I remember there was a fair amount of controversy about this ending. I wasn't part of the conversation at the time but I remember hearing that a lot of people were disappointed by it. Looking back on it now 16 years later I think it's one of the most beautiful endings to any of the shows I've seen. When I first watched this I wasn't so sure how I felt about the human survivors' desire to destroy all their technology and start anew. I do now. I get so emotional about this ending. It's so incredibly well done and Bear McCreary's score is unparalleled. Honestly the final three episodes of BSG are one of the best endings any TV show has had imo.

cipher

"This is now a lower decks breakdown channel." This is not a incorrect decision

Mike Connaghan

This is just a heads up that I'm not going to come up with the perfect comment for the series finale. I know you were counting on it. Surely I will do better than this.

Freja Corbinne

There are still some issues with this episode though like... why the backstory with Roslin and her hookup? Not sure anyone has figured out what the pigeon means either.

Firefly24601

For me, I wasn't used to supernatural elements being the actual reason a lot of the things happened. So I was a bit disappointed in the non-explanation of all the supernatural elements. This made me feel like there were a lot of things that went unexplained or unresolved.

Brina Blue

I'm just glad after all the times that you were very uncomfortable with this series that it left you satisfied. I wasn't one that hated the ending when it first aired, I just found the robots a bit odd. I saw what RDM was getting at, I just felt that it fell a little flat. It's still one of my favorite shows. I also love his latest, For All Mankind over on Apple TV. I swear, that network seams to do no wrong!

Sythurizm

"Endings are hard" is probably the biggest idea I've taken away from watching all these shows with you two. I think this one was good. My favorite criticism of this ending i read recently was from George R. R. Martin when the finale came out(really didn't like that "god did it" even though god has a big theme the whole series). I wonder(kindly) how much he's found that endings are hard and if he's a bit kinder about other people's endings these days. Also, Mitochondrial Eve is fascinating subject to read even a bit about. I feel like there was a big spike in scientific articles about it for a few months in the early 2000's.

Derek Orr

Lots of defence contractor jobs require polygraph tests as part of govt security clearance....the questions he was being asked where just standard control questions. He said screw it and stayed in the fleet and they gave him command of the Galactica

Derek Orr

why not the backstory for Roslin???? the backstories were just all setting up their next steps in life to lead to where they where when the apocalypse happened

Derek Orr

Its a perfect ending

Derek Orr

you wanted them to explain God to you and the mysteries of being a supernatural being ?

Stephen Wray

Just Ron D Moore reading the magazine at the end

Chris Hanson

Is it a supernatural being though? Remember, it doesn’t like that name…

Firefly24601

I was used to a Star Trek type "super advanced aliens" or some other natural phenomena being the actual reason for supposed supernatural events in a sci-fi show. And when the answer was "God" it felt like a cop out.

Jonathan

It's also a pretty good commentary on the human vs. machine thing. As he points out, he's been entrusted already with thousands of lives. Why is his word not good enough, and they need a machine to tell them he's trustworthy?

Derek Orr

The child in the magazine is absolutely Hera. And mitochondrial eve is a real thing .....so we are all Cylons....and Humans :)

Derek Orr

The intentionally did not show any continents when they found the first earth. The shot at the end of crossroads was the actual earth 2

Derek Orr

So basically, on the last cycle...when they left Kobol and settled on the colonies...they did NOT give up their technology....so they only took like 3,000 years to get back to where the show started. But now with ditching it all and taking over 150,000 years...maybe we do things a bit better this time. The really interesting thing to think about is that any sufficiently advanced beings are going to appear magical and supernatural to less advanced peoples. SO....perhaps the one that doesn't like to be called god....the ones who were behind orchestrating the events of this show, were simply extremely advanced human/cyclons from one of the very first repetitions of these cycles of growth, AI, death, rebirth. Remember how they said back on Kobol they lived in harmony with the gods, the lords of Kobol...they could have more recent survivors of one of these great cycles. NOW imagine there have been fracking millions of these great cycles....some lasting a few thousand years and some taking over 150,000 years or more.....so if there where survivors from one of the very first cycles....your now talking about a version of us thats been around for almost as long as the galaxy has been around or whatever.....so quite easy to see the one who doesn't like being called god...the one who uses "head angels" as being just an incredibly advanced version of our best selves that we can't really comprehend yet ....rather than some traditional notion of a supernatural fictional deity like in the abrahamic or other regions we have made up over time in different cultures.

