I think Get Bladdered works, but will probably take longer to make sense.

Lemmy's Mole

Time Team started in 1994, Sunday night staple for most of the UK.. Very much loved, big live digs for special occasions..new stuff is now YouTube only I believe.... BA seasons 2,3 & 4 are generally preferred by fans..myself included, except for Ep 4 of series 1, in my top 5 fav episodes.

I think the time taken to establish the alternate history slows down episode one a bit. It's necessary though, because in reality Brian Blessed's character was last seen as a child in the tower of London and is presumed to have died there with his older brother. Without it a large chunk of the audience would be confused. Later episodes I think there's more room to be funny and the pacing is much better.

I'm impressed you caught the Baldrick Tme Team connection, but Percy (Tim McInnerny) was also in Doctor Who.

Mark Ten

Did you know that Rowan Atkinson has a genius level IQ? There is a story that it was measured at 178, higher than Einstein's... At that level the test numbers are actually meaningless, but he is still a genus kind of genius.

Jonathan

I love that they never elaborate on what the eunuchs do. They're just there.

Troy Convers

Didn't know it was still going. Yes it was cult viewing on C4.

Now I've watched this episode for the first time in years I'm surprised that the pacing is similar to S2, even if the quick zingers are fewer. Anyone spot Angus Dayton as one of the jumping Jews (two ex HIGNFY presenters in S1!) and Alex Norton (McAngus) ironically stars in Braveheart!

Chris Fone

Time Team was actually revived, a few years ago...on Patreon! The scanning technique you remembered was called Geophysics. It was a particular favourite of mine, back in the 90's and I was even a member of the Time Team club, for a while. Needless to say Tony Robinson became the presenter of that show because he became so famous for playing Baldrick in this one.

Robert Carson

Eunuch, Morris Dancers, and bearded ladies? Rimmer's idea of a great time.

Yes, the main thing that sets the different series apart is that they simply get better at it as time goes on. The pacing gets snappier, the writing gets tighter, the characters more finely honed. In addition, they also get more and more reasonably well-known material to riff on. S1 is mostly subversions of what is only vaguely taught and known, and the odd history-as-told-by-Shakespear here and there, whereas S2 can take on all of the Elizabethan age and its many surviving references and English greatness (the queen's various foibles, the explorers of the era, numerous religious conflicts) and S3 gets to have fun with the regency era (yes, there will be some Austen in there). Being able to more easily play on what the audience is expected to know and be familiar with opens up a lot more avenues of subversion and comedy. They also learn to loosen up a bit with the historicity of the show, being more willing to mix in comments on modern or at least contemporary issues. This can be a bit hit and miss, though, depending on how familiar you are with Britain in the '80s.

My reaction to Paula knowing about Time Team was exactly as she said. 😮 and then 😀

It’s funny that you say that this episode is better than the first episode, because that had to set up the characters and plot, because there was an unaired pilot (it eventually aired a couple years ago) that was basically this episode except it was set in a later vaguely Elizabethan period, and had some notable cast differences (a different King, Harry, and most jarringly a different Baldrick). There’s a great documentary called “Blackadder Rides Again” made in 2008 that’s worth watching when you finish the whole saga, which has contributions from the entire cast and crew.

The change between Series 1 and everything that comes after is that the writing partnership changed. In Series 1, it's Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson as the writing pair. Starting with Series 2, and including the Christmas special, the Red Nose special, and the movie, it's Richard Curtis and Ben Elton. The thing is, Atkinson and Curtis were long-timer co-writers by this point (and in fact were co-writers on Mr. Bean which came after Blackadder). But for some reason, I don't think their partnership served Blackadder that well. Ben Elton was just a better fit for the material, I think. A slightly interesting note: Robert Llewellyn mentions in his book that Red Dwarf was filming at the same time as the later Blackadder series and specials, so they'd see the Blackadder cast around Shepperton Studios during lunches and breaks. A lot of the Britcoms that filmed in the mid- and late 80s and 90s all have the same sensibility and all came from the same creative pool where writers were taking some big chances to break out of the "living room" comedies. Llewellyn's behind-the-scenes book is actually really interesting on that front because he really captures the time and place.

Tom

Was the book called The Man in the Rubber Mask? I had that book.

Hell3Quin

Yeh I got it from the library.

There was a time where my sunday midday was an hour of Scrapheap Challenge (Junkyard Wrs in the US) hosted by Robert Llewellyn and an hour of Time Team. Aaah happy days. Channel 4 eventually dropped Time Team after messing with the format (identical story with Scrapheap Challenge) but is now making new shows on youtube & I think passed the 10k patreon backers mark. It really is a good show to chill out to.

Hell3Quin

He does look very different though.

My Sunday nights (courtesy of my local PBS station) was Blackadder, Red Dwarf, Waiting for God, and 'Allo 'Allo (eventually replaced with the Piglet Files). I basically went 5 years across two states with that same Sunday night line-up thanks to that PBS station. I was a newspaper reporter at the time, so this was my chill-out time after a stressful week.
