With its placement in the season, and lacking huge plot advancements, I always forget how amazingly well-done every facet of this episode is. (except maybe the flashback format.) Such a great exploration of Kara, Kat and the fighter pilots' perspective.

As soon as Starbuck raised that bottle, I started tearing up, because I knew what came next. There was a recording of the writers' break session for this episode that was released in the podcast commentary feed. I held on to that for years, until an iTunes update decided to delete it because it was marked as played. Not sure if it's still available anywhere.

My favourite single ep of S2. We saw how broken Lee was last week, now the focus is on Starbuck, playing to her worst behaviours while still being functional as an ace pilot. Nice that Kat is rising in stature, and that we're getting some expansion of what the Raiders are as a species. I really wish that Scar, the Red Baron of the Raiders, had stuck around as a nemesis to Starbuck, who's descent into chaos is partly her Ahab-like obsession with Scar, who kinda mirrors her, in the sense that he's been hurt and just wants to hurt someone back. Yes, the flashback idea is overused and totally not needed in this ep, but we do get Bear Creary's lovely version of Cavatina, so ironic given it's most famous use.

Kind of heart-wrenching how Lee and Starbuck both try to help each other despite their own episodes showing how badly broken they are inside. And Kat is basically Starbuck without main character goggles. Same traits, similar personality. But when she hauls off and punches her arrogant, drunken superior we end up sympathising more with Starbuck because of how much of her backstory we've seen. BSG does such a good job of being one huge moral grey area. With the exception of Helo. He's just pure good.

I know I'm in the minority here but I'm not a fan of this episode. It's really well written and well acted, but I was never a fan of Kat and Starbucks dynamic and a whole episode of it just does nothing for me. Just two characters being obnoxious to each other for 40 minutes. Ugh. But I get why other people really like it. Not being a big fan of Kat as a character doesn't help. I just never really warmed to her.

You're right on the mark about Kat. I never liked her and she's always come across as dislikeable. In this episode I felt even when she was right, she was saying it in the absolutely worst way possible just to be an ass. Even though I recognize the similarities, I still can't like her. The actress does one HELL of a good job playing her, though.

We? I thought that Starbuck was an ass and I'm firmly on Kat's side; she's evolved, whereas Thrace has devolved. People are blinded by their love of Starbuck, a character that, if the Colonies existed, would have been kicked out of the service long ago. And both Adamas enabling her worst behaviours is pretty shitty, wartime or not.

Nolan

I always found this episode tedious. "Starbuck, wake UP! It's a machine, it's not gonna break!" The constant flashforward and flashbacks does nothing but muddle the plot and pad out the runtime as we keep seeing scenes we've already seen. I think this is a bad attempt to re-do the much better and well recieved "Act of Contrition" in Season 1 which was also very flashback heavy, but better used as an expression of the character's thoughts. I can't tell the point of the flashbacks here. And especially after 2 other flashback episodes in a row, this one hurts more. I do like how it shows the growth in our tertiary characters, and keeps some backgound plots going. Also, not sure where in the series you are recording, but don't forget the webisodes between Seasons 2 & 3.

I thought the little shot of Adama and Tigh at the 'celebration' was a great inclusion. Adama looks genuinely happy at the victory and a bit amused at the whole Starbuck/Kat rivalry. As much as he tries, he's detached enough/wrapped up in his own problems enough that he doesn't realise how unhappy Starbuck is. Tigh meanwhile is enjoying the hell out of watching Starbuck get humiliated. Dude hates her.

Pegasus has a "viper factory", I'd assume one of the other ships can refine metal if the fleet picked up an entire mining operation. Let's be honest it's a pretty weak handwave so we can keep watching Vipers blow up without the mysteriously-replenishing-shuttlecraft argument of Voyager.

While watching, I was actually thinking "If Red Dwarf was part of the fleet, they would have just scoop up that entire asteroid and move on"

I definitely forgot most of those pilots! But Starbuck's tribute at the end still made me tear up - this show knows how to remind us that every life is valuable. (also love that Adama and Tigh were there in the crew quarters for that scene) Secondary love goes to seeing Helo as part of the team and not just part of the Sharon story - he was so separate for so long, even when he came back, because he was still just part of that other story.

You're not exactly wrong, but Tigh just respected the hell out of Starbucks toasting the pilots they have lost to get here after eating a whole humble pie.