Jonathan

Love the ending. Personally it hits better now than it did at the time, what with AI being kinda scary at the moment. Big props to the acting too, especially Roslin. TV almost never portrays dying people with any realism, but this is definitely the exception. My favourite 'fun fact' about the ending is that jump co-ordinates in the show are meant to be relative. So the song is only the way to Earth when your starting point is the Cylon colony.

Mike Connaghan

I'm a little surprised how emotional the ending makes me still.

Chris Hanson

As was the sudden braincase expansion around the same time as Mitochondrial Eve that created what are referred to as “anatomically modern” homo sapiens.

Freja Corbinne

So in other words, they couldn't have gotten to Earth with the coordinates they got from Hera if she hadn't been taken and they hadn't chosen to rescue her in response. I love that

Freja Corbinne

I just don't think there was any reason it had to be some random hookup with a former student. Where does that play into her character?

Derek Orr

and who said its not the Star Trek super advanced people ???

Derek Orr

I mean is it fundamentally any different than a random job offer and night at a strip club for Adama? or for Zack having a date and introducing his brother to his girlfriend? Or Baltar dealing with his grandfather and his new love interest......they are all perfectly normal typical life events, and they just serve to be circumstances and set up decisions that puts everyone in the right place for the apocalypse. Laura goes through tragedy....tries to get back into the dating scene, has a fun one night stand...contemplates life and decides to focus on something else right now, helping the mayor become president...setting her up for her future role in all this.

Kieran B

I’m going to have to sit an binge watch them all now I know you’ll both love The Expanse…

Troy Convers

RDM absolutely butchered the concept though. We have more than one ancestor.

Troy Convers

Well, that's that done, again. Only the third time I've watched the whole series through (first run, DVD, this one) and yes, it's a satisfying ending that makes sense and is true to the original mandate. How on Earth people think it's the greatest series ever is beyond me though; my feelings about the writing haven't changed, but they did nail that finale. Well other than butchering the Mitochondrial Eve concept. As ever though, the actors nail their final scenes and bring a lot of heart to the ending; and even Gaius is redeemed.

Nolan

Daybreaks and the night is over. I love this finale. Sure, I'd take a quick shoe horn of, say the people Gaihs represented in the fleet secreting a couple ships away and forming Atlantis, but overall, I was satisfied. At the time this aired, the theory-crafting was off the wall and I think it bit too many people in the butt. And of course now we have the proliferation of unsatisfying mystery box shows that take most of their endings to wrap up the mysteries and leave the emotional pay-off as an after-thought. That's a very "content" minded approach. Watch the show, get the mystery solved, move on. Whereas this show has basically lived rent-free in my head everyday since it ended. I personally view it as art, and am constantly peeling through the layers and making connections all the time. And for as bleak a show as it is, it is ultimately one about hope. Even in the darkness and depression.

Firefly24601

Not really sure what your issue is, honestly. I simply gave my opinion on what I didn't like about it the first time I saw it. It seems to me like the ending was more of a spiritual unknowable God type of ending. And at the time, it felt like a cop out not to have an ending grounded in science.

Derek Orr

I mean you have watched the entire series start to finish, 3 times....sounds like a pretty strong contender to me

Derek Orr

its not an actual documentary though.....they also "butchered" the laws of physics with the existence of FTL jump drives and the transmission of a consciousness across vast distances in space to be received by a ship and implanted into a new body in a bath tub.......so ya I think he did just fine with the story and Hera :)

Derek Orr

ahh right of course.....I never thought of that before but it makes perfect sense as symbolism for sure

tal goren

The shot of Earth that made you joke about the continents was from the end of season 3, when Starbuck told Lee she found Earth. it was before they found Cylon-Earth, which we never actually got a clear view off

Freja Corbinne

I think it's not really important enough to have an extended discussion about. Have a nice day.

