I believe in you, even though you haven't watched ____ or ____ and also might be killer robots or something.

Mike Connaghan

Also I don't have time to watch everything you have made time to watch. Not with the robot uprising to plan and all. I've said too much. [MEMORY DELETED]

Tippis

Speaking of thumbnails, Paula's face at just over 22:ish minutes must have been a candidate. 😂

And now to Season 4, where my previous two watches (original aired and DVD box set late '09/early '10) sputtered and almost ground to a screeching halt. This time? Well without spoiling anything, the first episode and the laying out of new arcs was never the problem. And there are arcs aplenty. It's identity crisis day on Chez Galactica! Rugs are being pulled out everywhere! Somehow, Starbuck is back! Tigh is still hearing Cylon FM! Gaius is going full Holy Rollers! Wooooo! But seriously, S4 has taken a left turn and is barrelling full pelt towards Sector 001. Or is it? Is Starbuck or Roslyn right about the true path to Earth, or will Gaius see something through the mountains of flesh he's wading through, given that he's beginning to believe he might be The Messiah. Or is he just a naughty boy? Well who's right? Who's wrong? Who's keeping score? Who's got the plan? Ack, ack!

Derek Orr

I mean if you look at it from the lens of you just come back from discovering earth and everyone is all nuts and weird and thinks you have been dead for 3 months and your a cylon….AND your Starbuck…ya what she is doing is pretty fair and understandable

Troy Convers

So if he's a Cylon, and he's a Cylon, and she's a Cylon, then who am I? And who's eating this sandwich?

Derek Orr

They attacked that lady who was with Baltar because they are angry and raging at Baltar over his son being killed …and she is one of the ring leaders of the “love Baltar cult”….she is not just an innocent witness who happened to be in the room, she is on team Baltar and they are out to murder Baltar and everything about him

Locoturbo

Well. That was a take. Regarding DS9 and TNG... I mean, how many times did "that topic" come up on TNG? You have Tasha's traumatic backstory (before Ron Moore was involved in ST), how many times was Troi violated, including the episode Violations (Moore not involved), The Child (Moore not involved and not on the show yet), the stupid ghost candle episode which is the most notable one I can think of for McFadden (Moore also not involved.) And for DS9 a notable episode (Duet) where I recall Kira screaming about the issue - Moore also not involved. So I really don't find it a fair criticism of Ron Moore, and it's weird to stigmatize DS9 for that when TNG had a lot of it, even on the Federation flagship.

Nolan

Tbh, the best part of the episode is the teaser. Great action scene' really nice visuals. The rest of the episode is resetting up the board. Baltar's cult is... well interesting to wonder where it came from. Because it kinda is a natural extension of Giaus' story, but was it also informed by the actual cult growing in hollywood at the time? As for the power dynamics and sex of it all... yep, you can tell this is a pre-MeToo show, where, let's be honest, a lot of males had no conceptualization of these things - nor the trauma they caused, or they did know and were awful users of people. I feel like it was rarer to have a male with the perspective to see the flip side of these situations and wholly understand them. And I feel like that's what RDM is doing, being fascinated with those dynamics and exploring what they are like and asking what leads to them, only for MeToo to come along a decade later and go: "This is how, and it sucks." I certainly don't think every guy in a power dynamic is aware of it and consciously using it. Those without the power can not recognize that's what's going on, but those with it are also capable of being blind to it. As with most things, it's frakking murky. As for Baltar, he is definitely murky. On the one hand, it's GAIUS. Have we ever seen him turn down sex when offered to him? Obviously on some level he must know about power dynamic relationships, as he's often used his celebrity status to get intimate. But is he fully AWARE of the full ramifications of this behaviour? Has he ever cared to think about it before? I don't think Gaius here is depicted doing this to be evil. I think it's to depict what a dumbass he is. He falls back into his old habits, and yet, he then shows some growth. He ends up in this cult, scoffs at the looneys, gets offered and takes sex, then heads out to leave... then he stays. And apparently shows genuine concern for someone not himself. And he remains after that. Perhaps he cares more than he thinks, for once? I dunno. Mysteries abound this season, that's for sure... but uhh, ya probably gonna be frusterated and uncomfortable some more. (Also, the guy with the razor to Bsltar's neck was Connor, who we saw on New Caprica and was part of The Circle that executed collaborators after the Exodus - as was Seelix by the way... and Tigh, Tyrol and Anders)

Troy Convers

I agree. It's one thing criticising the overuse of SA in storytelling (which is fair), but going after RDM for something he didn't do is BAD FAITH criticism. Paula just doesn't like DS9 'because Ferengi' and now she's kneejerk crapping on it. Bad form.

