The pacing and energy on this episode and is like a whole different show from most of series 1. And Lord Flasheart looked great in that dress!

I normally skip Series 1 when I watch Blackadder because it is so different in style and tone from the rest of it. I'm still not a fan of the sniveling Edmund in it, but enjoyed it more this time than I remembered. Series 2-4 is nothing but gold and I hope we get "A Blackadder Christmas Carol" and "Blackadder Back & Forth" watchalongs for Christmas and New Years, respectively.

Random fact about another show: the way Blackadder said "Bob" in this episode is why the main character of ReBoot, the first full 30 minute CGI show, has that name. The creators of ReBoot just liked it that much.

Part of the reason he pronounces "Bob" in the way he does is because Rowan Atkinson has a slight stammer that causes him to struggle with Bs at the start of words, so he kinda leans into it, over-exaggerates it, which has the happy side-effect of being very funny!

Poor Baldrick - as the series continue Blackadder gets more suave and cunning while Baldrick gets ever more feral and bewildered :)

Consider the girls reaction to Lister's sloppiness I can't see them enjoying the Young Ones. It would be fun to watch.

Now, I have a new found respect for Series 1 on rewatch; it's genuinely funny, a bit quirky and a perfect way to lay the foundations for the Blackadder series. And as such, lessons were learned and we get the classic formula - and as such Series 2 is. A. BANGER!!!!! As in all of it; no excess fat, not a second wasted. Perfect script, perfect casting, perfect characterisation. And what an episode, an all time classic that plays on cross dressing antics and establishing this Edmund's demeanour, which is VASTLY different to his antecedent's. And that last five minutes - Gals, meet Lord Flashheart, a man that could give a certain Ace Rimmer a run for his money. What a way to end episode 1. Only five more bangers to go to series 3!

I always loved the idea of a crossover with Lord Flashheart and Ace Rimmer, but there would be some comedic gold with Dave Lister meeting Baldrick as two characters repeatedly referred to "almost human".

The name 'Bernard' appears in nearly everything Richard Curtis wrote, including other Blackadder serials, the movie 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' and other romcoms. The back story is that, when he was at Cambridge University, he and his friend Bernard Jenkin were in love with the same girl, Ann Strutt. She ended up marrying Jenkin, who would go on to become a rather pompous Tory MP. Curtis then spent much of his writing career getting his own back by naming various underwhelming characters 'Bernard.'