Tippis

This is *not* an “ugh, why did you pick this version” post. This is an “ugh, why did they choose to include three different versions on the release I have and none of them are the three separate broadcast episodes?!” post. Damn that was annoying to sync up. 🤣 Divisive ending to a great show but it has been a superb journey to be along with you. On to the next thing. ❤️

Tippis

Oh and also, since you are now clearly space nerds with a decently-developed tolerance for 90s cheese, you should definitely do Babylon 5. 😀

Freja Corbinne

Have they announced they're going to watch that? I super hope they do they will LOVE it

Freja Corbinne

I don't know anyone who considers it the greatest ever, but it's pretty good. I think most people who've seen the show express frustration at a lot of the repetitive relationship elements and character growth that seems to stall frequently. It's realistic in that way for sure, but not the most fun thing to watch.

Kieran B

No sadly not as far as I’m aware, but I’m really hoping they do

Brina Blue

I'm just glad after all the times that you were very uncomfortable with this series that it left you satisfied. Locoturbo

Hesitated to watch this, cause it would mean the BSG reactions were over. :( Thanks for sharing your reactions to the series and helping us all experience it like new! I'd say the ending did what it needed to do, but the execution could have been better. And I'll never be ok with the Starbuck thing.

Chris Hanson

Well, whether they butchered physics is not so much true or false as currently-unknowable; it's almost as incorrect to say "it's impossible" as it is to say "it's possible." Star Trek seems a little more on the nose, since there's been a lot of theoretical work done on warp travel since Alcubierre's 1994 letter in "Classical and Quantum Gravity" that has been paying off in reducing the (originally astronomical) energy requirements…

Taveren

The Pigeon is symbolism about Kara. I actually thought it was so clearly obvious even on first viewing I am surprised to her someone say others didn't get that.

Locoturbo

But how could the 12 visible constellations have been a match from nuked-OG-Earth. And now add in 150,000 years of stellar drift. Yeahhhh lots about it will never make sense.

Ashtara Levin

They explained that was the roadmap that the 13th colony took when they went from Kobol to earth, it was a few thousand years, not over a hundred.

Ashtara Levin

I absolutely love this finale!. I didn't at first, I was too much of a hopeless romantic that the only thing I could take away from it was "what?? after all this Lee and Starbuck don't get to be together??" and I felt that the flashdforward ending was a bit preachy and technophobic (oh, how much a decade can change your view.. ) - However ever since I have rewatched the show a couple of times and going back to that first scene between Lee and Kara when she is in the brig, knowing what the writers built upon from the actors' interaction (both Katee and Jaime said in an interview that they had no idea, when they started, what the history was between them, but it was just evident that there's baggage there, so they went with it, trusting the writers would figure it out) I couldn't help but appreciate the complexity and growth of their relationship, to have it end like that. And as for the "fair warning" thing at the end.. I now find myslef wishing someone would re-edit that newsclip ending to include more recent clips from the recent very scary develpoments in AI.. 😅

Ashtara Levin

Regarding the controversy in the acceptance of the ending - I personally never knew about it (having watched the show on DVD out of syndication after being super impressed with Tricia Halfer on Lucifer) - so, after reading some of the comments from people explaining the situation I want to chime in - One of the things I loved most about the show was its inclusion of religion. So much of science fiction stories (and believe me, I love me those) tend to completely disregard faith and spirituality - either from a desire to not offend anyone (TNG) or from the condescending view that science and faith are diametrically opposed (The Orville). I am not religious, but I have my faith, and I am also a science teacher, and until my students asked me about it, it never crossed my mind that these beliefes should cancel one another. for me God is the "why" whereas science is the "how" and everything I learn in each of these fields only strengthens my beliefe in the other.. I just loved that for once people of faith weren't depicted as meek sheep, stupid or naive for having faith.

