, maybe something like Macy's? they sell almost everything. From wikipedia "clothing, cosmetics, do it yourself, furniture, gardening, hardware, home appliances, houseware, paint, sporting goods, toiletries, and toys."

Graem Peters

The 3 episodes aired over the Easter weekend. I watched it thinking it was the last red dwarf they would ever make.

Troy Convers

I've enjoyed rewatching it way more than I thought I would, even if only because it feels like a time capsule for 2009 England. In case you don't know, Blade Runner and the first two Alien films were direct inspirations for Grant & Naylor to create RD, so it feels like it's come full circle. You've really missed out by watching it as it was intended (a one piece TV film), because the story does progress linearly and everything in BTE is explained. You also have to remember that it wasn't clear if any more RD would be made; despite critics hating it, BTE was successful enough to justify UKTV to commission an actual Series X. And no, Dave the TV channel wasn't named after Lister, as the channel it was rebranded in 2007 and the reason was stated.

Troy Convers

No one knew if more would be made until the ratings and feedback told UKTV there was still legs on the Dwarf.

Troy Convers

Might have been modelled after Dixons.

Troy Convers

Australian sci-fi show? Ahem, Farscape....

Tom Mclean

I still feel it was a mistake to have this in 3 parts, I remember it being better to watch as like a tv movie after it aired for the first time. I think the network channel Dave who made this wanted to test it to see if red dwarf still had a large audience out there because it had been nearly ten years since series 8.

Raven Stromdans

I'm glad you two enjoyed this part of the series more than the previous one, but I kind of expected this would probably be the case, because it really doesn't open up until this point to me either. I think my favorite parts of this segment of the miniseries was Lister's conversation with the kids, Rimmer's reaction to "killing a hologram is perfectly fine"...and I notice that I don't think either of you picked up on Kryten's reaction in the sci-fi shop when the subject of Kochanski's death came up. SO telegraphed. Keep Calm and Smeg On, Gallifrey Pals! Me and Mr. Flibble will be here questioning whether our reality is valid until the next episode!

Troy Convers

Another aside - speaking of Law & Order, Jamie (Apollo) Bamber was in Law & Order: UK, after BSG ended.

Glad you're enjoying the Blade Runner stuff. The whole "Blade Runner inspired your creation" is almost certainly a retcon, neither Doug nor Rob ever mentioned it as an influence once before this story, I think it was just Doug wanting to make the episode have a distinct visual style. But I suppose that's for the next video anyway. And yeah, this one is such a leap up in quality. The first episode is such a joyless slog, without the laugh track or much music it really shows up how desolate and grim being on Red Dwarf must be, in a way that does nothing for the comedy. Curious to see how you get on with part 3, I can't imagine the Corrie stuff properly translating to anyone who's never seen the show.

Chris Fone

I wonder could Paula be thinking of Poundstretcher? We do have those shops, over here. Admittedly I can't remember the last time I saw one but the company is still going.

The weekend Back to Earth aired was unbelievable. I grew up on Red Dwarf. My earliest memory is being a few weeks from turning five and seeing Tikka to Ride. I remember watching Back in the Red as it went out in my mum's bedroom (she had the main TV downstairs) and shouting down "It's starting! It's starting!" To then go ten years without new Red Dwarf was heartbreaking to a young lad. The DVDs kept the show alive somewhat as they had some great bonus features (the documentaries, Identity Within and Bodysnatcher). The promise of more in the shape of a movie never came to fruition, and then to hear Series IX was declined by the BBC really felt like the show would never come back. I'd pretty much lost hope by 2006/7. It was in early 08 that some hints started to come out that talks were ongoing about something. Finally getting new Red Dwarf after so long is indescribable. Not only that but three episodes in three days. Surreal. Then it got record ratings at the time for a cable show and it really felt like it was inevitable the show would be back for more. The new "Dave" era of the show has been so great. Series X, XI, XII and the TV movie are all classics. It is easy to overlook Back to Earth acting as the backdoor pilot. But I still cherish it for what it is. By the way, it was brought back by a TV channel that is literally called Dave. They renamed the channel to Dave Lister for the weekend Back to Earth aired.

Hell3Quin

Australia has a lot of good kids sci-fi through the 80's plus. oo oo Round The Twist!

Hell3Quin

Or Round The Twist?

