Yeah, a friend's older brother did the exact same thing, except it was his birthday party with family, rather than a date. He wanted them to remember him as he was at the party, instead of how he'd been on dr_gs... :(

Definitely one that i can't watch during my lunch break if I want to go back to work. Hopefully you had some Lower Decks to watch after this one

Brutal episode. Having watched several people's reactions to it, you can tell instantly who sees it coming with Dee and who doesn't. It's a testament to the writing that it's almost always people who've been through that exact scenario in their lives who get progressively more worried for Dee as her mood abruptly lifts, while others are happy to see her happy and get totally blindsided. You could genuinely use this episode as a teaching tool. The moment with Leoben and Starbuck is one of my favorite in the series. He's been one of the most unflappable characters, he's tortured Starbuck and been tortured BY her without losing his cool for a second. Seeing him speechless, backing away like he's scared to even look at her - effective and satisfying.

Troy Convers

Poor Dee was just ground down by four years of unrelenting grief. The signs were there throughout the series that her light was getting dimmer and yeah, as soon as you saw her mood change, you knew she had made up her mind about ending her life. As I've seen too often IRL, people can hide their pain all too well until it's too late.

Troy Convers

I've been waiting for you guys to get to this episode since the start. It's fucking brutal, but it also gives a ton of payoff and earned moments. Earth-1 being a former Cylon stronghold is a trip, 2000 year old Starbuck, is a mind fuck that's too much even for master manipulator Leoben, Tyrol as a geography teacher in days of yore that hanged with Tori and Anders showed how well, normal Cylon culture was (bloody gentrification) was just so tantalising that yeah, a few episodes of flashbacks showing what happened would have been cool beans. And poor poor Bill, father of Apollo, seems to be mirroring Zeus in that the pressure of putting the hopes and dreams of a whole civilisation on his back had finally broken him, but he is getting up for more, Jake LaMotta style. And Lee has helped to lighten the load; he's really stepping into the leader role that Roslyn has fully abdicated. I'm sure the leadership is a non-issue from now on.

Tippis

…and with that revelation out of the way, you are almost ready to watch Katee's interview with Ron Moore, posted a couple of months back. There is one more detail that they'll discuss that might be a bit spoiler:y, but it's definitely worth watching once all of this is over. That and her hilarious episodes with Tricia Helfer — but those can and should be watched immediately. 🤣

The showrunners felt that finding Earth ruined and uninhabitable had to have serious, lasting consequences. Dee had been such a bright light for pretty much the entire run of the show. And while I do think that a lot of that is just how Dee was, I also think it was sometimes a burden to need to be that positive light. And this was just too much. I'm not trying to justify what she did. I'm just saying - I get it. Everybody has their breaking point.

The Final Five were the friends we made a long the way.

Just a quick message for Paula: Thanks for solving a mystery that I hadn't really thought of in over 40 years. Back when I was in high school my concert choir sang Beautiful City and I was always confused because our sheet music said it was "from the musical Godspell." My parents had the cast album and it always I had seen the musical, so it always confused me. Thanks for clearing that up!

Nolan

Paula's reaction to Roslin giving up - understanding but not empathising because of the awful choices Roslin makes is interesting, BECAUSE those awful choices ARE the reason she's giving up. The whole idea for Roslin was to keep the human race going until they reunited with the 13th Tribe on Earth, and every morally ambiguous decision she made to get her people to that point would have been worth it because she got her people there, there'd be other humans and the human race wouldn't have to be so pragmatic because it wasn't about to end. She didn't want to ban abortion, but she figured, well, as long as we keep enough population going until we get to Earth, it's fine, and once we're there, it can come back. Having a tight grip on the courts, stealing an election, those are bad, but it's just once I get these people to Earth, then I'm done. She hadn't even thought about the long-term ramifications of emerging class systems, or inherited jobs or long-term work conditions because she probably thought they wouldn't have to be in the Fleet for generations. Now they find Earth and her end goal that absolves her of every questionable decision is a cinder, and all that pragmatism and moral flexibility is staring her in the face, and it isn't gonna be solved.

Nolan

And yes, they did expect to find a planet full of humans - the Thirteenth Tribe of Kobol. That was the one hope clung onto through the whole show. Oops, all Cylons.

John

If you watch Dee on the way back from Earth on the raptor, you can see the moment she decided to shove off. She was on the verge of a breakdown, and suddenly a wave of calm came over her and the rest of her time she spent enjoying a few final moments before checking out. Like Kat, when I first watched this episode, I was immediately on edge and saw it coming. I just didn't want to admit it was what I was thinking until it was too late.

John

They can't all be Cylons or you wouldn't be able to tell a Cylon from a Human and they've shown they can do that.

JXTN

Dee :( Btw, don't know if it's too late, but two things! 1. The next episode (A Disquiet Follows My Soul) has an extended version! I can't remember what it changes, I don't know if you want to react to that. [Nevermind, just saw your comment on this. :) ] 2. These is a short canon plot-related web-series, I think supposed to be seen after this episode (the one you watched in this video), called The Face of the Enemy. 10 episodes, about 5 minutes each.

Karl Ward

i've seen too many people go the way of Dee, one quite recently. The only way I could process some of that was to write a poem. My gift to you all. I called it "The Day After" The day after there's a vacancy, In the space where you used to be, So much life yet such fragility, A maelstrom of such tranquility, I miss the you you used to be, I miss the you you should have been, Infinite potential unspent and unused, How does it begin to find another you, The answer my friend is it cannot begin, There is always a gap that cannot be filled, An unfinished melody without a conclusion, A part of the world that's full of confusion, The die is cast and life goes on, Your song was sung and now is gone, If only you knew how much you mean, If only you knew how you shattered the dream, There's a you shaped hole in the world today, Your memories may go and fade away, But the ripples you made will last until, The last eyes that saw you will also be still.

tal goren

is it just me or when Adama said "they were not super men" the gap between the words was just a little too long? like the actor had to remind himself that 'superman' was not a cultural reference the colonials would recognize

Derek Orr

Yet they really did not act like they where expecting to find inhabitants of any kind when they got there. Not a single scan or attempt to send a message or see what kind technology people have etc.

Derek Orr

A bit spoilery? Jesus it’s extremely spoilery

Troy Convers

They'd have a lot in common with Kryptonians, what with with destroyed home worlds and all.

Nolan

I remember in the commentary for "The Captain's Hand" RDM was talking about the writer's room going back and forth over Roslin using the expression "pound of Flesh" because it came from Shakespeare, ultimately deciding not to get too mired in it, that there's no reason a seperate culture wouldn't also come up with it. Which also explains how Adama has the same drinking glasses as my grandmother. 🤣

Troy Convers

They don't have scanner technology.