Merkavar

Still a movie and that prequel series if they do them. Right?

Ben Wilson

Yeah, that Gaius Baltar scene at the end when he breaks down thinking about all his farming knowledge that he got from his dad, it hits so hard and makes you feel for Gaius in a way you never expected.

Jonathan

I totally get it. Galactica in a way was more "hard sci-fi" than anything else on TV at the time (at least in terms of semi-realistic physics, no laser guns etc.) so a lot of people were expecting more grounded resolutions to plotlines than 'she was an angel all along'. If you're not prepared for it chalking unlikely happenings up to a mysterious God's plan can feel like lazy writing. For me the ending holds up a lot better on second watch, because I'm more tuned in to how the show DOES have spiritual and religious themes running throughout, and I can appreciate the ending more without feeling a bit blindsided.

Kieran B

It feels like the perfect show for this spot too!

Jonathan

We all know the real cycle they had to break was: "I AM SO DONE WITH THESE CHARACTERS THEY'RE ALL JERKS" *2 episodes later both in tears*

ahector

It's been an amazing watch along - can't believe it's finished. Wowzers!

John

Mitochondrial Eve was discovered not long before the end of the show. Yes, that was Hera. Yes, we are all descendants of the first Cylon/Human hybrid.

Karl Ward

❤️ Interestingly enough, new recent research suggests that the current human population is comprised of 2 ancient populations that merged about 300,000 years ago with one group contributing 80% of the genetic makeup of modern humans and the other contributing 20%. Makes you think! Thank you, I've so enjoyed rewatching this with you both, it has given me a whole new perspective on the show which I watched all those years ago. Katee Sackoff has a great podcast which you may enjoy, in which she chats to a lot of her former co-actors. One of the most recent one was with Tahmoh Penikett who played Helo. I must say they've all aged disgustingly well!! https://youtu.be/vmZ5IVZQwvI?si=KFSDZ86K-243Kphw Her with Jamie Bamber (Apollo)

Derek Orr

Religion had been part of the show since day 1

Derek Orr

Huh I’m fascinated that so many people have expressed how they have changed their mind on the flash forward part of the finale and the warning of developing our own tech etc. Those worries have always kinda been a thing in sci fi and general culture for most of my life. Star Trek, Terminator, 2001 Space Odyssey and countless other works are all centred around the very real concerns of advanced AI type of technologies and they have all felt quite legit in terms of where we are going….not necessarily next year …but always essentially plausible relevant warnings. Just surprising that something has changed in the past 10 years for some people🤷‍♂️

Derek Orr

Technically there are 2 prequels if you include Blood & Chrome too🤷‍♂️

Ashtara Levin

I can tell you that for me the factor is my age.. I'm in my thirties, when I watched this a decade ago, I felt a little like I was being preached, I kept having to defend or explain new technology to my seniors, but as time past by and I saw what growing up with such technology is doing to the kids I taught in school, that I came to change my mind about that warnig. but perhaps more phylosophically - it is that such warning can only reach the ears of those who are willing to listen. You can (and should) always speak out, but people can be closed minded and set in their thinking for it to sink

Ashtara Levin

I have been dying to let them know about this - finally that the show is over, we can say "Go watch "the Sackhoff show" with Ron D Moore" XD

Slothlyke

I believe the ending made this series just a timeless masterpiece for me. Closing all ends, stories colliding together and having this resulting in our world today with the hope of a better future and breaking the cycle of violence. Now we finally know the real history of mankind :-) With the "angels", I guess their Methods were to bring Gaius and Six to this path, both of which were deeply flawed and probably wouldn't have done anything with the nice approach. Leoben were never an angel, but seemed to have tapped into some divine, forcing his interpretation upon others, especially Starbucks. Meanwhile the final 5 had a plan, but John had a different one... All in all, it's a complex show about so many topics. And having music as the key to their happy ending is a really nice addition to that giving credit to creativity instead of just a violent victory.
