I've been waiting for this one for months. The gutpunch of the reference to the original TNG episode _named_ Lower Decks made me cry almost instantly when I watched this for the first time, and I've been watching and rewatching your reactions to that episode for a while now in anticipation. It's certainly my favorite twist of this entire series. The original TNG episode was spectacularly good and this just fully honors that.

Tom Paris has appeared in S2.E3 "We'll always have Tom Paris". The same person I just don't see it! There's been lots of comments in the past about they couldn't use Nick in voyager due to rights over character, but apparently not true, they thought that Nick just wasn't a redeemable character but they wanted someone like him.

Captain Chris Dorn

Now you know why Mariner didn't wanted to be promoted.

Robert Ulus

I loved this episode! Mariner's issues felt, as you said, very real. And it's a problem she's had since season 1, but it seems like it really got exacerbated since the promotion. I don't know how deep into DS9 y'all got, but the Dominion War was really played like a Vietnam allegory, so it makes total sense that Mariner would have some PTSD from that time, too.

The funny thing is Robert Duncan McNeill actually agrees with that take. It was either the "Ready Room" or on the DVD commentaries where Mike McMahan said they approached McNeill when they were breaking the season to ask 1) If he minded if Nick Locarno would be this season's "big bad" and 2) If he'd be willing to voice the return of Nick. McNeill was all over that action because he always felt that Tom Paris and Nick Locarno, while having similar back stories, were very different. Tom actually cares about people, even if he buries it under layers of sarcasm when he's around people he doesn't know or doesn't feel he can entirely trust. Nick is just a piece of shit (at least according to McNeill) who only cares about himself and is a bit of a narcissist. I mean, he's definitely not wrong. When you look at Tom's character arc over the run of Voyager, it's hard to argue.

The puppet guy is a really deep dive into one of the first Star Trek OG episodes, "The Corbomite Maneuver". Balok, the commander of the First Federation starship Fesarius, used the puppet to appear as a fearsome, giant alien to intimidate the USS Enterprise. All you saw was the puppet's upper torso spouting doom & destruction for an advanced, child like, friendly alien who was just testing the Enterprise crew.

Mike Connaghan

Another classic BSG dramatic cliffhanger!

Makhiel

You'll be forgiven for not recognizing a cartoon Klingon but Ma'ah is the same guy from the episode "Three ships" (wej Duj) that also introduced T'Lyn.

Paul T Hewes

All of the main characters from the "Lower Decks" episode of Lower Decks were on the planet at the same time. The Klingon, Ma'ah was the one who took over the klingon ship (and made friends with the old captains taarg)...

Lizbeth Marcs

Ma'ah is one of my favorite recurring tertiary characters (we'll see him again in S5). And Mariner, being Mariner, is never going to let him forget that he did her a real solid...poor Ma'ah. And how great was Tawny Newsome in this episode? She totally knocked it out of the park.

Lizbeth Marcs

Fan theory is that a lot of the Star Fleet Academy students were pulled from their education so they could get fed to the meat grinder that was the Dominion War. I think it's a pretty solid theory, given that this is exactly what happened with Nog in Deep Space 9 cannon. It also means that Mariner is likely a few years older than the rest of the Lower Decks posse since she was at least old enough to be in her first year at the academy during S5 of Next Generation, which aired a year before the start of Deep Space 9. If you're doing time-line matching between Next Generation and Deep Space 9, Mariner was either about to graduate or had just graduated from the Academy at the start of the Dominion War. So at a guess, Mariner's probably anywhere from 6 to 10 years older than her friends. /nerd

I'd appreciate it if you avoid posting spoilers in the future, and edit this comment. Reactions work best when people know as little as possible about future episodes.

Robert Carson

Heard it put good. Nick is a bad guy hiding as a good guy. Tom is a good guy hiding as a bad guy.

Robert Carson

Again it show why Boimler and Mariner get along, he too worried about sending people to their deaths. They have a lot of the same dreams and fears.

https://youtu.be/gqlZ15AQJfE?si=UiHazy4Yr9TYmIE2 As for Locarno, this pretty much explains what happened. Yes, he was supposed to be on Voyager but bc of reasons they changed it which led to a strange situation where Neil had to audition for a 'Locarno type' part 🤷

Ben Chan

Rewatching this just cuz. Confirmed that even the mention of Sito brings tears to my eyes. Stroke of brilliance to have Mariner and Sito be friends at the Academy.

Mr Moxie

It's cool that through Sito they tie the show so directly in this episode to the TNG episode "Lower Decks".