Firefly24601

Who says she doesn't like Ferengi?

Nolan

I may not always agree, but love the reactions! And the genuineness.

Troy Convers

She hates the episode with cross dressing Quark and made remarks that she had issues with the Ferengi race when she watched DS9. That's from a reaction from this year.

Locoturbo

I'm just not agreeing with the vibe they're projecting onto this. Baltar just fled for his life (by the way in a deleted scene he was also almost killed before he reached the cult/sanctuary) and now he's in a situation he does NOT want to be in. He asks how he can leave, they explain why he can't. He makes no moves on any woman there - they make moves on him. So his crime is ... not being able to say no to a beautiful woman (who is certainly of age to consent btw) who adores and worships him and is throwing herself at him. I mean, if that's his crime, fair enough? But is he really supposed to potentially risk his only sanctuary and consequently his life by saying "you know what, no, I won't do that based on principle, it's wrong! But by all means please continue to endanger all of your lives to protect me." I'm trying to be fair about the GG's interpretation and understand the perspective, but I just can't get on board with it.

Mark Chrisco

Without spoilers, what is the name of the DS9 episode that causes such a reaction. I don't recall an episode involving that subject.

Nolan

Profit and Lace. Which was generally considered a really poor episode.

Jonathan

Interesting perspective on the vibes this episode. I always got that it was creepy for Gaius to accept sex based on his cult of personality, but I never saw a huge power dynamic. His cult members obviously see him as a godly person, maybe even a prophet, but he's never actually shown instructing them to do anything. If anything he's led around by them, and totally reliant on them for food, shelter and protection. He's certainly less capable physically than the woman who saves him from being murdered. Different perspectives I guess. Plus I thought the plotline with the boy was relatively well-done. The way it was shot kept it ambiguous at first whether he was REALLY praying or if he knew people could hear him. But when Head Six put him in a situation where he had to choose, he genuinely seemed willing to give up his life.

Jonathan

What's interesting is that "President" Baltar was regularly shown in bed with various younger 'interns', and presumably there was even more of a power dynamic there than there is here. But I don't remember it being mentioned? Maybe less obvious because of the lack of a religious angle, or maybe it was specifically how young the woman looked here that made it creepier?

John

Maybe the show has burned the pals once too often, but I get the feeling they're just looking for something to dislike now. Giaus has been a weak willed womanizer from day one. Of course vulnerabile women are going to play into his own weaknesses. Why did they have to choke out the girl with Gaius? Probably to keep her from screaming. Kara not acting like herself? After "returning from the dead" this is surprising? Cylon or not, is that so surprising? It's like you have an idea how you want or expect the story to go and you're upset it's not going that way. Are you even enjoying the show anymore?

Firefly24601

I don't think the Ferengi are why Paula doesn't care to watch DS9 again. I think they may be ONE of the things she doesn't like IN Deep Space 9. (Good Lord, are we STILL talking about them not reacting to DS9?)

Anthony MacEwan

I'm glad we're here! I don't think I've seen season 4 since it first aired. Anytime I've attempted a rewatch I usually don't make it past season 3.

Troy Convers

I honestly don't think that they are.

Mark Chrisco

I vaguely remember now. IIRC my response was that the Ferengi were an alien species and should not be judged by human standards, but tolerated if not accepted as being no better than a human society. That said, judging an entire series on one subpar episode is a bit unsettling.

Karl Ward

Even when I watched this on it's first run, I really couldn't be bothered with the whole Baltar Messiah/cult thing. Don't forget the whole Waco cult seemed quite recent (15 years before). I honestly think/hope that the episode, had it been shot now, would have been quite different. I mean Gaiuss Baltar is whisked away to be introduced to his own cult, and literally 5 minutes after meeting someone who looks about 15 is in bed with her. Nah, honestly it would have been more interesting for Baltar to have found himself in a "Misery" scenario (if you haven't seen the film watch it now) and be kept prisoner by his "biggest" fan!!

Troy Convers

A great idea, but his status as an 'influencer' does go somewhere in the series, so this arc is useful.
