Been a fan of you guys for a long time, since before you had your own channel amd Im finally in a position to offer my support financially... and given the state of the fandom currently (no spoilers!) Thought support and community would be good for everyone! Anyway, agree 100% about this episode and this is coming from someone who the Omega reveal was made for (he's my favourite villain ever)!

Its weird what RTD is doing, lets restart the series numbering so that you don't feel like you have to watch the past 60 years of the show to know what is happening, but then lets bring back lots of obscure references from 60s/70s that only real die hard fans will remember. You can do Daleks & Cybermen but even people that have never watched an episode before are likely to know who they are. People who have never watched Star Wars before aren't going to get confused by Jedi & Storm Troopers, Star Trek you don't need to explain the Vulcans & Klingons all these are main stays of popular culture. Think saw that Moffat didn't want to bring back the Rani as most people wouldn't know them best to use the Master.

Firefly24601

Definitely not my favorite episode. It's making more sense to me the more I re-watch it, but RTD definitely chose an overly convoluted way of getting there.

7th Doctor to the Rani: Before I thought you were a psychopath without murderous intent... I withdraw the qualification.

See I thought this was a decent episode, so if you're already this fed up with what's going on I can't wait for next week :)

I quite enjoyed this episode. Don't get me wrong, I entirely agree with all the points you made but in spite of that was content to be locked in for the ride with this weird mix of Brazil, Stepford Wives, The Truman Show etc. I bought in to the mysteries and was intrigued to see how all this got resolved. I didn't look at it as a standalone episode and perhaps because I couldn't see how RTD was going to stick the landing in one episode I was a little excited what the twist would be. It being a strong season aside from Robot Revolution (which wasn't terrible, it just fell short and was a bit irritating) gave me hope this could be a great finale. I had in mind Poppy being real, and being a baby from a space station in the future meant either she was crashing the Wish World party. Or Conrad knew more than he was letting on if she was part of his wish and was taking the two Rani's for a ride. I had a lot of fun thinking about it and speculating where it would go but I didn't lose sight of the fact this episode would stand or fall depending on the final episode. And I'll leave it there till next week. I have a lot more to say, but... spoilers.

I will add one thing, as I said in the discord I'm a little baffled who the flashbacks to classic who are for. Old fans know what the frigging Rani looked like, new fans won't know who TF it is. RTD has used flashbacks this way before to pull twists together. Dropping in the Face of Boe in the Master reveal in Utopia is probably the best example. But he didn't show a montage of Roger Delgado, the crispy and rotting Master, Anthony Ainley and Eric Roberts. He let the performance and minimal exposition give the context. Moffat even introduced Dorium and the Paternoster Gang the same way giving them context and a past with the Doctor we never got to see. RTD did it with the entire Time War until late in Tennant's first run. There was balance between old and new, the reveals worked for Classic and new viewers and it felt seamless and unobtrusive. A flashback hindering the Doctor's reaction, followed by an exposition dump of retconned or new information is none of those things and fails by every metric. The only place it sort of worked was perhaps the Well to remind people of the Midnight Entity if they didn't get it from the diamond planet, exotonic radiation and the name. That one can be given some latitude but the rest? I generously described it as an interesting stylistic choice early on, but it wore my charity thin. That isn't an excuse for something that isn't working for any quarter of your audience aside from a pointless memberberry to invoke nostalgia.

I was frankly relieved it was the Rani, i think the Master has been overused. He needs a break. But the Rani seemed too close to Missy here. Which is something she never was. She'd do weird stuff to manipulate the Doctor or anyone else in furtherance of her ends, but she was cold and calculating. Dancing while dropping a load of hints at a possible past romance isn't the Rani. Could have maybe worked if it was Romana gone bad but that's a stretch and a half. His reaction when she said she was the Rani I thought was good. Mrs Flood was good, I could buy her being the Rani pissed off with herself and pretending to care about Conrad, but that dancing scene broke my suspension of disbelief. But, kind of lazy he introduced the Rani in an almost identical manner to Missy, and echoing Susan Triad. It all seems very derivative. Even more than Chibnall's run. RTD seems to have run out of ideas. Maybe he should produce the show, steer the ship and let new blood write more of it.

I think the flashbacks are solely to make the Doctor who eastenders crossover Dimensions in Time canon as that is where one of the clips came from.

michael moslin

Somebody counted 16 flashbacks in the finale

tal goren

the dancing scene can kind of work if we assume that there never was a romance between them, and the Rani just stated an obvious falsehood in the hope that it would increase the Doctor's doubt.
