I believe all the uncomfortable sex on this show is absolutely intentionally weird to watch.

there was a great shot of Orion as seen from earth when Starbuck encountered the cyclon ship

So, Tyrol actually had dialogue written for that scene with him and Gaius in his quarters. It was the ACTORS who came up with the idea to have Tyrol be silent. And boy does it work. Again, going back to my theory that Tyrol suspects he killed Cally, I think that's why he was curious enough about Baltar to go. He wanted absolution for what he thinks he did. But seeing Gaius the showman turned him away. "There are some sins your imaginary god can't forgive!" Tyrol throwing the atrocities of New Caprica at Gaius' feet, or him lasshing out after not finding the forgiveness he sought? Hence his breakdown after with the gun. He doesn't know what to do with his guilt. Then Gaius comes to him with genuineness, and Tyrol apparently finds in forgiving Gaius, the forgivness he himself was seeking. Lastly, Matthaias' death. First time I watched the show, she was one of the rare minor, minor characters I didn't recognize, so I was a bit confused about the send off for this 1 episode random. Oops, turns out she's been there since the start of S3.

Also, a few callbacks to Kara and Leoben's first episode, where SHE was torturing HIM. And he said: "Each of us plays a role. Each time, a different role. Maybe the last time, I was the interrogator and you were the prisoner. The players change, the story remains the same." Now Starbuck is back to being the interrogator. And something else I just noticed on this rewatch... she refers to her feeling about Earth as a "sound." Weird.

Borrowing another reactor's terminology, I would say this is definitely a "low-key banger." So much good writing and acting, addressing so many long-term points, all the character conflict and moving the plot forward so much even while literally going nowhere.

There are quite a few leaks of faith going on in S4 so far: Gaius seemingly taking a leap of religious faith on his destiny, our leap of faith that he's actually genuine about it, Kara's leap of faith that she can find Earth and the crew not taking that leap. And then there's the leap that the viewer is having to make that all of this vacillating will actually go somewhere soon. Having seen this whole arc, I'm convinced that they could have wrapped it up in fewer episodes. The storylines are fascinating, but boy is the show just plodding right now. Still, Aaron Douglas knocked it out of the park again while channelling some serious Private Pyle. And the only episode in the whole run without Daddy Adama in it, and one of only two without Mama Airlock.

David T

These slow inward-facing episodes focusing on psychology are a bit frustrating on first watch, but more revealing (new layers of information) upon rewatching. And they lead very soon into some of the best episodes of the series.

Bye bye boy bye. Did Paula make an unintentional Ariana Grande reference? This episode had a lot of great scenes in a lot of this season I don't remember.