Hell3Quin

Jaime is in Law and Order UK with someone else you might recognise from Doctor Who (very recent)

I can well understand how jarring BTE must be when you have absolutely no idea what to expect. I've been trying to remember what it was like to watch it when it first aired, and I honestly have no recollection. The only thing I remember clearly is that I correctly guessed a plot point in the third episode, and confused all of my friends who did NOT watch Red Dwarf when I posted about it on Facebook. I do think we had some vague idea of what to expect, if not the exact plot. We'd seen some PR materials, and there were rumors about some of the stuff that happens in the third episode, though no exact details. That said, a lot of people were annoyed with the ending of series VIII, and I sort of like the idea of just handwaving the entire thing. Was it executed well? Perhaps not. Well, definitely not, but I enjoy the end result regardless. Here's where I admit that this episode has some of my favorite Red Dwarf moments: The conversation with the kids on the bus (though I 100% agree it makes no sense, but I appreciate the sentiment and how it is said), Rimmer killing Katerina (I will often point to this moment to explain parts of his character, and dammit, I love him so much in that moment, murderous asshat that he is) , and Rimmer just _casually reading a collection of carpet samples_. Because that's what he's doing. The absolutely ridiculous man. I 100% agree that this is a meta-commentary, and I think it has moments of absolute brilliance. That said, without the elation of having waited years for more content, I more easily see the flaws. The pacing is off, especially when viewed as a three-parter, the characterization can come off weird in some cases - I can see why (for spoilery reasons), but it could have been easily fixed. As with some of series VII and all of series VIII, BTE does suffer from being a much better collection of ideas than a finished product. I can't help it though; I adore it. Super excited to see what you make of part 3!

pbaker

Yes it was surreal. I thought Red Dwarf was over and will never forget at the end of 2008 Robert Llewelyn on his you tube channel leaning towards the camera and saying ‘more Red Dwarf’. I think ‘Headfuck Monday’ was somewhere in Feb 2009 when the first pictures of Carbug were released. I watched part one at my parent’s house where I had lapped up the original series, part two in my Watford flat and part three after the band I was in did a radio session. What a time to be alive. I re-joined the fan club and arranged to go to the convention immediately.

Okay, I decided to go back into my Livejournal (don't judge me), and see what I had to say about BTE back when it first aired. And I found some interesting tidbits! Firstly, from March 2009: "For those who don't know yet, the plot of the new episodes involves the crew arriving in OUR DIMENSION. This hasn't been stated yet, but it's pretty obvious from what's being hinted at. This teaser cements it. Some people hate this meta-idea, but personally, I love it to BITS." I'd forgotten about that, but apparently we did know something...! I also found a link to the following quotation from fan site Ganymede and Titan: "No official quotations from anyone involved in the show (save for Craig describing it as “a real mind melter”), so this could be guesswork/speculation/made up, but it appears that we’re looking at a parallel universe (“dimension-jumping leviathan”, anyone?) in which Red Dwarf is a TV show. We’re through the looking-glass here, people."

Chris Devlin

Much better than the first part and has a couple of good moments. The conversation with the kids is probably the best part of it. I can definitely appreciate it a lot more than I did at the time. When it first aired I wasn't as familiar with Blade Runner as I am now and the "meta" side of it just wasn't what I was looking for. It just felt really disappointing to have waited that long for the show to return, only to get this bizarre, weirdly edited and put together "thing". Having the series that followed definitely helps mitigate that a little though and I can actually appraise it for what it was trying to do. Looking forward to seeing if the last episode holds up at all. Oh and the store they were in looked like a department store chain called John Lewis, with some "Price Smashers" billboards placed around to hide that fact. But the price labels and store signs look about right.

This is my favourite part of Back to Earth, but seeing the broadcast version again really makes me appreciate the Director's Cut even more! You probably already know this, but Craig Charles was a regular on Coronation Street for 10 years while also doing Red Dwarf (I still watched it back then and I really liked his character in Corrie). Because the budget was so tiny, they were looking for money-saving measures and a visit to the Cobbles of Coronation Street was arranged. Once upon a time it would have been absolutely impossible for that to happen. Red Dwarf is a BBC property, while Coronation Street is an ITV property. ITV at the time also had a stake in UKTV (majority-owned by the BBC), who are the owners of Dave, the channel that aired Back to Earth... so that probably helped a bit, plus I'd imagine it was part of the deal for Craig being released to do Red Dwarf - free publicity for Coronation Street! They rebranded the Dave channel to Dave Lister for the few weeks preceding Back to Earth's airing. The store in London they filmed this in was John Lewis, if that helps.

Those 3 days were.. interesting. Being 14 years old at the time, I was just psyched that the show I'd gotten into a few years before was coming back! I think it's agreed that Episode 1 was definitely the weakest, even back then people didn't like it much😄Then it gradually got better from there. Throughout they never hold back on the Blade Runner references lol

"Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries" is an ADORABLE police procedural set in the 1920s Melbourne, Australia. You two would LOVE IT. It's not too dark, not too light, has a couple romantic interest storylines, it's good fun.

Lizbeth Marcs

Is Farscape streaming somewhere? That's an Australian production.
